Wondering about the MVO votes

Wondering about the MVO votes
We still have 46 games remaining in the regular season and I'm jumping the gun with the debate over Most Valuable Oriole, but why not? And it's not really a debate over the winner, though rookie Trey Mancini is doing his best to heat it up. It can't be anyone else at this point except Jonathan Schoop. He'd have to really fall apart to avoid taking all of the first place votes. Schoop began last night batting .298/.347/.541 with 29 doubles, 25 home runs and 82 RBIs in 113 games, and his...

Orioles lineup vs. Athletics

Orioles lineup vs. Athletics
Chris Davis has returned to the Orioles lineup after sitting out last night, but he's been lowered to seventh in the order. Tim Beckham remains the leadoff hitter. Trey Mancini homered twice last night and is the first Orioles rookie with 20 since Cal Ripken Jr. in 1982. Ripken finished with 28. Ubaldo Jiménez is 4-1 with a 4.66 ERA in seven career starts against the Athletics and 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two starts in Oakland. He's allowed three runs in 11 2/3 innings, but he's also walked...

This, that and the other

This, that and the other
Orioles manager Buck Showalter didn't wait until the Orioles faced a left-hander to sit first baseman Chris Davis. It happened last night with the Athletics starting Chris Smith. Davis is batting .212/.311/.427 in 85 games, with nine doubles, 18 home runs, 41 RBIs and 128 strikeouts in 302 at-bats. He's 4-for-33 with one home run and 11 strikeouts this month. Davis actually is batting .228 against left-handers this season and .204 against right-handers. The A's are starting right-hander Paul...

Dickerson offers opinion on Schoop as shortstop
The Orioles lost two of three games in Anaheim, Seth Smith has a sore hamstring and Joey Rickard took a fastball off his batting helmet. The West Coast is no joke. This week's portion of the road trip now takes the Orioles to Oakland, where they lost three of four games last season - a 9-6 win in the finale allowing them to avert an embarrassing sweep. They lost the first three games 3-2, 2-1 and 1-0. The Orioles haven't swept the Athletics in a four-game series in Oakland since...

Orioles lineup vs. Angels
Mark Trumbo has come off the disabled list today and is in the Orioles lineup. Left-hander Donnie Hart was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles will try to get back to .500 today after last night's 3-2 loss in Anaheim. They remain 1 ½ games back for the second wild card. Kevin Gausman is making his team-leading 25th start of the season. He's 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in three career starts against the Angels and 0-1 with a 5.11 ERA in two starts in Anaheim over 12 1/3 innings. Mike Trout is...

Because You Asked - Chamber of Secrets

Because You Asked - Chamber of Secrets
The mailbag is loaded down with questions, though pretty much the same five or six. They just get repeated a lot and I can't stop it from happening. This is my little attempt. Answer them here and see if that satisfies the masses. Perhaps the responses won't get lost in the social media shuffle. I did lighten the load by removing all the ones that begin with "How do you keep your job?" and "How do you sleep at night?" Also, I remain undecided whether a hot dog is a sandwich, though I lean...

The Orioles will attempt tonight to move above .500 for the first time since June 11. Manny Machado hit a tie-breaking grand slam last night and has 12 RBIs in his last five games. He's 12-for-30 this month. Jeremy Hellickson will be following up on an Orioles debut that included seven scoreless innings against the Royals. Hellickson owns a 2.78 ERA in seven career games (six starts) against the Angels. He has a 1.037 WHIP in 35 2/3 innings. Mike Trout is 3-for-6 with a double and home run...

Gentry a steal for Orioles

Gentry a steal for Orioles
The Orioles finally are back at .500, they're 1 1/2 games behind for the second wild card and FanGraphs now puts their playoff chances at 11 percent. It's a long season, folks. Buckle up and enjoy the ride. Craig Gentry stole third base twice in the series opener against the Tigers last week at Camden Yards, which left people scrambling to find out the last time that an Orioles player did it in the same game. Or maybe I was the only one curious about it. Anyway, Corey Patterson was the last...

Beckham named AL Player of the Week

Beckham named AL Player of the Week
Tim Beckham's first six games with the Orioles earned him an award. The curtain call wasn't sufficient. Beckham has been named the American League's Player of the Week after collecting 14 hits in his first 24 at-bats following last Monday's trade that brought him over from the Rays. Beckham posted a .583/.600/1.167 slash line with three doubles, a triple, three home runs, six RBIs and six runs scored to earn his first Player of the Week honor. Among the league leaders, Beckham finished the...

Orioles know that West Coast trip is "going to be big"
The Orioles wrapped up their homestand yesterday with their second straight win over the Tigers to improve their Camden Yards record to 35-23. Only the Red Sox at 36 have more wins at home among American League teams. Now, about that road record ... The Orioles are 20-33 as they head to the West Coast for games in Anaheim, Oakland and Seattle. Their win total is the second-lowest in the league behind the Athletics. They've lost 10 of their last 14 series away from Baltimore. And the West Coast...

Orioles hit five home runs in 12-3 romp over Tigers (with quotes)
Not satisfied with reaching 10,000 home runs in club history, the Orioles seemed determined today to double the total. The Orioles hit five homers in the first four innings off Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez, who fought the urge to signal for his own reliever. Ubaldo Jiménez came within an out of his third consecutive quality start, the tight rope never snapping beneath his feet, and the Orioles salvaged a split of the four-game series with a 12-3 victory over the Tigers before an announced...

Showalter on Tillman, Beckham, Álvarez and more (O's up 8-1)
As Chris Tillman prepares for life as a reliever, however long it lasts, manager Buck Showalter expresses no concerns over how his former ace will handle it. "Chris is the ultimate what's best for the team guy," Showalter said. "Believe me, I know. He wears it. It bothers him. "He has strong will. Whatever it takes to go out there and have that outing (Thursday) and then go upstairs and get your ice or whatever treatment and come back and sit in the dugout for five innings. Try doing that...

Tillman: "I haven't been pitching well enough and I understand"
Going to the bullpen wasn't Chris Tillman's first choice, of course. He's been a career starter in the majors and for the vast majority of his minor league tenure, a relief role filled only six times. But he knew an 8.10 ERA wouldn't work on a team that's still trying to make the playoffs. "I need to get back to being me and it wasn't happening starting," he said this morning while standing at his locker. "I think this is going to be a good thing. I need to get back and I think it's...

Seth Smith is playing left field for the Orioles today in their series finale against the Tigers and his past success against Anibal Sanchez must factor into it. Smith is 10-for-26 (.385) with a double and four home runs lifetime against Sanchez. He was assured of starting. Caleb Joseph is catching, so his right hand is fine. Jonathan Schoop is 4-for-11 with a double and home run, and Adam Jones is 4-for-12 with a double. Sanchez is making his ninth start and 20th appearance of the season....

Could Beckham move up the order?

Could Beckham move up the order?
Tim Beckham's streak of getting a hit in consecutive at-bats ended last night at seven after he struck out in the second inning against Tigers starter Drew VerHagen. The fun came later. Ken Singleton holds the Orioles record with 10 in 1981. He went 4-for-4 on April 26 and 27 and singled and homered in his first two trips to the plate the following night. The White Sox's Richard Dotson induced a double play grounder in the fifth inning to prevent Singleton from making it to 11. Paid...

Wrapping up Beckham's home run and a 5-2 win
It had to be the new guy. Tim Beckham, playing in his fifth game tonight since the Orioles acquired him from the Rays, hit the 10,000th regular season home run in club history. The ball exploded off his bat in the bottom of the eighth inning, the kind of sound that makes heads snap in its direction, and another chapter was penned in an improbable story. Beckham provided an insurance run and some added thrills in a 5-2 win over the Tigers at Camden Yards. Fans received Jonathan Schoop's...

Beckham hits 10,000th home run in club history in 5-2 win
Wade Miley reached his magic number of innings again tonight, leaving the game after the fifth. He's done it 10 times in 23 starts. It's a wall of sorts that can have good or bad on the other side. Sometimes, there's the improbable. The pitch count got out of control again, climbing to 30 after the first inning and 113 after the fifth. But Miley retired the last seven batters he faced and settled for the no-decision. The Orioles gladly took the win, their power and bullpen leading the...

Bullpen shuttle shuts down (O's lead 3-2)
Exactly one month has passed since the Orioles made a roster move to bring up a reliever from the minors. They recalled left-hander Jayson Aquino from Triple-A Norfolk on July 5 and optioned him after the game. Stefan Crichton and Mike Wright were reinstated from the 10-day disabled list and optioned. Jeremy Hellickson was acquired from the Phillies. Yefry Ramirez was acquired from the Yankees and assigned to Double-A Bowie. That's it for pitching transactions. The shuttle has stalled. The...

Tillman moved to bullpen

Tillman moved to bullpen
Following another start that fell significantly short of his typical output in previous years, Chris Tillman is being moved to the Orioles bullpen for an undetermined period of time. Manager Buck Showalter said Tillman will be available for Sunday's series finale against the Tigers and won't start next week while the Orioles are on the West Coast. Tillman is 1-7 with an 8.10 ERA and 2.040 WHIP in 15 starts over 66 2/3 innings. He was charged with five earned runs and seven total Thursday...
