Previewing BBWAA awards week

Previewing BBWAA awards week
It's awards week in baseball, with the big four - MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year - set to be handed out over the next four nights by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Despite their success and deep roster of players who enjoyed impressive seasons, the Nationals have an opportunity to emerge with only one of these four awards. Both Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg are finalists for the National League Cy Young Award (along with Clayton Kershaw). Anthony...

David Huzzard: The dilemma of picking MVP between Harper and Turner

David Huzzard: The dilemma of picking MVP between Harper and Turner
I have a bit of a dilemma. It isn't a bad dilemma. It is a situation Nationals fans would be agreeable to and one many would call me an overly bright-eyed optimist for predicting, and it is this: I can't decide who to pick for National League MVP, Bryce Harper or Trea Turner. From all indications, Harper is poised to have a season much like 2015 and Turner is ready to pick up where he left off in 2016. That makes it a hard choice. Is it the shortstop who is likely to hit 20 homers and steal...

Explaining WAR's role in MVP results

Explaining WAR's role in MVP results
Mike Trout and Kris Bryant were named the American and National League MVPs, begging a question: Does this mean that the Baseball Writers' Association of America will judge MVP candidates by different standards in the coming years? Both vote totals are a victory for the new-age sabermetrics statistic called WAR - wins above replacement. Although debatable about what it means, WAR tries to summarize a players' all-around ability in one number. Both second-place finishers - the Nationals'...

Murphy finishes second in NL MVP vote to Bryant

Murphy finishes second in NL MVP vote to Bryant
Daniel Murphy had an MVP-caliber season and might well have taken home the hardware had he put up the same stat line in a previous year. This year, though, Murphy was forced to take a back seat to Kris Bryant, who as the best player on the best team in baseball easily captured the National League MVP. Bryant, the brightest young star on a Cubs roster filled with them, won his first career MVP this evening, garnering 29-of-30 first-place votes and 415 total points from members of the Baseball...

Multiple Nationals are staking claims for major NL awards

Multiple Nationals are staking claims for major NL awards
As the Nationals take aim at winning the National League East, they've got a chance at a repeat winner for NL MVP. And it is possible they could be the 19th team in baseball history to have teammates win the Cy Young and MVP awards in the same season. Could it be Daniel Murphy following Bryce Harper as the NL MVP, with either pitcher Stephen Strasburg or Max Scherzer winning the Cy Young? How about Wilson Ramos combining with either Strasburg or Scherzer? Any of those combinations are...

Harper credits Desmond, Werth after winning MVP (plus Sizemore note)

Harper credits Desmond, Werth after winning MVP (plus Sizemore note)
Bryce Harper was clearly humbled by winning his first National League Most Valuable Player award last night. Watching the broadcast on MLB Network, Harper was emotional while speaking with his family surrounding him. He talked of how much hard work he put in, not just over his first four years in the majors, but since childhood with his mom and dad. Harper was also quick to credit his Nationals teammates, specifically Jayson Werth and Ian Desmond, for helping him develop on and off the field....

Though the Orioles were shut out this year in the Baseball Writers' Association of America awards, third baseman Manny Machado and first baseman Chris Davis gained a measure of notice. Machado placed fourth tonight for Most Valuable Player in the American League, while Davis finished 14th. Machado received four third-place votes, 11 fourth, five fifth, one sixth, one seventh, one eighth, three ninth and one 10th for 158 total points. Notes on O'Day, AL MVP and more

Notes on O'Day, AL MVP and more
The Tigers no longer appear to be in the running for free agent reliever Darren O'Day after acquiring closer Francisco Rodriguez yesterday from the Brewers. The more pressing question over here is whether the Orioles remain in the hunt. I received confirmation on the FOXSports.com report that O'Day is seeking a four-year deal in the $28-$36 million range. The Tigers don't seem inclined to pay closer money for a set-up man. The Orioles wouldn't do it last winter with left-hander Andrew...

Orioles shut out in BBWAA awards

Orioles shut out in BBWAA awards
Leading the majors in home runs has its privileges, but it doesn't guarantee hardware in the offseason. Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is not a finalist for the American League Most Valuable Player award, the announcement coming tonight from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Third baseman Manny Machado also is excluded. Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain, Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson and Angels center fielder Mike Trout are the finalists. The winner will be revealed on...

As expected, Bryce Harper named a finalist for NL MVP

As expected, Bryce Harper named a finalist for NL MVP
In no shock, the Baseball Writers' Association of America named Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper as a finalist for the National League Most Valuable Player award. Harper is the favorite to take home his first MVP when it's announced on Nov. 19, but the young slugger faces stiff competition with Reds first baseman Joey Votto and Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in contention. After battling injuries the past two seasons, Harper experienced a breakout campaign in 2015. He...
