Analyzing Strasburg
Monday: Nats healthy, confident in 2010 | Tuesday: Could Nats be interested in Benson? | Wednesday: Nats agree with Mench, possibly interested in Wang | Thursday: Nats monitoring Wang | Friday: All about Kennedy | Saturday: More on Kennedy and another signing
Sunday, February 7:
Byron Kerr looks at Ian Desmond: "A lot of talk last week centered around the possiblity of signing a second baseman and if that did not come to fruition, one scenario had the Nats starting the season with Cristian Guzman and Ian Desmond as the double play combination.
Now with Kennedy signed, where does that leave Desmond? I spoke with Ian and he told me he is not discouraged by the signing: "I knew they weren't going to give me the position. I knew I would have to earn it."" [masnsports.com]
Stan McNeal writes on Stephen Strasburg: "Credentials: He is widely considered one of the greatest pitching prospects ever with a triple-digit fastball and four major league-ready pitches. Strasburg, the first pick of the 2009 draft, struck out 328 batters in the past two seasons at San Diego State.
Opportunity: The Nationals spent $15.1 million to sign Strasburg and understandably will be eager to put him on the mound at Nationals Park. Their rotation is thin, and the club needs a publicity lift after consecutive seasons of 100-plus losses and declining attendance.
Early expectation: Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla., will be buzzing this spring when Strasburg takes the mound. But no matter how well he pitches, don't expect him to break camp with the major league team. After all, he never has faced big-league hitters and has worked only 19 innings as a pro (and those were in the Arizona Fall League)." [Sporting News]
