It's almost here! FanFest is this Saturday at the Baltimore Convention Center. I am ready to see players and Orioles fans come together and get excited for the season. Considering the absolutely freezing temperatures this offseason (or winter, as non-baseball lovers call it,) I cannot wait for warm nights at Camden Yards. Even though spring training is still a few weeks away, I'm declaring this the start of the 2014 baseball season. We at MASN have been preparing for Saturday's event. As...

Weekly Wrap: Dreaming of warm weather and waiting for a big move

Weekly Wrap: Dreaming of warm weather and waiting for a big move
Unfortunately, this week has come with bad news for Orioles fans. News broke Wednesday that there may be issues with outfielder Tyler Colvin's physical, and yesterday, the Rays signed Grant Balfour to a two-year deal. However, it has also been reported that the O's are making progress in talks with former Rays closer Fernando Rodney. The Orioles also signed left-hander Aaron Laffey to a minor league deal this week. The long-awaited signing of Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka occurred this...

Throwback Thursday: An All-Star play
With backhanded stops, barehanded plays and diving grabs, Orioles fans are spoiled by watching Manny Machado's great defensive plays game in and game out. In his first All-Star Game, Machado demonstrated his tremendous defensive talent to the entire nation on Paul Goldschmidt's bouncer down the line. A play that looks almost routine to Baltimore fans opened the eyes of baseball enthusiasts everywhere to the Orioles' rising star. Watch the video below to relive Machado's spectacular...

Yard Work: Is snow helpful or harmful to the field at Camden Yards?

Yard Work: Is snow helpful or harmful to the field at Camden Yards?
Camden Yards is a gem, a rare baseball cathedral that blends classic, retro style with today's version of the national pastime. But its lush outfield grass and manicured infield don't happen by accident. They're the result of a year-round effort by head groundskeeper Nicole McFadyen and her talented grounds crew. Each month during this offseason, Orioles Buzz will check in with McFadyen to see what's happening on the field at Camden Yards as the grounds crew prepares for the 2014...

The Orioles and the 1976 incident that got scoreboard replays banned

The Orioles and the 1976 incident that got scoreboard replays banned
Tucked in at the end of the press release announcing Major League Baseball's new instant replay system - MASNsports.com's Steve Melewski has the full rundown here - is a paragraph announcing the return of one creative use of technology that has been absent from big league ballparks for 38 years. "Clubs will now have the right to show replays of all close plays on its ballpark scoreboard, regardless of whether the play is reviewed," reads the passage. Though it makes little sense,...

Weekly Wrap: O's offseason heats up in Sarasota

Weekly Wrap: O's offseason heats up in Sarasota
While the start of spring training is still a few weeks away, some Orioles headed to Sarasota this week for mini-camp. Ed Smith Stadium housed pitchers, up-and-comers, players recovering from injuries and some newcomers this week. Pitchers included Tommy Hunter (the strongest candidate for the O's closer role), Hunter Harvey (the O's first-round pick in 2013), Kevin Gausman, and Dylan Bundy. For the first time in a year, Bundy said that he was throwing without pain, and the right-hander has...

Throwback Thursday: An aspiring ace

Throwback Thursday: An aspiring ace
In the Orioles' recent history, one of their biggest trades was with Seattle in 2008 when they acquired Tony Butler, Kam Mickolio, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman and, of course, Adam Jones in exchange for Erik Bedard. It didn't take long for Jones to prove his value, making the All-Star team and winning a Gold Glove in his second season in Baltimore, but Tillman took more time to develop. After four seasons of jumping between the majors and minors because of inconsistency, the right-hander...

When fans flocked to welcome 1954 Orioles to their new nest on 33rd Street

When fans flocked to welcome 1954 Orioles to their new nest on 33rd Street
Pitchers and catchers don't report for more than three weeks to Sarasota, but fans are already eager for the 2014 Orioles season. FanFest at the Baltimore Convention Center on Feb. 1 will unofficially kick off the new campaign, and before you know it, the sounds of bat meeting ball and ball popping into mitt will be emanating from the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota. Battery mates will show up first, then the whole team, then there will be exhibition games to follow as the Birdland...

Scouting report on catcher Johnny Monell from his winter league GM

Scouting report on catcher Johnny Monell from his winter league GM
CAGUAS, Puerto Rico - One of the Orioles not in mini-camp in Sarasota this week is catcher Johnny Monell, who was acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 30 in exchange for cash considerations. Monell, who got his first taste of the majors in 2013, is expected to compete for the role of Matt Wieters' backup in spring training. Monell is currently playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League - officially Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente - with los Criollos de Caguas,...

Weekly Wrap: Looking toward spring training

Weekly Wrap: Looking toward spring training
Thirty-four days until pitchers and catchers report to Sarasota, Fla., for the start of spring training. But who's counting? This week, MASN announced its spring training broadcast schedule, with six games being aired on MASN HD. Something even closer to look forward to is the Orioles' annual FanFest event. We have exciting games, events and more planned for the MASN booth. While I have spent many days and nights at Camden Yards, I will admit that this will be the first year that I attend...

Throwback Thursday: Jones' extreme rally cap

Throwback Thursday: Jones' extreme rally cap
From keeping quiet about a no-hitter to sticking to a strict routine, baseball players can get wrapped up in superstitions. With the Orioles down 2-0 against the Tigers, Adam Jones took one superstition to a whole other level. After the Orioles mascot accidentally dropped his hat into the home dugout, Jones picked up the oversized cap, put it on and cheered on his teammates. That inning, the Birds scored three runs and would go on to win the game 4-2. Was it Jones' rally cap that gave...

Bird Talk: Machado attends concert with A-Rod, Mussina's Hall of Fame eligibility

Bird Talk: Machado attends concert with A-Rod, Mussina's Hall of Fame eligibility
As I write this, it is currently 16 degrees with a wind chill somewhere in the negative numbers. One thing that is helping me with this weather is knowing spring training is right around the corner. Even though it's still the offseason, many in the media are still talking about the Orioles. First, I'm starting with some news that disturbed the residents of Charm City. It's going to be OK, Birdland. Just remember to breathe. * Hearts sank in Baltimore shortly into the New Year when Yankees...

Orioles setting spring training standard in Sarasota

Orioles setting spring training standard in Sarasota
During this frigid time of year, people want to escape to the beach, warmer temperatures and sunny skies. One place to escape to is Sarasota, the spring training home of the Baltimore Orioles. Since 2010, the Sarasota County tourism industry has benefited greatly from housing the Orioles during spring training. Not only has the county been able to run "Visit Sarasota" ads during O's and Nats games, it has also seen an increase in visitors from the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. And let...

Beisbol and ex-Bird watching, island style

Beisbol and ex-Bird watching, island style
CAROLINA, Puerto Rico - While you're pondering whether the thermometer will register below-zero readings in the coming days, I'm doing a little former Bird watching in an island paradise, where the local baseball league has reached in its round-robin playoffs. Four teams are vying for the opportunity to represent Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Series, and while catching my first Puerto Rican Winter League game - officially La Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente - between the Indios de...

Weekly Wrap: Will the Orioles make a big trade to start off the new year?

Weekly Wrap: Will the Orioles make a big trade to start off the new year?
Happy 2014, Orioles fans! After watching the O's offseason get off to an extremely slow start, I'm sure many of your New Year's resolutions include something along the lines of "Watch the Orioles make a big move." The holidays and 2013 are over, but there are still many big-name free agents available. However, in the past, the Orioles have not been aggressive when it comes to free agency. Although the Orioles are still looking for starting pitching, they do have a solid list of pitching...

Throwback Thursday: Home run robbery
It's officially 2014, which means we're officially ready for the 2014 baseball season to begin. Who am I kidding? I've been ready for opening day since the last out of the 2013 season. This week, in effort to get fans pumped for a new year, we're throwin' it back to one of Nick Markakis' best defensive plays from last season. Watch him rob Adrian Beltre of a home run in the video below and check back every Thursday for more memorable moments from 2013. Your browser does not support...

Looking back at our favorite Orioles memories through Instagram

Looking back at our favorite Orioles memories through Instagram
The 2013 season was another fantastic year at Camden Yards. Spending the summer days at Orioles games led to many great memories for me - Manny Machado's spectacular plays at third base, Chris Davis' insane year at the plate, and simply watching the sun set behind the stadium every night. On our Instagram feed, we asked you to post your favorite memories of 2013 with #masnOrioles. We got a great response, with people sharing pictures of their favorite players, photos of a beautiful sunset,...

In O's glory years, Blair made the impossible grabs seem routine

In O's glory years, Blair made the impossible grabs seem routine
News tonight that former Orioles center fielder Paul Blair has died at 69 hits hard. It's another of the players from the team's glory years gone too soon, another piece of Baltimore baseball history we'll no longer be able to reminisce with. I'll remember how he glided across the outfield green on 33rd Street, making the impossible seem routine. And the smile perpetually on his face. Blair was quite simply the best center fielder I ever saw, and growing up in Baltimore during the 1960s...

Weekly Wrap: O's offseason picking up, but not without problems

Weekly Wrap: O's offseason picking up, but not without problems
After a slow Winter Meetings, the Orioles' offseason seemed to pick up. However, it has not been without bumps in the road. To fill the void left by Jim Johnson, the Orioles sought out Grant Balfour. After the Birds had agreed with the the closer on a two-year, $15-million contract, news broke that there were complications with his physical, seriously jeopardizing the deal. Dan Duquette will speak to the media later today, so be sure to check in to the School of Roch for the latest...
