More on Dukes, a thought on Guzman
| | Comments (0)

Thursday, March 18:
Adam Kilgore has more on the release of Elijah Dukes: "Elijah Dukes's tenure with the Washington Nationals ended Wednesday when the team unconditionally released him, a decision the team said was made for reasons pertaining only to baseball. The move left Dukes stunned and the Nationals without a set right fielder with the season less than three weeks away.

General Manager Mike Rizzo called Dukes's release "a performance-based decision" and that "no singular incident" led to the decision. But Rizzo also implied that Dukes's presence in the clubhouse adversely affected the Nationals, saying they "will be a more cohesive group" without him." [Washington Post]

Buster Olney writes on Elijah Dukes: "The Nationals cut Elijah Dukes. It will be interesting to see what the level of interest is from other teams.

Mark Simon sent along this note that he, Jeremy Lundblad and Ryan McCrystal of ESPN Stats & Information put together: Elijah Dukes had three steals and was caught stealing 10 times in 2009. That was the first time a player had three or fewer steals, and 10-plus caught stealing since Jose Vizcaino of the legendary 1994 Mets." [ESPN.com (Insider Only)]

Bill Ladson examines Cristian Guzman as a trade candidate: "The Nationals may be looking to trade shortstop Cristian Guzman, but don't look for the Mets to acquire his services, according to a baseball source. The Mets have issued no statement regarding Guzman.

A report out of New York indicated that the Mets may be looking at Guzman just in case shortstop Jose Reyes is not ready for Opening Day. But the source said the Mets have not talked to Washington and are not monitoring Guzman." [MLB.com]
