Another day at Camden Yards brings another batch of news.
The Orioles are purchasing infielder Steve Tolleson's contract from Triple-A Norfolk and will announce the corresponding roster move once the reliever is told that he's being optioned. Manager Buck Showalter will speak to him during batting practice.
Tolleson, who will wear No. 6, is expected to arrive at Camden Yards about an hour before the first pitch.
This move is being made because Endy Chavez continues to be bothered by a sore oblique muscle, which explains Ryan Flaherty's start in left field tonight.
Also, Jason Hammel is expected to be scratched from tomorrow night's start after having an MRI on his right knee a few days ago. The knee has been bothering him the last few starts, requiring treatment to alleviate the swelling.
For now, Hammel isn't expected to go on the disabled list, but the Orioles will need a spot starter tomorrow night. Tommy Hunter can only return if Chavez goes on the DL, since he hasn't been in the minors for the minimum 10 days. However, Hunter would be working on short rest and would need bullpen help.
Brad Bergesen is scheduled to start tomorrow for the Tides, so he becomes a candidate. Chris Tillman threw six innings on Sunday, so he'd be working on short rest. Both pitchers are on the 40-man roster.
The Orioles also need a starter for Friday, and the initial plan was to purchase Dana Eveland's contract.
The Orioles are expected to transfer catcher Taylor Teagarden to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Tolleson.
Update: The Orioles optioned left-hander Zach Phillips, who served up Josh Hamilton's third home run last night.
Tolleson is batting .265/.357/.361 with five doubles, one homer, 11 RBIs and six errors in 26 games. He was supposed to start at shortstop this afternoon, but was pulled from the lineup and replaced by Blake Davis.
Tolleson is a utility infielder, but he also can play in the outfield.
The Orioles did, indeed, transfer Teagarden to the 60-day DL.
