In the Spirit of the Game
| | Comments (1)

What do Entertainment Tonight host Mary Hart, actors Don Johnson and Tim Allen and legendary broadcaster Larry King have in common with Nationals GM Jim Bowden?

They all were present last Saturday night in Century City, CA for the 5th Annual Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation In the Spirit of the Game dinner and auction.

Also spotted at the event were Nationals assistant GM Bob Boone and advance scout Wade Taylor. The goal of the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation is to help scouts who have fallen on hard times.

The annual dinner gives the foundation an opportunity to recognize many of the unsung heroes in the game in addition to acknowledging many baseball greats.

All in the Family…
Each year the Ray Boone Family Award honors a baseball family. This year Bob Boone presented the award which is named after his father to the Buddy Bell Family.

Like the Boones, the Bell family has generations of baseball players in it. Gus was an outfielder for the Pirates, Reds, Mets and Milwaukee Braves. Buddy played 18 seasons and also managed in the big leagues. David Bell played for the Phillies and Brewers and is currently a free agent.

Mike Bell played a year of major league baseball for the Reds and Rick Bell played professional baseball also.

Faces in the Crowd…
Rod Carew presented Tony Gwynn with the Player Lifetime Achievement Award. He will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this summer. Commissioner Bud Selig was on hand to give Braves Chairman Bill Bartholomay the Executive Leadership Award.

Dave Winfield was honored as a Scout’s Dream, an award for Outstanding Achievement in baseball history…

Swing into Spring…
Naturally the Nats are eager to kick off the 2008 grapefruit league season. Pitchers and catchers report to camp on February 16th… While the team is shaping up nicely with some new faces there is still the hope of landing a fill in free agent pitcher.

Great for Gifford!!!
The Nats announced this week they’re going to be serving Gifford ice cream at the new ballpark… This is GREAT news for fans if you’re like me and love creamy, delicious ice cream.

Gifford will debut its “Dinger”, a vanilla ice cream and chocolate cookie sandwich, on opening night. A portion of the sale of each sandwich will be donated to the Nationals Dream Foundation.
