Quickies

It's great to see Jim Zorn land on his feet so quickly in Baltimore. This might be the perfect situation for him, as he would be able to keep his family in Great Falls if that's what he preferred and commute or rent a condo in Baltimore.
He'll be working with the quarterbacks, which is his expertise and hopefully have a longer run with the Ravens than he had with the Redskins. It's a shame the way things played out in DC. He didn't come to Washington to be the head coach. He came to be the offensive coordinator. If it wasn't for Vinny Cerrato and Dan Snyder's incompetence, he could have developed as an offensive coordinator and then in a few years possibly gotten an opportunity to be the head guy when he was ready. Unfortunately, because of the circumstances and the way things worked out in DC, he may never get that chance again.
I appreciate Gilbert Arenas' op ed piece in the Washington Post today. Unlike many in this town, I do believe that Gilbert is truly remorseful for his actions at this point. Now, I don't think he was that sorry initially. It took staring at jail time and losing a $100 million dollar contract for him to see the light. But that's okay by me. We are all human and we all make mistakes. Most of us make them all the time.
The key for Gilbert is to continue to show he is truly remorseful and to make himself available to the public via charity work, public service announcements and things of that nature. If he goes on a redemption tour trying to restore his name by doing good deeds and promoting a positive message, I'm all about letting the man get on with his life and his career. Wherever that may be.
Phil Mickelson isn't cheating by using the Ping wedges with square grooves that have been outlawed on tour. The model that Phil is using has been grandfathered in because of a lawsuit between Ping and the USGA and is available to all golfers on tour. If some want to take a moral higher ground and not use them - good for them. But they have been exempted from the ban and all players are able to put them in their bag if they see fit. End of story.
Maryland got off to a fast start in conference play this season by going 4-1 before losing to Clemson on Sunday. Gary Williams does more with less than any coach in the country in my opinion. It's no coincidence that he's averaged 20.8 wins a season over his eventual Hall of Fame career.
However, nothing is a given in this league and a fast start does not mean you can blow winnable road games in conference. Clemson shot 31% from the field and turned the ball over 21 times. Unfortunately Maryland only shot 34% from the field and turned it over 26 times. Maryland's RPI is only 50 at this point in the season and they haven't even played the tough part of their league schedule yet. I'm worried that the blown opportunity at Clemson could come back to haunt them come tournament time.
Herschel Walker is one of the greatest athletes of our generation. Forget about how amazing he looks at 47 and the fact that he can get in the ring with a professional mixed martial artist and win. People always talked about Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson, and those guys are unbelievable in their own right. But don't sleep on Walker.
He won the Heisman Trophy in 1982 at Georgia. Before entering the NFL he rushed for 5,500 yards in the USFL. Ultimately he retired from the NFL with over 18,000 total combined yards which was #2 at the time of his retirement. He once ran the 100 meters in 10.22 and the 100 yards in 9.3 seconds. He was a member of US Olympic team in 1992 as a two man bobsledder. Before that in 1988 he danced with the Fort Worth ballet. This man's athletic accomplishments have been greatly underrated.
Finally, we are heading to Miami to cover the Super Bowl festivities Wednesday through Friday. Hopefully the weather holds up and we can find a way to sneak into a few cool parties.
Thank God the game is in Miami and not Tampa. The last time the game was held in Tampa the fans and media overran the city. Cabs were impossible to find and getting around was a nightmare. I left early because I couldn't stand waiting and searching for hours to find any transportation. It didn't get any better when I got home. MD had a huge game against Duke that Saturday and the Blue Devils overcame a 10-point deficit in just over a minute. Let's hope when MD plays North Carolina this weekend on Super Bowl Sunday, the Terps close out the game properly.

What????? You guys are going to the Super Bowl???? I didn't realize because I haven't heard you talk about it in every single segment for the last two weeks.
Maybe you can have ColorWorks re-dye the Horny for Zorny shirts in black and purple and ship them up the road to B-more.
Worst. Post. Ever.
I watched that Duke/MD game on ESPN classic a few weeks ago. I hope Gary shows the team the last 2 minutes of regulation every year just so they know a game is never over until the buzzer sounds.
Re: Clemson game - early foul trouble for Greivis and nothing from Milbourne, Bowie and Tucker (combined 2-17) were too much to overcome.
