Saturday, March 20:
Ben Goessliing reports the Nats optioned Drew Storen and Stephen Strasburg: "Even with Drew Storen and Stephen Strasburg alternately making cases all spring they deserved to be on the Nationals' Opening Day roster, the Nationals held firm to their belief that both should start the year in the minor leagues. And on Saturday morning, a day after Strasburg rebounded from a pair of home runs to look as major-league ready as he has all spring, the Nationals made the decision they were expected to make all along.
They cut both players from major-league camp on Saturday, optioning Strasburg to Class AA Harrisburg and re-assigning Storen to minor league camp, though Storen has been told he will also start at Harrisburg." [masnsports.com]
Adam Kilgore says the Nats optioned Drew Storen and Stephen Strasburg: "The inevitable became official this morning when the Nationals optioned phenom Stephen Strasburg to Class AA Harrisburg, meaning baseball's best pitching prospect will not join the Nationals until late spring or midsummer. Joining him in Harrisburg will be closer Drew Storen, a fellow 2009 first-round draft pick whom the Nationals reassigned to minor league camp." [Washington Post]
Mike Axisa writes on the impact of Stephen Strasburg being optioned: "The Nationals have optioned 2009 first overall pick Stephen Strasburg to Double-A Harrisburg according to a team press release. He performed as expected in Spring Training, striking out 12 and allowing just two runs in nine innings pitched.
Strasburg would have to remain in the minors for approximately two weeks to have his free agency pushed back one year, and about two months to push his arbitration years back. His salaries are already set for the next three years by the Major League contract he signed out of the draft, so in 2013 the Nats would not be able to offer him less than 80% of the $3MM he will earn in 2012, even if he is still in his pre-arbitration years." Ken Rosenthal examines Adam Dunn at first base: "The Nats have initiated talks about an extension for Dunn, 30, who will earn $12 million this season in the final year of his contract. First base would be his long-term position with the club. He has spent most of his career playing left field.
Manager Jim Riggleman says Dunn has made significant progress working with Foli and third base coach Pat Listach, another former major-league infielder. Dunn presents a big target and throws well, Riggleman says. His biggest challenge is his footwork." [Fox Sports]
Mike Henderson weighs in on Drew Storen and Stephen Strasburg: "This Hutch estimates an early-June MLB debut for Strasburg and Storen against Cincinnati, who will be bringing much-anticipated Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman to town the weekend of June 4-6." [Nationals Pride]
