A few thoughts after the Orioles' loss to the Rays

A few thoughts after the Orioles' loss to the Rays
The Orioles came up short in their bid to get a three-game sweep to start this important nine-game road trip. They lost 7-6 to Tampa Bay this afternoon to take two of three in the series. They fall to 76-63 with their second loss in the last six games. They are 31-38 on the road, 32-27 versus the American League East and 11-4 against the Rays. Dylan Bundy allowed five runs and seven hits over 3 2/3 innings. He has given up nine runs in seven innings in two starts at Tropicana Field. The O's...

O's game blog: Orioles are 11-3 against the Rays in 2016
The Orioles today are looking for their first three-game road sweep of this season and first three-game sweep at Tropicana Field since May 6-8, 2014. Now one game out of first place in the American League East and leading the second wild card by one game, the Orioles (76-62) have won four of five and six of their last nine. A win today would improve them to .500 at 26-26 since the All-Star break. O's starting pitchers have allowed five runs and seven hits in 14 innings in this series. The...

Are the Orioles elevating their play in time for the stretch run?

Are the Orioles elevating their play in time for the stretch run?
Maybe it is not enough of a sample size to make any judgements at all, but the Orioles seem to have elevated their play in the last few games. They went into St. Petersburg to face a Tampa Bay team that was 12-8 in its previous 20 games and with a winning record since the All-Star break. They then won 7-3 and 11-2 at Tropicana Field. Yes, the Rays are in last place, but they were 16-8 in their last 24 home games before this series. In their previous three American League East series, Tampa Bay...

A few notes on the Orioles' 11-2 win over the Rays

A few notes on the Orioles' 11-2 win over the Rays
For the second game in a row the Orioles used a big inning to break open a game at Tropicana Field. For an offense that had scored three runs or fewer in 26 of 49 games in the second half at the start of this series, it's a good sign. The Orioles scored six runs in the top of the fourth tonight and went on to beat the Rays 11-2. They are 76-62 and have taken the first two games of this three-game series. The Orioles have now won two straight American League East series after losing five in a...

O's game blog: Yovani Gallardo on the mound in Game 2 against TB
After Monday's 7-3 win over Tampa Bay, the Orioles are 75-62 with 25 games to play in the 2016 regular season. They start play tonight in third place, two games out in the American League East. They are tied with Detroit for the second AL wild card spot with both teams one game behind Boston, which is holding the top wild card berth, while the Orioles and Tigers are two games ahead of Houston. The pennant push is on. The Orioles have 14 remaining games on the road, where they are 30-37. They...

O's get a big win, plus a look at the final day on the farm
The Orioles don't seem to want to go down without a fight. It is rather admirable and I'm sure appreciated by the fan base. They are 3-1 since losing that series against Toronto that dropped them four games out of first place in the American League East. They pulled within two games, dropped three back and now are back at two games off the AL East lead. Certainly, they are right there in the wild card race, tied with Detroit for the second wild card spot, with both teams one game behind...

O's beat Tampa Bay as Ubaldo Jimenez pitches complete game
On Sunday, the Orioles fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and could not overcome the early deficit. Today was quite different. Down 3-0 in the first on the road against Tampa Bay, the Orioles stormed back with two runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to beat the Rays 7-3 at Tropicana Field. The Orioles are 75-62 overall, 30-37 on the road and 10-3 versus the Rays as they begin a nine-game road trip in the win column. Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez allowed a three-run homer in the first inning...

Duquette talks Bundy and Gausman, plus a look at the RISP stat
After pitching a total of 63 1/3 innings from 2013-2015, Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy is at 90 2/3 innings after his most recent outing against the Yankees. Bundy was limited after his Tommy John surgery from June 2013 and the subsequent rehab in addition to a shoulder issue that ended his 2015 season. But as the Orioles push for a playoff spot with 26 games to go, there is no indication that the club will skip any of Bundy's starts or consider shutting him down before the season ends....

Wade Miley on his start, Chris Davis on the loss against New York

Wade Miley on his start, Chris Davis on the loss against New York
After a two-start stretch where he pitched to an ERA of 3.75, left-hander Wade Miley could not build on that today. His troubles started with the first pitch. He walked the first two batters to set up what turned into a three-run inning as the New York Yankees beat the Orioles 5-2. There would be no shutout or three-game sweep today. "Just didn't throw strikes," Miley said of his laborious 36-pitch first inning. "Walked the first two hitters of the game. I was able to get two outs. Gave up...

O's come up short on bid to sweep, lose 5-2 to Yankees
After back-to-back shutouts of the Yankees in this series and three straight games dating to last weekend, today the Orioles' pitching didn't measure up. On top of that, the Orioles went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position the first six innings. The O's fell behind 3-0 in the first inning today and never could catch up in a 5-2 loss to the Yankees. They fall to 74-62 and now head to St. Petersburg to play the Rays to start an important nine-game road trip. The Blue Jays won this...

O's game blog: It's Miley against Pineda in series finale
After posting wins of 8-0 and 2-0 the last two nights, today the Orioles look for a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Yankees have just six hits, all singles, in this series, going 6-for-57 (.105) at bat. The Orioles have recorded three straight shutouts of the Yankees for the first time ever. They have allowed 14 hits in those games. O's starters Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman have thrown 11 2/3 scoreless innings at the Yankees this weekend. Over the...

A few notes and observations on another shutout win

A few notes and observations on another shutout win
So yes, it is kind of crazy that the Orioles allowed 27 runs and 36 hits against the Yankees in back-to-back games last weekend and now have allowed no runs on 14 hits in three straight shutouts against the same team. According to STATS, LLC., the Orioles had never blanked the Yankees in three straight games. Until now. The last club to hold New York scoreless in three straight was the 1973 White Sox. This is also the first time the Birds have posted consecutive shutouts since doing so in Games...

O's game blog: A look at the O's pursuit of home run records
With 28 games remaining in the regular season, the 2016 Orioles' 213 homers already rank sixth among all clubs in team history. The Orioles are on a pace to hit 257 homers, which would tie the team record set in 1996. That total is tied for third-most in major league history. The O's all-time single-season homer leaders: 257 - 1996 217 - 2015 214 - 1985, 1998, 2012 213 - 2016 212 - 2013 As you can see, the Orioles' next homer will be No. 214 and tie this club for the third-most in club...

Trumbo on Bundy, Joseph's return and homer notes
Last weekend, on Friday night and Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, the Orioles lost two games to New York. They gave up 27 runs, 36 hits and six home runs in those games. But they shut out the Yankees in the series finale last Sunday in the Bronx and they did the same last night in Baltimore. So in the last two games versus New York, they have allowed no runs on 10 hits. Interestingly enough, Dylan Bundy started two of the four games - one of the two games where the Orioles gave up all...

Bundy on his outing, Trumbo and Alvarez on the power display
For one night, the Orioles got their hitting and pitching going well at the same time in an 8-0 win over the New York Yankees to start a three-game series at Camden Yards. With Toronto's loss, the Orioles (73-61) pulled to within three games of first place in the American League East. They recorded their sixth shutout of the season and third against New York. It's the O's largest shutout win over New York since an 8-0 road win on June 22, 2014. It's their largest home shutout versus New...

O's mash four homers in shutout of Yankees, take series opener
For a team that had scored three or fewer runs in 24 of 46 second-half games (going 3-21), tonight's second inning was quite welcome. The team leading the majors in homers mashed three of them in a span of four batters to take an early 6-0 lead. The Orioles went on to blank New York 8-0 in front of 24,226 at Camden Yards to start a three-game series. Dylan Bundy and three relievers teamed on a two-hitter for the O's sixth shutout. Looking to end a five-series American League East losing...

O's game blog: Dylan Bundy faces New York in series opener
Now sitting four games out in third place in the American League East and tied for the second AL wild card with Detroit, the Orioles begin a three-game series with the Yankees tonight at Camden Yards. The Orioles (72-61) just lost two of three to Toronto and have lost five straight AL East series after going 9-2-1 in their first 12 division series of the season. The Yankees (69-63) are in fourth in the AL East, 6 1/2 games out and are 2 1/2 back of the Orioles for that second wild card. The...

Jones on returning to lineup, Joseph on returning to team
Center fielder Adam Jones is returning to the Orioles lineup tonight. He's leading off in center field and in the lineup for the first time since a week ago at New York. He has missed the last five games with a strained left hamstring. A reporter asked him how he is feeling today. "I'm fine, how you feeling?" he said. Jones is not a fan of health updates, but he knew the questions would be coming. "(Want to) be there for my team," he said. "An exciting month. It's the last month of the...

A few things to track over the remaining 29 games (plus farm notes)
Despite the avalanche of negativity on the blog and social media yesterday, I notice the Orioles have a game scheduled with the Yankees tonight. I assume they will show up. I plan to go cover it, so I hope both teams are there. Yes, of course, the Orioles' poor play has given fans plenty of reasons to doubt them. Some of you have pointed each one of them out about 1,000 times now. So yeah, we kind of get it. But they also have 29 games left, are tied for the second wild card and are four games...

Is a division title chance slipping away from O's and will wild card be next?
On kind of a strange Wednesday for the Baltimore Orioles, their front office was quite active but their offense was not. While the Orioles scored just one run until down to their final out last night, they added two outfielders to their team. They acquired Drew Stubbs on a waiver claim from Texas. They traded for Michael Bourn from Arizona and gave up minor league outfielder Jason Heinrich. Bourn, 33, has batted .261/.307/.362 with 12 doubles, six triples, three home runs, 43 runs scored, 30...
