The tarp is on the field and a light rain is falling at Camden Yards. However, the Orioles expect to play tonight.
No batting practice for the Yankees, who are on the field to play catch. If it makes them feel any better, the Orioles also have to hit indoors.
The Orioles seem to be averaging a roster move per day to make up for lost time.
They returned Mike Wright to the 25-man roster today while placing Darren O'Day on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. Wright never left Baltimore and he's allowed to be recalled because he's replacing an injured player.
Manager Buck Showalter said O'Day will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection in his leg to speed up the healing process. He's "cautiously optimistic" that O'Day will be ready after 15 days.
"I hope so," Showalter said. "Because it's Mike Wright and not somebody else, you can't backdate the DL. It's a rule. You lose one day there, but we felt like it would be 15. We hope to get him back in 15. We'll see. His arm feels great."
The hamstring already had been barking before O'Day suffered a more serious injury Wednesday night while covering first base. He gave up his fifth home run of the season to Chris Young leading off the inning, matching his 2015 total, and raced to the bag to take Chris Davis' throw and retire Ryan Hanigan.
A walk, single and strikeout followed before Zach Britton replaced him.
"He felt it a little bit, but he really, covering first base the other night, it grabbed on him and it wasn't better the next day," Showalter said.
O'Day is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA, two saves and 25 strikeouts in 20 innings over 22 appearances. He signed a four-year, $31 million contract with the Orioles in December after the Nationals and Dodgers made aggressive bids.
Showalter hasn't decided whether Wright will rejoin the rotation or work out of the bullpen, but the Orioles need a starter Monday night against the Royals at Camden Yards. Wright had been optioned yesterday following another poor start on Wednesday, when he allowed six runs in 2 2/3 innings. He's 2-3 with a 5.88 ERA in 10 games (nine starts).
"That hasn't been decided yet," Showalter said. "Obviously, he can't pitch out of the bullpen tonight with the number of pitches, but we're OK down there tonight. We'll see what Monday brings. Trying to get through Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It will be kind of a moving target for a couple of days."
The Orioles chose Wright among five candidates, including left-hander Ashur Tolliver, who also could have been recalled under 10 days. Tolliver has been activated on Triple-A Norfolk's roster today.
Yovani Gallardo will start for Norfolk Tuesday in a noon game before most likely coming off the disabled list. There weren't many choices among the affiliates unless Gallardo wanted to pitch in West Virginia or Portland, Maine.
"He said, 'I'll go to Norfolk,'" Showalter said.
Suiting up with the Tides allows Gallardo to face a higher level of competition after he tossed three innings yesterday at Single-A Frederick.
"He feels good. It's a good day today," Showalter said. "He threw well last night. A lot of ground balls. Some of which worked their way into the outfield."
Showalter said the reports on Wandy Rodriguez are "OK" at extended spring training as the veteran left-hander builds up his pitch count. As I've written, Rodriguez must give his approval to be assigned to a minor league affiliate. Otherwise, he can opt out of his deal.
Norfolk left-hander Andy Oliver opted out of his contract. He had a 2.08 ERA in 13 games (four starts), but left-handers were hitting .333 against him.
The 30th annual OriolesREACH Food and Funds Drive, presented by MASN and WJZ-TV, will take place during all three games of this series. The drive benefits the Maryland Food Bank.
Non-perishable food items and monetary donations will be collected at every entrance of Camden Yards until the end of the second inning.
According to the Maryland Food Bank, items most needed at this time are peanut butter, canned chicken, canned tuna, oatmeal, breakfast cereals and canned fruits and vegetables.
The OriolesREACH Food and Funds Drive benefits soup kitchens, food pantries, and emergency shelters throughout Maryland. Last year's drive resulted in the collection of nearly 7,000 pounds of food and raised more than $37,000 for the Maryland Food Bank. It's raised more than $91,000 and collected nearly 25,000 pounds of food over the last three years.
