Delcarmen was a second-round pick of the Red Sox in 2000, and he played a fairly large role in Boston's 2007 World Series champion team, posting a 2.05 ERA in 44 games. The 30-year-old right-hander last appeared in the majors in 2010, posting a 4.99 ERA and 1.471 WHIP in 57 games between the Red Sox and Rockies. Last season, Delcarmen put up a 2.83 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 54 innings at Triple-A Norfolk, the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate. His effectiveness at the big league level seemed to drop off a few years ago as his strikeout totals dropped. Delcarmen averaged 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings from 2005-08, but that total fell to 6.6 in 2009, when his ERA jumped to 4.53. In 2010, Delcarmen struck out 6.5 per nine innings. MLB.com first reported the Delcarmen signing.
