Notes on Aceves, Gonzalez, Bundy, Lough, more (Hendriks claimed, plus gallery)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Pitcher Alfredo Aceves left camp today and is flying home to Mexico to obtain his work visa. The Orioles think Aceves could return in less than a week. Manager Buck Showalter estimated five or six days. "The problem is, he has a meeting in Mexico tomorrow and they can't see him again until Monday. And then there's a period where they have to approve it," Showalter said. "In my mind, I'm thinking a week, but they're telling me four or five days. I think it will probably be somewhere in that five-to-six day range." The club isn't concerned about his absence, since he pitched in winter ball and probably would need to be scaled back. "I think he'll be fine," Showalter said. "It may not be a bad thing at all. You can tell he's pretty crisp right now. I was in the batters' box today doing a drill and he threw the ball to the plate. Hope he didn't have an Orioles-Red Sox flashback there." Orioles pitchers will throw live batting practice on Saturday, with hitters no longer tracking. They can take some cuts. Miguel Gonzalez said he felt "great, wonderful" following his 35-pitch bullpen session. He will throw batting practice on Monday. "I'm 100 percent, good to go," said Gonzalez, who had to stop working out last Saturday because of back spasms. If Liam Hendriks clears waivers later today, the Orioles will send him to the minor league camp at Twin Lakes Park. Update: The Blue Jays have claimed Hendriks off waivers. The Orioles designated him for assignment on Wednesday to make room for Ubaldo Jimenez on the 40-man roster. Dylan Bundy threw from 150 feet again today, as I mentioned in my last entry. He played catch with Brady Anderson in left field on Field 2. "That went real well," Showalter said. "It's going as well as you could hope for." Showalter indicated that David Lough, expected to be the regular left fielder this season, could evolve into a leadoff hitter. "He's got a chance to fit that role," Showalter said. "We'll see how that develops, especially if Nick (Markakis) presents himself as a little different look player." Pitchers will undergo biomechanical testing on Monday. "The testing has gotten better each year, the way they go about it," Showalter said. "Going out there and throwing in your underwear. Not for the weak of body." Instructors Gary Kendall, Blaine Beatty and Butch Davis headed over to the minor league camp. Kendall will run the show.
