Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz is scheduled to start Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Jeremy Guthrie will start Game 1.
Matusz hasn't pitched since allowing five runs and five hits in 1 1/3 innings in a Sept. 5 game at Yankee Stadium. He's 1-7 with a 9.84 ERA in 43 innings, with 68 hits, 19 walks, 33 strikeouts and a 2.02 WHIP. He's allowed five earned runs or more in his last six starts, and six earned runs or more in four of six.
Matusz has been working with pitching coach Rick Adair while waiting for his next chance.
Manager Buck Showalter confirmed that he's leaning toward using Matusz on Monday, though he added, "There are still a couple moving parts I want to see."
Matusz is 2-0 with a 2.43 ERA in five career starts against the Red Sox. He's 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three starts at Fenway Park, with four runs allowed and 16 strikeouts in 18 innings.
Also, Showalter still hasn't closed the door on giving Jim Johnson a start before the season ends on Sept. 28.
Adam Jones isn't in tonight's lineup, but he might try to talk his way into it. He had an MRI on his right thumb at 2:30 p.m. and Showalter will meet with him once he returns to Camden Yards.
Showalter said he'll try to avoid using Kevin Gregg tonight after the right-hander threw 43 pitches last night. Gregg allowed three runs (two earned) before getting the final out in the ninth inning in the Orioles' 8-3 victory over the Angels.
