The Orioles made another change to their pitching staff this afternoon in Kansas City, optioning Kevin Gausman to Triple-A Norfolk and recalling Evan Meek.
Gausman started yesterday against the Tigers and retired the first seven batters he faced before allowing five runs and six hits in four innings with two walks, two strikeouts and a wild pitch. He threw 87 pitches, 10 more than his highest total with Norfolk.
Gausman, 23, went 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA in six starts for the Tides before being recalled. The Orioles no longer need the extra starter with Chris Tillman taking the mound on Friday and Bud Norris avoiding a suspension.
Meek, 31, went 0-1 with a 6.94 ERA in 12 appearances with the Orioles before they optioned him following Game 2 of a May 1 doubleheader. He allowed four runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings at Norfolk, with one walk and five strikeouts.
Meek didn't permit a run in his first nine appearances with the Orioles before giving up nine runs and 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings over his last four games.
