Flaherty on shoulder, plus other morning notes

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Infielder Ryan Flaherty expects to play Wednesday against the Red Sox in Sarasota after staying back in camp today and receiving treatment on his right shoulder.

Flaherty missed yesterday's game and remains shut down due to shoulder soreness that he doesn't consider serious.

"I guess it's been sore for about five or six days," he said this morning. "I was kind of going through it and they were just like, 'Take a couple days and let it die down.' It feels fine. If I had to play, I could play."

The soreness likely has been caused by his throwing, especially across the diamond. He's been at third base while Manny Machado has started at shortstop in preparation for the World Baseball Classic and with J.J. Hardy still not cleared to play.

"I think it could be," Flaherty said. "I think one of the challenges of being a utility player, moving around, is you're throwing from a lot of different angles. Just kind of getting used to it the first week and just try to get ahead of it and get it out of there."

Left-hander Richard Bleier, acquired from the Yankees on Feb. 21 for a player to be named later or cash, said he'll pitch for the first time this spring in Wednesday's game against the Red Sox at Ed Smith Stadium. The Orioles are easing him into competition after the Yankees designated him for assignment.

Bleier is in Team Israel's designated pitcher pool for the World Baseball Classic. He isn't eligible for the first round, but can be added to the roster if the team advances.

"I could if I wanted to, but it's my decision," said Bleier, who pitched in the qualifying rounds in 2013. "It's still my choice, so it made no sense not to (be in the pool), but I still don't know if I'd do it."

Pitchers listed behind starter Mike Wright include Mychal Givens, Jayson Aquino, Zach Stewart, Jimmy Yacabonis, Garrett Cleavinger, John Means, Cody Satterwhite and last year's first-round pick, right-hander Cody Sedlock.

Infielders Sean Coyle, Garabez Rosa and Erick Salcedo also made the trip from minor league camp.

The Orioles are listing Tyler Wilson as Thursday night's starter against the Yankees' Adam Warren in a split-squad game in Tampa. They're home in the afternoon against the Twins, but starters aren't listed.
