Nats clean up play to beat Marlins 6-2 (updated)

MIAMI – The Nationals needed Monday’s off-day in Miami to get past an ugly weekend back at home. While still a young team – Sunday’s starting lineup averaged 24.4 years old, younger than each of the lineups posted by Triple-A Rochester and Double-A Harrisburg that day – the Nats were uncharacteristically sloppy in the field on Saturday and Sunday.
A team can’t lose 109 times by accident. Flukes and bad luck don’t explain three streaks of 11 or more defeats in a season and 42 in the last 46 games. The White Sox are exceptionally bad, and the Orioles, who absorbed plenty of beatings in their rebuild phase, aren’t giving an ounce of sympathy. No one felt sorry for them. When an opponent is down
With Monday's 13-3 win in the homestand opener against the Chicago White Sox, the Orioles tonight are taking another run at a three-game win streak. They have been hard to come by lately. Their last came from July 14-20 when the Orioles won the last game of the first half versus the Yankees and the first two of the second half at Texas. The last ti
MIAMI – Cade Cavalli last stepped on a mound on June 21 with High-A Wilmington. It was the third – and last – of his official rehab starts as he continued his recovery from last year’s Tommy John surgery. And it was the most encouraging of his rehab outings to date: He pitched three scoreless, hitless innings. The initial target date for his major
The Orioles are pushing to regain a significant chunk of their health before October. Let’s start with reliever Danny Coulombe, who faced hitters today for the first time since undergoing surgery in June to remove bone chips from his left elbow. Coulombe has thrown off a mound, but today represented a significant step in his progression toward a re
Anthony Santander is in right field tonight and Coby Mayo stays on the bench as the Orioles continue their series against the White Sox at Camden Yards. Eloy Jiménez is the designated hitter. Emmanuel Rivera is at third base. Gunnar Henderson hit his 34th home run yesterday to tie Cal Ripken Jr. (1991) and Miguel Tejada (2004) for most by an Oriole
MIAMI – Hopefully, the Nationals used an off-day on Labor Day to reset and forget about this weekend’s series against the Cubs, in which they were swept in three games at home. Maybe spending the rare holiday off-day in the South Florida sunshine is just what they needed. And what better way to shake off a home sweep than a division rival that you
The Nationals are getting their most durable reliever back for the season’s final month. Derek Law, the workhorse setup man who landed on the injured list two weeks ago with a flexor strain in his right elbow, was activated Monday and will be available for tonight’s series opener in Miami. Law was confident all along his IL stint would be short, an
On a day the Orioles had one of their highest-scoring games of the year and a day when every starter both had a hit and scored a run, one Oriole had two hits and now the club hopes he can get hot again. Catcher/DH Adley Rutschman had two hits – one a bloop single – and drove in a run. It was just his third two-game game since Aug. 10. Since posting
Coby Mayo started at third base Sunday afternoon in Denver after rejoining the Orioles on their expanded roster and he lined a single the opposite way for his second major league hit. He also scored his third run. He seemed comfortable in the box and in the field. The Rockies started left-hander Ty Blach. The Orioles placed Ramón Urías on the 10-da
The start to the Orioles' latest homestand, which began with them playing easily the worst team in the majors, could have gone better. Right-hander Corbin Burnes, who began today with an 8.59 ERA over his last three starts and 7.36 over his past five, gave up a couple of soft hits and both runners scored in the top of the first to give the Chicago
