Mets jump on top early on a soggy Thursday (Mets win 7-4)

On a soggy field and a misty Thursday, it did not take long for the Mets to get on the board in Game 1 of a split doubleheader. Facing Nationals starter Blake Treinen, the Mets connected on three singles in the first inning. blake-treinen-sidebar.pngCurtis Granderson's single to right field plated Wilmer Flores and the Mets lead 1-0. In the bottom of the first, the Nationals went 1-2-3 against Dillon Gee. The Mets lead 1-0 heading to top of the second. Update: In the third inning following a Danny Espinosa leadoff single, Treinen was called out on what was at first a 1-6-3 double play. Nationals manager Matt Williams challenged the ruling that Treinen was out at first base. The call was overturned on video review and Treinen was safe on a fielder's choice. The delay took 1 minute, 56 seconds. The Nationals did not score in the inning. After three innings, the Mets lead 1-0. Update II: Ryan Zimmerman singled in the fourth and scored on a sac fly to center by Ian Desmond, to even the game at 1-1. Zimmerman was taking it easy rounding the bases and even on the sac fly from third, but made it home unscathed. Update III: Treinen just did not have his best stuff today, and exited in the fifth after three straight base hits by the Mets. Daniel Murphy's RBI double made it 2-1 Mets. Treinen finished 4 1/3 innings, allowed eight hits, four earned runs, walked one and struck out one. He tossed 64 pitches, 42 for strikes. Xavier Cedeno surrendered a two-run single to Granderson and the Mets extended their lead to 4-1. Granderson has two hits and three RBIs so far on the day. Update IV: The Nationals respond with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. Pinch-hitter Nate Schierholtz with an RBI single and Michael A. Taylor added a two-run single to erase the Mets' advantage. The clubs combined for six runs and 10 hits in the fifth inning. Update V: We're still tied at the end of seven innings. After Cedeno, Jerry Blevins pitched two scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out five. In Blevins has struck out 10 in his last four appearances, spanning 4 1/3 innings. Tyler Clippard is on to start the eighth inning. Zimmerman is also done after playing seven innings in the field. Harper moved over to left and Steven Souza Jr. takes over in right. Update VI: With Clippard on the mound in the eighth, Ruben Tejada was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Two outs later, pinch-runner Eric Young Jr. scored on a Matt den Dekker's single. The Mets extended their lead to 6-4 on catcher Wilmer Flores' infield single. Williams then pulled Clippard in favor of Ryan Mattheus, who retired Murphy on one pitch. Clippard pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed two hits and two earned runs. Update VII: With one out in the ninth, Mettheus walked Granderson. Niewenhuis then doubled and Tejada singled to score a run. Update IX: The Nats were unable to comeback in the ninth and fell to the Mets 7-4. The magic number to clinch home-field advantage remains at two. Clippard was charged with the loss and is now 7-4. Game 2 is set to begin around 7:05 p.m.
