Where in the Yard? (Updated w/Answer)
| | Comments (28)

It's February 1st already, which means the Orioles officially report to spring training this month.

That said, O's fans probably don't need extra help getting excited for Orioles baseball, but a mental walk around the Yard never hurts - so we're back for another 'Where in the Yard?' photo challenge in the Orioles Buzz.

And no, this week's image isn't a gimme - the giveaways don't start until Opening Day, and even then, you'll have to head to the ballpark gates if you're looking for a freebie.

Yes, we're at Edward Bennett Williams Plaza this week for 'Where in the Yard?' - So I gave you the what; but what I want to know is where. Where is Edward Bennett Williams Plaza? What's just below these letters? What's laid out in front of it?

Where-in-the-Yard_2-1-10.jpg

Bonus: There's plenty of potential for bonus points this week, but here's your official chance: Tell me who Edward Bennett Williams is for a guaranteed extra point.

Good Luck!

Update: Sbauer318, Dom, Allan, Tim Morris, Chris in Baltimore, and Roscoe hit all three of the markers, plus the bonus. Add Bedman, Heathir, Bob St., Jeff in York, Ryan S and HowBoutThemO's to this group as well.

Brant (O's Fan), Pete O's Fan in NJ, John W., Lauren, Glassman, and Nancy Lauer all gave one or two of the details identifying this week's photo, as well as the bonus. Nancy Lauer, Amy, and Bryan also have one or two of the details, plus the bonus.

Jeremy from Cumberland has two, but in order to get the bonus, you'll have to specify EBW's connection to the O's...(which he has since done. So Jeremy, you've been added to the first group - Nice job!)

Chris Stallings also got the bonus.

Answer: Below this sign for Edward Bennett Williams Plaza are the ticket windows at the north end of the Warehouse at Camden Yards. In the plaza in front of the ticket windows are the retired number and Babe Ruth statues.

And for the bonus (which most of you knew) Edward Bennett Williams was the owner of the Orioles from 1980-1988. On top of that, thank EBW for OPACY, without which we wouldn't be playing 'Where in the Yard?'

Congrats to those who scored a fistful of points this week, and nice job everyone!

He used to be an owner of the O's
the name is above the ticket office.
the plaza is also the north entrance on Eutaw St.
The O's retired number statues are there too

Brandt (O's Fan) said:

This is where the ticket windows are at the train station end of the warehouse. Edward Bennet Williams was the owner of the Orioles when Camden Yards was in its planning stages.

Allan said:

Below this sign is the ticket office at the end of warehouse facing Sports Legends Museum. In front of the ticket box are all the retired numbers by the Orioles (4, 5, 8, 20, 22, 33). Edward Bennett Williams was the owner of the birds from '80-'88. This was the man that ultimately kept the team in Baltimore!!!

Pete O's fan in NJ said:

I think Cal Ripken's #8 is in front of this and Edward Bennett is the ex owner of the Orioles in the 80's

John W. said:

Edward Bennett Williams was the owner of the O's from 80-88. My best guess is this is oufside of Eutaw St. by the memorial.

Lauren said:

Edward Bennett Williams was a former owner of the Orioles (back in the 80s). This plaza is located at the end of Eutaw Street, near the box office - in front of it are the retired numbers of the O's (Cal, Brooks, Eddie, etc.)

Tim Morris said:

It's at the end of Eutaw Street near the north entrance to the ballpark. Below are the main ticket booths. In front are the "small statue like" Orioles retired numbers. EBW was a great former owner of the Orioles.

Glassman said:

It's the area where the retired Orioles number statues are located at the end of Eutaw Street. Williams was the former owner back in the mid-80's who quietly threatened to move the team to D.C. if he didn't get a new stadium. Hence why we have OPACY!

Chris in Baltimore said:

EBW was the owner of the Os in the late 80s, early 90s who was a DC attorney and threatened to move the team to DC which caused the panic that led to OPACY (thankfully). When he died, the Os had a black EBW on their sleeves for the season if I remember right.

The plaza is at the end of the warehouse by the new hotel. The ticket booths are under the sign and the retired number monuments (4,5,8,20,22, and 33) are in front of it.

Roscoe said:

Edward Bennett Williams was the O's previous owner before Peter Angelos, and a highly-respected Washington, DC lawyer and "insider". The E.B.W. plaza is at Howard and Camden streets abutting the rail/parking area, the sign sits right above the ticket booth, facing the Sports Legends Museum, and the plaza itself "houses" the Babe Ruth statue, Cal's "8", and Gate E.

Great series, I didn't realize how much more there was to see at the Yards!

Nancy Lauer said:

the plaza is on the north end of Eutaw Street. Williams is a former Orioles owner, when they were winning!

bedman said:

OK here we go....that is where the north entrance to Eutaw Street is located. Just below the letters are the ticket windows and out in front of that are the number monuments for all of the O's hall of famers, Babe Ruth statue, Sports Legends, etc. Edward Bennett Williams wwas the O's owner and I think he had something to do with the first steps towards OPACY becoming a reality and thats why the plaza is named after him. Bring on the bonus points!

Jeremy from Cumberland said:

He is a trial attorney from dc and the plaza is at the north end of the warehouse.

Brandt (O's Fans) said:

I used to do this on tests... not read all parts of the questions... the ticket booths and retired numbers are in this plaza....

Heathir said:

1. It is the area outside of Gate H of Eutaw Street, around the Sports Museum gift shop and the Babe Ruth statue.

2. Ticket windows are right below the letters.

3. The retired numbers are laid out in front of the plaza.

Bonus: E.B. Williams owned the team for a while in the 80's. I'm pretty sure he owned it when they won the series in '83. I think he was the owner that fans feared would move the O's to DC for a while, too.

Amy said:

I think that this is on Eutaw Street but that's really all I know.

For the bonus, I know that Edward Bennett Williams owned the Orioles from 1980 to 1988 and under him, Camden Yards was created.

Bob St said:

This is located at the end of the warehouse, where the retired number statues are. Located below the letters is the ticket windows. He is the former owner of the Orioles.

Jeremy from Cumberland said:

The plaza where the retired numbers are by the sports legands museum. And he was a lawyer.

Jeff in York said:

The sign is just above the ticket booths near the retired numbers.
EBW is the former O's owner who signed the original lease for Camden Yards.

John W. said:

Time will not dim the glory of their deeds.

Jeremy from Cumberland said:

Ed was the owner of the Orioles.

Jeremy from Cumberland said:

I think this also the location of the ticket booth.

Chris Stallings said:

Edward Bennett Williams owned the team durring the 80's....yup, even during the 1983 WS win. He is responsible for the state funding/negotiating for Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

I know he was a lawyer in DC, people thought he would move the team after the colts left, but he didnt. I was actually at the game when the O's came back from that craptastic road trip where they lose like 10-11 games. They said the Orioles "would be in Baltimore forever." Well, Donald Schaffer said that. I looked at my dad and said, "why would they want to leave?"

The plaza I believe is south of the Eutaw St promenade, but just North of the Memorial Stadium tribute on the west side of the warehouse.

Chris.

Bryan said:

Edward Bennett Williams was a Dc area lawyer who owned the Orioles and the Redskins. He also brokered the deal the the State of Md would build OPACY.

The plaza is located on Eutaw St and is where the Orioles numbers and the Statue of Babe Ruth is located.

Jeff in York said:

I'm not sure what more you're looking for. I said ticket windows, retired numbers, and EBW as O's former owner.
Maybe the street? Leon Day Plaza?
North end of warehouse?

Ryan S said:

It is on Eutaw Street. Just below those letters are the ticket booths. Laid out in front are the retired numbers of the players: Palmer (22), Brooks Robinson (5), Weaver (4), Ripken (8), Frank Robinson (20), and Eddie Murray (33). The big giant number statue thingys.

Edward owned the orioles from 1980-1988. He signed a long term lease to pay for a new stadium which became Oriole Park. He died before it was built.

HowBoutThemO's said:

EBW is a former owner of the Orioles (like Angelos, he was also an attorney)...passed away in the late 80s...the plaza is outside the gates where the statues (and ticket windows) are--where Ripken's #8 was stolen a few years back...I believe that's just off W. Camden Ave

Andrew Rickli said:

Edward Bennett Williams was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on 31st May, 1920. He studied law at Georgetown University and eventually became a lawyer. In the early fifties, Williams represented several liberals, socialists and communists before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). This included Carl Foreman, Robert Rossen, Martin Berkeley, Howard Koch, and Harold Hecht. Later he represented Joseph McCarthy during the Senate censure proceedings against him.

Edward Bennett Williams was one of the most well known trial attorneys in the country and owner of the Baltimore Orioles and the NFL Washington Redskins. He purchased the Orioles in 1979 for $12 million.

The Plaza an entrance on the warehouse.
