Martinez lays out plan for suspended game and nightcap

The resumed game from Tuesday's suspended contest is scheduled to begin at 5:05 p.m. ET today. The Nationals and the Yankees were tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. After a one-plus hour weather delay, the game was suspended.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon and Matt Adams are scheduled due up for the Nationals.

Nationals manager Davey Martinez will have to make a decision with his bullpen when the top of the seventh rolls around. Left-hander Gio Gonzalez went five innings.

Reliever Wander Suero completed the sixth inning. Martinez could attempt to get one more inning out of Suero in the seventh inning later today. May 4 was the last time Suero was credited with more than one frame, going 1 2/3 innings against Philadephia. He also tossed 25 pitches the next day, May 5, against the Phillies.

Martinez said during Tuesday's pregame that Suero, Carlos Torres and Trevor Gott were the freshest relievers available in his bullpen. So if the Nats can take the lead in the suspended game, he will need to get nine outs to finish the game.

"We have Suero, we have Torres," Martinez said early Tuesday. "And then we could actually mix and match. Gott's fresh. We got a few guys that could actually give us a couple of innings."

Weather permitting, the originally scheduled game will follow with right-hander Max Scherzer (7-1, 1.69 ERA) facing left-hander CC Sabathia (2-0, 2.23).

Because Tuesday's game is considered an official game by Major League Baseball, only those with tickets to Wednesday's game will be admitted to the resumption of Tuesday's game at 5:05 p.m.

"We thought it was going to rain and we were just trying to stay ahead.," Martinez said last night after the suspension of the game. "And then we tried to score. We pinch-hit for Gio to see if we could maybe score a run before the rain came. Didn't happen so we resume (Wednesday), play (Wednesday)."

"The second game we will have a 26th man, but I think we'll be OK to finish the game."

Right-hander Austin Voth is the most viable candidate to be recalled as the 26th man for Wednesday night. Voth has allowed 12 runs in his last two games, but was called up to the Nationals for the first time in his career April 29 to protect Gonzalez. He did not get into that game and was optioned back to Syracuse. He last pitched for the Chiefs May 11.

Reliever Austin L. Adams is also on the 40-man, as is right-hander Erick Fedde. Adams has tossed three scoreless outings after being sent back to Syracuse in late April. Fedde has also struggled his last two starts, giving up a combined 10 earned runs.

Left-hander Matt Grace is still designated on a rehab assignment and the Nats' would prefer to bring him back for good when he is ready, not just as an emergency pitcher for a second game.
