Lending a hand to Bell

The education of Josh Bell continues. He's learning on the job now in the Major Leagues, while at the same time, trying to impress Buck Showalter enough to play himself into a spot in the Orioles future. All of this with just 81 Triple-A games under his belt. Bell went 0 for 4 last night. After producing five hits in his first 19 big league at bats, now he is just two for his last 19 trips. For sure, that's way too small a sample size to form any real opinion about his shot to be the O's third baseman next year. Some of Bell's teammates can probably relate to being the rookie trying to find his way at the Major League level. And they have passed along a tip or two for Bell. "Luke (Scott) was watching some of my at bats and talking to me about what they were doing to me yesterday. Just watching the video, a lot of times you can't really feel it, but you see it on the video. That is a big thing different from Triple-A, there is so much video. "Talking to Jake Fox and other guys about what they think about different situations and how they dealt with things when they came up. Just things like that." Bell is batting .184-0-3 over 11 games. Bell is aware his defense is a part of his evaluation, as Buck Showalter might say, as well. Some of his throws from third have been erratic, but he remains confident in the accuracy of his arm. "I don't think it's something I have to improve, it's something I know I can do. It's a lot different from practice, in the game. When there is a base runner and situations on the line. It's about being comfortable and letting your talent play out. I believe I have the talent to do it, it's just more mental with me." From the minors: Frederick Keys third baseman, Billy Rowell, has not played the last three days due to a strained oblique muscle. Rowell is not starting tonight at Winson-Salem, but the injury is considered somewhat minor and he is listed as day-to-day and should return soon. He is batting .258-9-43 over 89 Frederick games. LHP Will Startup has moved from Aberdeen to Delmarva and RHP Jesse Rasner was transferred to Aberdeen. Startup, originally drafted by the Braves in 2005, was signed by the Orioles as a free agent in 2010. He posted a 1-0 record with a 2.13 ERA in 14 appearances for the Ironbirds. The 26-year old has three years experience at the Triple-A level. In 2006, he went 5-2 with a 3.43 ERA for the Gwinett Braves (AAA). In 2007, he posted a 3-2 mark with a 2.19 ERA in 43 outings for the G-Braves.
