A bit on Stammen and Strasburg
Monday: Hernandez getting close to starting | Wednesday: Flores injured, weighing in on Strasburg | Thursday: Nats trim the roster | Friday: More roster moves and examining the draft | Saturday: Guzman set to return | Sunday: Desmond will play shortstop
Tuesday, March 9:
Byron Kerr asked Craig Stammen what he wants to do in his second start: "When you get the first game going, the hardest thing is getting mentally prepared for it because you have been training your body the whole off season and getting your arm in shape.
"You haven't mentally trained your brain to get ready for game situations and facing big league hitters. That was part of what was happening in the first outing. I need to get that back in my head and figure it out. I will be a lot better the second time." [masnsports.com]
Tracy Ringolsby says the Nats should send Stephen Strasburg to the minor leagues: "Along with the No. 37, and Strasburg across the top of the back of his uniform, Washington phenom Stephen Strasburg should wear a label, cautioning, ``Handle with Care.''
He received the largest bonus ever for a draft player last August after the Nationals made him the No. 1 player selected in the draft last June, and he has been declared to be on the fast track to the big leagues.
Strasburg makes his spring debut, his first matchup with big-league hitters, in Tuesday's game against Detroit in Viera, Fla. It's a big enough deal that it is the only Tuesday game that MASN, which has the television rights for the Nationals, will carry this spring.
The Nationals are trying to balance hopes and expectations for the short term with what is best long term, both for Strasburg and the franchise.
And manager Jim Riggleman sounds as if he is committed to letting Strasburg idle in the minors, at least to open the season." [Fox Sports]
