Duchscherer scheduled to pitch next week (and more)

Justin Duchscherer will make another attempt next week to go five innings in an extended spring training game. Manager Buck Showalter said Duchscherer will pitch Tuesday or Wednesday. According to the Orioles, Duchscherer left Tuesday's game in the third inning with spasms in his gluteus. He had completed four innings in his previous start despite being hit in the stomach by a line drive in the first, and he was scheduled to go five in his next outing. The spasms apparently began after Duchscherer fielded a bunt. He threw three more pitches before exiting the game. Showalter isn't committed to batting J.J. Hardy leadoff in every game while Brian Roberts is on the disabled list, but his options are limited. It's pretty much Hardy or Robert Andino, "J.J.'s doing well, swinging the bat well," Showalter said. "He feels good about himself and seems to be fine with it mentally. J.J.'s in a pretty good place right now." Showalter continued to marvel at the throw from catcher Matt Wieters last night that cut down Johnny Damon attempting to steal second base in the first inning. An average throw arrives at the bag in 2.0 seconds. Scouts rave over a time of 1.90. Showalter retreated to the video room and clocked Wieters' throw. "I couldn't believe what they were telling me," he said. "It was 1.74 to second base in the first inning."
