Nats ride five solo homers, stout relief to wild win over Tribe
Five solo homers. A blown 5-0 lead. Late-inning heroics. Impressive relief. If you were looking for some excitement Saturday night, Progressive Field in Cleveland might've been the place to be. The Nationals were able to overcome a rare poor start from Jordan Zimmermann and a big Indians comeback to win 7-6 for their third victory in four games. The Nats looked like they'd cruise to a win after jumping out to a 5-0 lead and chasing starter Scott Kazmir in the third behind homers from Ryan...

Zimmermann, Nats let Indians take first lead (Nats win 7-6)

Zimmermann, Nats let Indians take first lead (Nats win 7-6)
This one's starting to look a lot like Jordan Zimmermann's rough May 29 start in Baltimore. Given a 5-0 lead in the third, Zimmermann has let the Indians come all the way back to take a 6-5 advantage in the fifth. Cleveland scored once in the third, twice in the second and three times with two outs in the fifth. Nick Swisher slimmed the Nationals' lead to one with an RBI single before Michael Brantley's two-run double to center put the Indians on top. Zimmermann's line so far: 5 IP, 8...

Zimmerman, Werth get Nats out to fast start (Indians go back-to-back)
To set Jordan Zimmermann up with an early cushion, the middle of the Nationals' order dialed up the longball with two outs in the first. Ryan Zimmerman took Scott Kazmir deep before Jayson Werth made it back-to-back homers for a 2-0 Nationals lead. It was Zimmerman's eighth of the season and second in three games after an 11-game drought. Werth hit his sixth of the year. The Nats have hit back-to-back homers four times this year and now hit at least one longball in 79 consecutive series...

Zimmermann facing Indians for first time, Marrero earns first start since '11 (update)
Jordan Zimmermann faces the Indians for the first time in his career, looking to help the Nationals even their weekend interleague series. Zimmermann has been exceptional since his first dud of the season, a May 29 loss at Baltimore where the right-hander allowed seven runs in six innings. Over the two starts heading into tonight, he has held opponents to just two unearned runs on six hits while fanning 12 and walking three in 15 frames. He'll be going for his 10th win today. Former top...

Patrick Reddington: All eyes again on Strasburg in Cleveland
Stephen Strasburg's second major league start took place in Cleveland's Progressive Field on June 13, 2010. After a dazzling 14-strikeout major league debut at Nationals Park, the Nats and Strasburg took the show on the road. The game between a 31-33 Nationals team and a 25-37 Indians team was picked up on a national broadcast solely because Strasburg was going to be on the mound. In the first two games of that three-game weekend set, the Indians drew 22,041 Friday night and 19,484 Saturday...

Two walk-offs, two lift-offs (with pictures)
The date September 12, 2012 may not stand out in your mind, but for many Orioles fans, the highlights of that night's game are fresh in their minds. Tied 2-2, the Rays and Orioles headed to the ninth in front of a crowd of 26,076. After two outs from Jim Johnson, Evan Longoria stepped to the plate. After working the count full, he hit a weak grounder to the third base side. Manny Machado fielded the ball, but with not enough time to get the runner headed to first. So, what did he do?...

Anthony Amobi: Can Strop figure it out?
Wednesday afternoon was a case study in frustration if you are an Orioles fan. The Orioles faced the Los Angeles Angels and were hoping a series sweep. Despite their talent level, the Angels have been lackluster this season, but they took advantage a Baltimore pitcher during the top of the seventh inning. The pitcher on the mound for the Orioles: Pedro Strop. That name has caused fans to react with occasional outbursts of anger all season long. When Strop came into the game, the Orioles...

The calm after the storm

The calm after the storm
We all know spring in Maryland brings unpredictable weather, but today was exceptionally whimsical. In the late afternoon, many of us in the Baltimore area saw all of the flash flood and tornado warnings on our phones and televisions. Around that time, it seemed near impossible that the Orioles would be able to play their series opener against the Red Sox. By game time, it was near-perfect weather for a night at the yard, but Mother Nature wasn't done yet. Around the fourth inning, we...

Rachel Levitin: Time to focus on the 2013 Nationals' positives over negatives
With a win against the Colorado Rockies last night, the Nationals are back at .500 with a 32-32 record and are six games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East. There's been a lot of talk about expectations for the 2013 Nationals and how they're not living up to the alleged hype. Instead of getting bogged down in that, it may be best to realign expectations moving forward for the rest of the season. It's time to focus on what is working as opposed to what's not. Ian...

David Huzzard: Jordan Zimmermann's great start makes waiting on long-term deal a smart move

David Huzzard: Jordan Zimmermann's great start makes waiting on long-term deal a smart move
Before the start of the 2013 baseball season, the Washington Nationals and Jordan Zimmermann were at a crossroads. The Nationals would have liked to have extended him in the same manner they did Gio Gonzalez before his 21-win season. If Zimmermann had been paying attention to that and to the money that right-handed aces such as Zack Greinke, Matt Cain, Felix Hernandez, and Justin Verlander were commanding, then he was smart to turn aside the Nationals' advances to commit to a long-term...

Neal Shaffer: Is it easier to talk O's baseball now than when team was losing?
There's only one item on the agenda today and it's a pretty simple one. It takes the form of a question: Is it harder to talk about the Orioles now than it was when they were losing? It is, a little bit, for me. When they were losing, I loved digging in on what ifs and maybes because the rest of the world treated Birdland as an afterthought or a joke. I loved uncovering new angles. I loved placing long bets and playing the long game. I didn't love the baseball a lot of the time, but I...

Yard Talk: Fans compare Mike Trout and Manny Machado
Last season, Manny Machado, Mike Trout and Bryce Harper made a big splash during their rookie campaigns. This season, these boys have proven they're here to stay. Now the question is, which of these promising young players would you want on your team? Would you take Harper's hustle and athleticism, Trout's speed and power, or Machado's glove and consistency? With the Angels making an appearance at Camden Yards this week, we decided to ask fans to compare two of MLB's rising stars:...

Ted Leavengood: The third No. 1 truly arrives
Anthony Rendon leapt high into the air to snare a line drive during Sunday's game. It was not until the slow motion replay was available that the athletic nature of the play could be appreciated. Rendon was easily three feet or more off the ground when the ball settled into his outstretched mitt. His standing leap was one that most basketball players would covet. It was the kind of play that Danny Espinosa has been making routinely at second base for the past three seasons. When Rendon made...
