O's sign Startup, could be a sleeper

Tuesday, February 9:
Roch Kubatko says Mark Hendrickson signing is now official: "It's official: The Orioles have re-signed Mark Hendrickson and designated reliever Armando Gabino for assignment.

Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail just confirmed that the club has signed pitcher Will Ohman to a minor league deal.

Ohman receives an invitation to spring training, with the chance to win a spot in the bullpen as a situational lefty.

That should put a little more heat on Alberto Castillo, who appeared in 48 games with the Orioles over the past two seasons." [masnsports.com]

Steve Melewski writes on Matt Wieters: "How do the O's balance wanting Wieters back there at catcher, where he is a solid defender and has a big arm, with giving him time off or as a DH to keep him fresh and effective for the entire year?

The fact Wieters was getting better in September last season is probably a good sign that the 24-year-old can carry a heavy load.

Even knowing that, I'd wonder if the O's still want to be cautious with such a young talent and use Mauer's 2009 games played as a model.

Wieters might turn out to be a great hitter, he sure looks to be on his way, but what makes him really special is he is playing the premium position of catcher.

The O's will have someone catching that can hold his own with most in the league on defense, while exceeding most of them (some by a large margin) on offense." [masnsports.com]

Jeff Zrebiec reports the O's have signed Will Ohman: "The Orioles have signed veteran left-handed reliever Will Ohman to a minor league deal with an invitation to big league spring training.

Ohman, 32, went 1-0 with a 5.84 ERA in 21 relief appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. For his career which spans 324 big-league appearances, Ohman has held lefties to a .204 batting average." [Baltimore Sun]

Jon Paul Morosi tweets the O's have signed a pitcher: "Orioles sign LHP Will Startup to minor league deal, sources say. Barely pitched last year but had some past success in Braves org. MLB" [@jonmorosi]

Mike Silver says the O's are a sleeper: "With the wealth of talent at the top of the minors, Baltimore certainly has its ticket stamped for sometime in the 2011 or 2012 seasons. With the bulk of their prospects expected to reach the major leagues within that timeframe, this team is primed to make a meteoric rise to the top - much like Tampa Bay did in '08.

Exciting though it will be for many baseball fans to see a competitive Orioles team for the first time in over a decade, Boston needs to keep a watchful eye on their pesky division-mates. Though it is unlikely that they will be a playoff contender in 2010, they will spoil someone's party in September and have a realistic shot at .500. Just don't miss these guys when they reappear on radars come 2011 and beyond." [Fire Brand of the American League]
