Significant progress for Hernandez

Reliever David Hernandez threw 30 pitches during today's batting practice session in Sarasota, and manager Buck Showalter said the reports were favorable. Showalter sounds encouraged, and it's possible that Hernandez, who's recovering from a badly sprained left ankle, could rejoin the Orioles within a week to 10 days. Hernandez will take two days off and report to Double-A Bowie, which is closing the regular season at Richmond. He's scheduled to throw one inning. Hernandez could pitch...
Brian Roberts and Jake Fox made an appearance at BWI Airport today, but don't worry, you didn't miss a chance to see this pair of Birds in person. The event wasn't open to the public, but Roberts and Fox participated in the Southwest Airlines "Trading Places" promotion today. The Orioles announced that B-Rob and Fox would be trying their hands at a variety of jobs carried out by Southwest employees at BWI. I don't have any further details to pass along, but if I get my hands on some,...
Three top pitching prospects from the Nationals 2010 draft crop will make their professional debuts this week. Sammy Solis, A.J. Cole and Rob Ray have impressed Nationals pitching coordinator Spin Williams as they embark on their first game appearances since spring time. University of San Diego left-hander Sammy Solis will start tonight for Hagerstown and get two innings. Solis, picked in the second round and standing 6 foot 5 inches and weighing 225 pounds, is a "big body lefty who has a...

Lou Montanez designated for assignment The Orioles today announced that they have added three players to their roster from Triple-A Norfolk, recalling OF Nolan Reimold and INF Brandon Snyder and selecting the contract of INF Robert Andino. To make room for Andino on the 40-man roster, OF Lou Montanez was designated for assignment. Reimold batted .320 (31-97) with six doubles, two home runs, a .460 on-base percentage and .443 slugging percentage in the month of August and had reached base...
The Orioles have designated outfielder Lou Montanez for assignment to make room for infielder Robert Andino on the 40-man roster. Montanez is batting .289 with five doubles, two triples, two homers and 20 RBIs in 24 games at Triple-A Norfolk. He's missed a significant chunk of the season with an oblique injury. Montanez has batted .223 in 93 games over parts of the last three seasons with the Orioles, including .140 in 26 games this year. Andino, outfielder Nolan Reimold and first baseman...
It's almost impossible to properly thank someone for a 53-year relationship. The O's did post a nice thank you in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph newspaper, as their tenure as the Bluefield Orioles parent club came to an end after last night's season-ending doubleheader. This picture by the way is of the last championship team there, the 2001 Bluefield Orioles.
Jim Johnson has made two appearances since coming off the disabled list, and they've been under drastically different circumstances. He entered a 5-0 game in the ninth inning, manager Buck Showalter's way of easing him back into major league competition. And he replaced Brian Matusz last night with the potential tying run on first base and no outs in the seventh. The easing process didn't take long. Johnson gave up a single before retiring the next three batters, striking out pinch-hitter...
Put all lunch plans on hold for this Friday, September 3 - unless you're thinking of getting together with fellow O's fans to join the live video chats with Jeremy Guthrie and Adam Jones scheduled to start at noon right here on MASNsports.com. Guthrie will kick things off with MASNsports.com Orioles beat reporter Steve Melewski at noon, with teammate Adam Jones to follow at 12:45 p.m. Each player will sit with Steve to talk Orioles baseball and answer questions from the O's reporter -...
Anybody planning a trip to Pittsburgh for Labor Day to watch the Nationals take on the Pirates at beautiful PNC Park? I know the Racing Presidents are traveling north for the weekend to race those Pittsburgh Pierogies and from talking to many of you, it sounds like NatsTown will be well represented in the 'Burgh for the series. The trip to Pittsburgh is an easy 4-5 hour drive, tickets are affordable and PNC Park is one of the best venues in Major League Baseball. Need more convincing? The...
Manager Buck Showalter needs to go 0-24 to match Juan Samuel's record. The pressure's on. I like how Showalter walks into the interview room after the final out and asks for the time of game, as if he's hoping that his club took care of us. "Stay under three, right?" Exactly. Anything under three hours is good. And 2 ½ will make us do a happy dance. So I guess the Orioles took advantage of the soft spot in Boston's rotation last night. That must have been it. They...
