The Nationals have added another bullpen option, signing right-handed reliever Manny Delcarmen to a minor league deal with an invitation to big league spring training, a source confirmed.
Delcarmen was a second-round pick of the Red Sox in 2000, and he played a fairly large role in Boston's 2007 World Series champion team, posting a 2.05 ERA in 44 games.

Last season, Delcarmen put up a 2.83 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 54 innings at Triple-A Norfolk, the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate.
His effectiveness at the big league level seemed to drop off a few years ago as his strikeout totals dropped. Delcarmen averaged 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings from 2005-08, but that total fell to 6.6 in 2009, when his ERA jumped to 4.53. In 2010, Delcarmen struck out 6.5 per nine innings.
