Miguel Gonzalez and Caleb Joseph comment after loss to Seattle

Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph said he'd like to have one pitch back tonight. It was a changeup on a 1-1 count from Miguel Gonzalez to Robinson Cano with two men on in the fifth inning. The game was tied 1-1 at the time and runners were on second and third. Cano hit his 29th career homer off O's pitching to break the game open and Seattle went on to earn a 6-3 win. "It cost us the game," Joseph said. "We had a base open there and he's a dangerous hitter. We've done the best we can to minimize his damage. He's a great player. He took advantage of a mistake. We all want it back, but that's baseball. He gets paid a lot of money to hit mistakes. We'll make a better quality pitch next time." Gonzalez began tonight with an ERA of 1.82 over his last four starts and 3.14 over his last 10. He had also had success against Cano, who was just 2-for-26 in his career off him before he hit the three-run homer. "Split-finger," Gonzalez said of that pitch. "I've had success with it throughout my career against him. I decided to throw that pitch, but it just stayed up middle." Gonzalez was asked if the Orioles considered pitching around Cano there. "I thought it was good getting... trying to go after him," Gonzalez said. "I've had good success against him, just left the ball up and he got a piece of it." The Orioles have struggled to score lately. Is that putting more pressure on the pitchers? "We've just got to go out there and try to do our best," Gonzalez said. "We've been doing a pretty good job. Everyone's been going deep in games, except for tonight. We can't be perfect all the time. "Every game nowadays is going to count. Just have to go out and make our pitches. Just have to go out next time and do the best we can." Gonzalez went five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs on 91 pitches. "He was searching with some mechanical issues," Joseph said. "He didn't do bad really, just that one swing to Cano. He was grinding, trying to find his split. He's had a couple of really nice starts for us. He'll bounce back next time." The Orioles have scored five runs the last three games and Joseph was also asked about that lack of runs putting more pressure on the pitching staff. "At any point, we can put up eight runs," Joseph said. "This team has done it and we'll do it again. We're trying to put up runs and they're trying to put up zeroes. Whether we are scoring or not their job doesn't change. "We're facing some good pitchers, too. We're going to get it. Sometimes they don't fall. We'll stay within ourselves and we believe in our offense. Keep swinging, that's all you can do in this game." Joseph tonight had a double and homer for his sixth career multi-hit game. O's batters have fanned at least seven times in 14 consecutive games, the longest streak of the season. The club record is 15 from May 6-20, 2012. Manny Machado has back-to-back three-hit games for the fourth time in his career. He is batting .379 (11-for-29) with four multi-hit games his last six games.
