Gausman vs. Cahill tonight in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. - Second baseman Jonathan Schoop has reported to Triple-A Norfolk to continue his injury rehab assignment and he's batting second for tonight's game. The Tides are home against Louisville.

Schoop went 0-for-2 with a strikeout last night at Double-Bowie and a rain delay removed him from the game. The forecast prompted the Orioles to send Schoop to Norfolk.

The Orioles intend to activate Schoop from the 10-day disabled list before Tuesday night's game against the Royals at Camden Yards. They could option infielder Engelb Vielma to the Tides to make room for him on the 25-man roster, with Jace Peterson serving in a utility role.

Schoop has joined older brother Sharlon, who's playing third base tonight.

Meanwhile, the Orioles are facing another reverse-splits pitcher tonight in Athletics right-hander Trevor Cahill. At least, the 2018 version.

Cahill has held left-handers to a .111 average this season, but right-handers are batting .278. However, left-handers are hitting .264 during his career and right-handers are hitting .246.

What's different besides the numbers?

Cahill's making only his fourth start of the season after the Athletics recalled him from Triple-A Nashville on April 17, when his debut included seven scoreless innings against the White Sox. He signed as a free agent on March 19.

Cahill is 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA and 0.923 WHIP in four career starts against the Orioles - none since 2010 - with seven runs and 20 hits allowed in 26 innings. He's walked four batters and surrendered only one home run, to Garrett Atkins in a 6-1 win at Camden Yards.

Chris Davis is 3-for-16 with a home run and six strikeouts against Cahill. Pedro Álvarez is 2-for-11 with a home run and seven strikeouts. Adam Jones is 1-for-11 with a double and three strikeouts. Mark Trumbo is 1-for-10 with four strikeouts.

Danny Valencia is 3-for-6 with a home run. He's probably at third base again tonight.

Davis has driven in a run in three straight games while going 4-for-11 and increasing his average from .165 to .186. It's a slow climb, but he's moving in the right direction.

So is Kevin Gausman, whose ERA is down to 4.15 in six starts. He's still working to control his pitch count, reaching 106 in 5 2/3 innings in his last outing after throwing 107 over eight innings in the previous start.

Gausman is 1-2 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.412 WHIP in three career starts against the Athletics, with eight runs and 19 hits allowed over 17 innings. He's walked five batters and struck out 18. Both losses have come in Oakland, where he's permitted seven runs and 15 hits in 10 innings.

Matt Joyce is 2-for-12 lifetime against Gausman. Players on the current roster are 4-for-31.
