Deadline day arrives with Orioles still searching for same upgrades

Tarik Skubal

The trade deadline clock is ticking louder. Pencils are down at 6 p.m., though deals tend to trickle in after it. A clean getaway from the incremental non-updates, rumors and speculation.

Who’s gonna miss it?

The Orioles are missing a second starter, reliever and right-handed hitting outfielder. They have one of each so far with Zach Eflin, Seranthony Domínguez and Cristian Pache. Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias is trying to find more matches.

The only players surrendered have been outfielder Austin Hays and mid-level prospects Jackson Baumeister, Mac Horvath and Matthew Etzel. MLB Pipeline ranked Horvath 10th in the organization and Baseball America has him 13th.

Elias has to climb up that list to get a top-tier arm, but other starters could slot in the middle of the rotation at a less painful cost.

Checking back on yesterday's tense win, trade talks and more

Cowser celebrates with Mountcastle after hr

The first road trip of the second half produced a 3-3 record for the Orioles, who fumbled a three-run lead in the ninth yesterday and won 7-6 in the 10th. They lead the Yankees by two games in the American League East during a stretch when they could have plummeted down the standings.

Maybe it isn’t the best division in baseball anymore.

Corbin Burnes remains one of the best pitchers and a very smart trade acquisition despite costing DL Hall and Joey Ortiz and likely being a rental. He was the stopper again yesterday before Craig Kimbrel’s blown save, holding the Marlins to three runs – the last scoring after he exited - in a season-high 7 1/3 innings for his 17th quality start. He’s so good, his ERA actually went up from 2.38 to 2.45.

Burnes made his major league debut in Miami on July 10, 2018 and he recorded a six-out save.  He won a Cy Young Award three years later and could make it two this season.

That’s your Game 1 starter. That’s what they look like.

Not just any rumor: O's said to have interest in Detroit's Tarik Skubal

Tarik Skubal

The Orioles that played in Texas over the weekend look more like the Orioles we saw for most of this season and not the Orioles who went 1-5 on their homestand heading into the All-Star break.

Perhaps whatever ailed the team for several days of lackluster baseball is gone forever and more solid play and wins are ahead of us.

What is directly ahead of us – besides the rest of this road trip – is the July 30 trading deadline. And news in recent days that the Orioles have interest in Detroit ace lefty Tarik Skubal.

What we don’t know is if the Tigers would move him under any circumstances or only if they get blown away by a deal.

The Orioles, with their fertile farm, could probably blow away any team with an offer – if they choose to make such a blockbuster deal.
