Machado with a grand slam as O's rout Chicago 10-2

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado had a rare run of four straight games without a hit. He ended that tonight. And the Orioles ended the Chicago White Sox's six-game winning streak.

The Sox entered with an American League best 16-6 record and a team ERA of 2.24. But they allowed a season-high in runs tonight as the O's beat Chicago 10-2 to start a four-game series and 10-game homestand.

The Orioles had scored just five runs their last four games but broke out big tonight. They hit three homers, including Machado's second career grand slam.

Leading 5-2 in the sixth, J.J. Hardy doubled and scored on an error for a 6-2 lead. Machado came up with the sacks full against reliever Jack Petricka and hit a first-pitch changeup into the O's bullpen. It was his seventh homer.

Machado's first grand slam was June 1, 2014 at Houston off Scott Feldman. Machado's RBI double in the third had ended an 0-for-17 run and his five RBIs is a new career high.

The Orioles had allowed 13 runs in the first inning this year and Chicago added two to that total tonight. With two outs and none on, Jose Abreu reached on an infield hit. Todd Frazier followed with a two-run homer. He hit a 1-2 curveball from Tyler Wilson over the left field wall for his sixth home run.

The O's scored one in their half of the first off left-hander John Danks. Machado walked with one out and moved up a base on a Chris Davis single. Adam Jones then smoked a double to center to score Machado, but Davis was cut down at the plate to end the inning. Jones began tonight without an RBI in his last nine games and also with a career .030 average against Danks at 1-for-33.

The Orioles scored four times with the help of two homers in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead. Machado's RBI double tied it 2-2. Davis followed with a two-run homer to right-center on the first pitch. No. 7 for Davis made it 4-2. Mark Trumbo followed that with a long homer to center and to make it 5-2. Trumbo hit No. 6 on a 3-1 pitch, an 88 mph fastball from Danks.

For the Orioles, this was the third time this year they hit back-to-back homers. For Trumbo, this was his first extra-base hit and RBI as an Oriole at Camden Yards. He was batting .414 at home in the season's first eight games, but all 12 previous hits had been singles.

Wilson came up an out short of qualifying for a win. Over 4 2/3 innings he gave up four hits and two runs, throwing a season-high 91 pitches. Mychal Givens got a huge out in the fifth when he fanned Frazier with the bases loaded and the O's ahead just 5-2. He went 1 1/3 innings, stranding two more Sox runners in the sixth. Dylan Bundy pitched two scoreless innings to reduce his ERA to 2.00.

Chicago lost for just the second time in 10 games. The Orioles improved to 13-8 on the season and to 8-1 at home. That is the best home record in the majors.

In the second game of the series on Friday night, Mike Wright (1-2, 6.23 ERA) pitches against left-hander Carlos Rodon (1-2, 4.05 ERA).
