OAKLAND - It was not hard to analyze this loss. There were no key throwing errors, late leads lost or controversial video reviews. Orioles pitching just got blasted.
The Oakland A's scored 10 runs in the last of the sixth on eight hits and hit three homers that inning on their way to a 16-2 romp over the Orioles.
Three O's pitchers were hit hard that inning, which began with the A's leading 4-2 and the Orioles still very much in this game. But Robbie Grossman's two-run homer off starter Gabriel Ynoa made it 6-2, and the A's were just getting started. Paul Fry faced five batters and four reached, one on shortstop Richie Martin's error. Dan Straily came on and gave up three-run homers to Khris Davis and Stephen Piscotty.
Ynoa took the loss, falling to 0-4 with a 5.65 ERA, allowing seven hits and six runs with three homers in 5 1/3 innings. Fry was charged with four runs (one earned) over 1/3 of an inning. Straily went 2 1/3 and gave up six runs and three homers, the last coming when pinch-hitter Chad Pinder took him deep for a two-run shot in the seventh. His ERA is 9.82 and for the season and he has allowed 22 homers in 47 2/3 innings.
The Orioles have lost seven in a row to tie their season-high losing streak, first set May 18-24. At 21-52, they have lost 11 of 13, 15 of 19 and 30 of their past 38 games.
Beau Taylor's first major league homer in the third, a solo shot, and Ramón Laureano's three-run homer in the fourth made it 4-0 Oakland. The O's got two back in the fifth on Jonathan Villar's eighth home run. Keon Broxton singled and later scored on an error.
The Orioles were back in the game. But not for long.
The Orioles have clinched another series loss, and they are 0-15-1 in series play since April 22-24. They have now lost nine straight road series.
The 16 runs the Orioles allowed tied a season high by a Baltimore opponent. The Twins also scored 16 runs, on April 20. The 10-run inning was the biggest against the Orioles this year.
Oakland is now 5-1 against the Orioles, scoring 54 runs and hitting 20 home runs. In their last four games versus the Orioles, Oakland has homered 16 times.
This was the Orioles' worst loss of the year, a 14-run decision. It tops the 15-3 loss at Oriole Park against the Yankees on April 7.
Manager Brandon Hyde on the loss: "I thought it was a major league baseball game through five innings. A 4-2 game and it was pitching OK. It was 6-2 in the sixth, and then just really bad baseball after that. You know, pretty embarrassing again. With a bullpen day tomorrow, we're in a tough spot. Yeah, hard to watch."
Hyde with more on the loss: "That's really difficult to watch. We just have had way too many of those type of games this year. And I'm just looking forward to the day when we've got waves of arms coming through here that are impact guys that can get people out. Right now, we don't have enough of them."
Fry on his tough night: "I mean, it's really tough. It comes down to attacking hitters and getting ahead. I put myself in a bad spot there. Getting ahead is No. 1, and I fell behind almost every hitter. Had to throw pitches that were hittable pitches, and that's where I got in trouble."
