On "special day," Orioles add 27 international prospects
Calling Tuesday a "special day" for the Orioles, first-year senior director of international scouting Koby Perez was pretty thrilled with a class of 27 signings of young, amateur talent. It was especially solid work when you consider that the top players already had agreements with other teams in place well before Perez was hired by executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias in January. Elias had been hired in November. Perez and Elias are trying to give the Orioles'...

O's game blog: Looking to even the series with Tampa Bay
The Orioles' final road trip before the All-Star break continues tonight in St. Petersburg, Fla. where the Orioles face the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays won the series opener 6-3 last night as Kevin Kiermaier hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth. Tampa Bay (49-36) is the American League wild-card leader but trails the Yankees by 6 1/2 games in the AL East. Coming into this series, Tampa Bay was 1-3-2 over its past six series and the Rays went 13-16 in June. The Rays have trailed in 18 of...

July 2 arrives as the Orioles dive into the international market
July 2 has arrived. It's the day where a new international amateur signing period begins and teams all around Major League Baseball announce signings. This year the Orioles will not be left out. They expect to announce as many as 30 or more signings in a class expected to be pitcher heavy. MLB teams have a limited amount of pool money to sign players in a period that begins today and runs through next June 15. The Orioles, at nearly $6.5 million, are in a group of teams with the most to spend....

O's game blog: Eshelman makes major league debut in road trip opener
The Orioles begin their last road trip before the All-Star break tonight in St. Petersburg against the Tampa Bay Rays. The O's will play three there and three this weekend at Toronto before the break. The Orioles took two of three over the weekend against Cleveland, allowing just two runs and 21 hits in 27 innings with five walks and 24 strikeouts. The Orioles went the full three-game series without allowing a homer for the first time since July 31-Aug. 2, 2017. Baltimore starting pitchers...

Moose on call to Hall, plus one in and one out for All-Star Game
Former Orioles right-hander Mike Mussina said it has certainly set in by now. He's a National Baseball Hall of Famer. He got the needed votes in January and he will take his place July 21 in Cooperstown among the game's all-time greats. "This is the Mount Everest of baseball and I get to be a part of it," Mussina said Sunday at Camden Yards after he threw out the first pitch and O's manager Brandon Hyde caught it. Mussina got 76.7 percent of the vote, making the Hall in his sixth year of...

No sweep: O's blanked 2-0 by Indians in series finale
After the Orioles scored 26 runs with 14 extra-base hits in the first two games of this series, today they ran into Cleveland right-hander Shane Bieber. And just like last month in Cleveland, they couldn't get much going. On May 19, the 24-year-old Indians pitcher recorded his first career shutout when he beat the Orioles. Today, in his 36th career start, he came up an inning short of his second. The Orioles won a series but failed to complete a sweep as they lost 2-0 to Cleveland on a warm...

O's game blog: Going for a series sweep against Indians
Today, an Orioles team that has not won a series since April 22-24 goes for a three-game sweep of Cleveland at Camden Yards. The Orioles have posted back-to-back 13-0 wins over the Indians. They became the first team in major league history to post back-to-back shutouts while scoring 13 or more each game. Friday and Saturday were the sixth and seventh times in team history that the club scored at least 13 runs during a shutout. It marked the O's first back-to-back shutouts since Sept. 2-3,...

So how could the Orioles have a weekend like this?

So how could the Orioles have a weekend like this?
No one could have seen this coming and there really is no rational explanation for why it happened. How could an Orioles team playing so poorly all year, one that was 4-19 in June, do this to a Cleveland Indians team that had the best June record in the league, going 16-7? The Orioles offense had scored three runs or less in nine of its previous 13 games and 17 times in the last 26. Then they go out and score 13 on back-to-back nights. O's pitchers allowed seven runs or more 11 times in the...

Stunning weekend: O's have back-to-back 13-0 wins over Cleveland
Well, it had sure been a while. Without two straight wins since May 4-6 and a series win since April 22-24, the Orioles got both today in another stunning shutout blowout win over the Cleveland Indians. That's the Indians team that had the best record in the American League in June when they got here at 16-7. An Indians team that beat the O's three of four last month in Cleveland. And an Indians team that began this series 14-4 versus Baltimore since the 2017 season. But with a 13-0 win last...

O's game blog: Going for two in a row against the Indians
The Orioles last won back-to-back games on May 4-6 against the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox. Today they take yet another shot at a two-game win streak when they host the Cleveland Indians. It's been 46 games since the last two-game streak. A win today would also end the club's drought in securing a series victory. The last by the Orioles was when they took two of three against the Chicago White Sox April 22-24. They are 0-17-1 in series play since then. The Orioles defeated the Indians...

Hyde on Sisco: "He took control back there last night"
He smashed a 411-foot homer in the first inning, drove in a career-high five runs and got robbed of a second homer last night. But when asked today which meant more to him, catching a shutout or having the big night at the plate, Chance Sisco quickly answered. "The shutout," he said. "I believe it was the first shutout I've caught in the big leagues and that was definitely fun. Every inning Cuz (coach Tim Cossins, catching instructor) just kept reminding me to keep the foot on the gas pedal...

Futures Game O's, the Friday farm and a very noteworthy win

Futures Game O's, the Friday farm and a very noteworthy win
It must be pretty exciting for the organization that the two Orioles pitching prospects to make the All-Star Futures Game are among the youngest players on either the American League or National League rosters. The rosters for the game on July 7 in Cleveland were announced Friday. Single-A Delmarva right-hander Grayson Rodriguez makes the roster at age 19 and Single-A Frederick lefty DL Hall joins him on the AL roster at 20. There are six players among the 50 players on both rosters that are 19...

Means strong start, early offense produce blowout win
The Orioles began play tonight with a record of 4-19 in June. They had lost 13 of the last 14 and 17 of 20. Cleveland began play with a June record of 16-7 - best in the American League. The O's offense has been slow enough recently to the point the club scored three runs or less nine times in the last 13 games and 17 times in the past 26. So the Orioles naturally scored four runs in the first and second innings tonight to lead 8-0 after two. They beat Cleveland 13-0 to improve to 23-58 at the...

O's game blog: John Means activated to pitch series opener
After losing back-to-back games to San Diego earlier this week, the Orioles homestand continues tonight at Camden Yards. They'll host the Cleveland Indians to start a three-game series. The Orioles (22-58) will play game No. 81 and will reach the midpoint of the season after tonight's game. They have lost 13 of 14 and 17 of the last 20 games. The Orioles are 9-30 at home and have lost seven straight at Oriole Park. With a .315 batting average, the Orioles' Hanser Alberto ranks sixth in the...

O's skipper showing patience as losses mount (plus Triple-A All-Stars)
If there is one thing we have learned about Orioles manager Brandon Hyde during a very trying season it's this: He has amazing patience. He has to answer some of the same questions both before and after every game. It's usually about his pitchers giving up too many homers, throwing too many pitches middle-middle, their continued struggles and the club's starting pitching depth at Triple-A Norfolk being poor. Alex Cobb ended last season pitching great and then got hurt. Dan Straily pitched to...

Keep swingin': Hanser Alberto now among the AL's top 10 hitters
Maybe if big league teams knew he'd be batting over .300 and be the majors' leading hitter against left-handed pitching, Hanser Alberto would not have bounced around over the winter and into spring training like a hot potato and not a wanted young player. After a winter that started with him playing for Texas, Alberto was claimed via waivers by the Yankees, then by the Orioles, followed by the Giants and then again by the Orioles. The Yankees claimed him Nov. 2 from the Rangers and the...

O's pitchers roughed up again as San Diego sweeps
Another game and another day when Orioles pitchers got roughed up. They allowed five more homers on this warm afternoon at Camden Yards as the Padres beat the O's 10-5 to complete a two-game sweep. The Orioles fall to 22-58 at the 80-game mark. They have lost 13 of 14, 17 of 20 and 21 of their last 26 games. They fall to 9-30 at home and to 0-17-1 in their past 18 series. Right-hander Dylan Bundy pitched out of a first-and-third, no-outs jam in the first. But he allowed two homers over the...

O's game blog: Bundy pitches series finale against Padres
Right-hander Dylan Bundy (3-9, 4.59 ERA) gets the start this afternoon as the Orioles host San Diego to conclude a two-game series. The Padres hit four homers in last night's 8-3 win, including one by Manny Machado, who drove in two runs. Over his last seven starts, Bundy has posted a 3.86 ERA. Bundy made five starts in the month of May, going 2-2 with a 2.64 ERA. He held opponents to a .195 (22-for-113) batting average and four home runs, and his 2.64 ERA in May ranked tied for ninth-best...

Henderson talks about signing with the Orioles
For the Orioles, two days and two press conferences to announce top-draft-pick signings. Yesterday the Orioles introduced No. 1 pick catcher Adley Rutschman, and today it was prep shortstop Gunnar Henderson, taken No. 42 overall.
