One year ago today (and Worrell clears waivers)

On this date in 2010, the Orioles traded third baseman Miguel Tejada to the San Diego Padres and hired Buck Showalter as their third manager of the season. They could make a trade this weekend, but they won't be changing managers. The Orioles acquired right-hander Wynn Pelzer from the Padres. I don't believe you could view that deal as a Wynn-win. Tejada batted .268 with eight homers, 32 RBIs and a .730 OPS in 59 games with the Padres. He signed with the Giants over the winter and is batting .242 with 16 doubles, four homers, 26 RBIs and a .609 OPS in 82 games. The Giants have used Tejada at third base in 42 games (two errors), at shortstop in 37 (eight errors) and at second base in four (no errors.) Pelzer went 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 10 games with Double-A Bowie last season, with 24 hits, seven walks and 20 strikeouts in 20 innings. Opponents batted .296 against him. This season, he's 4-7 with a 4.35 ERA in 25 games (10 starts) with the Baysox, with 75 hits, 44 walks and 62 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings. So far, he isn't viewed as a nugget. We'll see what happens over the winter. The Orioles went 34-23 under Showalter in 2010, but they're 41-60 and a season-worst 19 games below .500 going into tonight's series-opener in New York. They're 22 games out of first place and 10 behind the fourth-place Blue Jays. The Orioles are 26-28 at home, 15-32 on the road. Showalter's had a full year to evaluate the talent in the organization, though he didn't manage his first game until Aug. 2. We'll start on the day that he was hired. He keeps a magnetic board in his office with the names of all the players on the 40-man roster and in the upper levels of the farm system. My guess is we'll see major changes to that first list once the Orioles conclude their 14th straight losing season - barring a dramatic turnaround over the last two months. NOTE: This just in: Reliever Mark Worrell cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk. The 40-man roster is down to 39.
