Strasburg delivers RBI double (Nats fall 7-3, Martinez ejected)

The Nationals were not scheduled to play Monday so Tuesday's series opener against the San Francisco Giants was their annual opportunity to honor the legacy of Jackie Robinson on the field by wearing No. 42 jerseys and socks on Jackie Robinson Day.

Left-hander Tony Sipp said Jackie Robinson Day holds a special place in his heart and every time he goes out to play baseball.

"Today is always special for me because obviously the things that Jackie Robinsons sacrificed back then while he was playing," Sipp said. "Being the first, I don't know if I would've checked that box off to want to be the first guy and live under a microscope. But to see the way he did it and the way he lived on and off the field, the way I go about my business every day, it's a tribute to him because he sacrificed a lot for me to come here and play a baseball game and play the game for a living.

"He's definitely special to me. My tribute to him is the career that I've had. Come to the field and appreciate the job that we've been given, the chance that we've been given. He's a big part of that."

Update: Wilmer Difo doubled with one out in the bottom of the second off of Giants right-hander Dereck Rodríguez. Stephen Strasburg followed with an opposite-field double to the right-center field wall that scored Difo for a 1-0 lead.

Strasburg has allowed a third-inning double to Kevin Pillar, but the Giants did not score. Strasburg has recorded four strikeouts through three frames.

Mid-third, the Nats lead the Giants 1-0.

Update II: Strasburg allowed two home runs in the fifth. Evan Longoria led off with a solo homer to right field, his second round-tripper of the season. On batter later, Steven Duggar cranked a solo shot into the Giants bullpen, also his second home run of the season.

Mid-fifth and the Giants lead the Nats 3-1.

Update III: Manager Davey Martinez was tossed for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Tony Randazzo to end the fifth. Brian Dozier and Anthony Rendon had struck out to end the inning on called third strikes. Randazzo had made four called third strike calls so far against the Nats. It was Martinez's second career ejection.

Brandon Belt hit the Giants' third homer of the game, a solo shot over the right field wall with one out in the sixth.

Mid-sixth, the Giants lead the Nats 4-1.

Update IV: Strasburg lasted six innings, allowing four runs, including three homers, on six hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches, 68 for strikes.

End sixth, the Giants lead 4-1.

Update V: In the top of seventh, relievers Austen Williams and Matt Grace could not slow down the Giants. Gerardo Parra with a run-scoring double and Joe Panik added an RBI single. The Giants lead 6-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Matt Adams slammed a leadoff solo shot, his first homer of the season. The Giants lead 6-2. That was Adams' 10th career pinch-hit home run.

Rendon later tacked on another run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Update VI: In the eighth, Trevor Rosenthal hit Belt with a pitch and walked Brandon Crawford. But he settled down to only allow a bloop single and was able to record three outs.

Mid-eighth, the Giants lead the Nats 7-3.

Update VII: The Nats produced a walk by pinch-hitter Michael A. Taylor on the ninth, but the Giants retired the side.

Final score: Giants 7, Nats 3.
