Here we go...Let's count it down 2-3-1
Nobody can say the Orioles did not have a chance to win yesterday in Tampa. Sure, the Rays rookie pitcher Jeff Niemann pitched very well in his MLB debut, but not so well the O's couldn't get on base.
They did---12 times to be exact. 9 of those 12-base runners, however, never made it home. It's impossible to win when you leave 9-men on the bags.
Before yesterday's 6-2 loss, manager Dave Trembley said his team has to hit better with runners in scoring position. The Birds failed to do that. In fact, over the past 2-losses the Orioles have just 5-RBI as a team; 2 of which were solo home runs, so they don't really count as hitting with runners in scoring position.
The Birds have 3-tough series coming up this week starting today with the Bluejays, then the White Sox, then the Yankees. All three teams will score a lot of runs. The Birds will need to step up the situational hitting and give their starting pitchers some run support in order to win.
Funny Happenings: The Tampa Bay Rays do a lot of promotional stuff throughout the game to draw fans to the park. They have a "Rays Hostess" who pops up on the video screen to ask trivia questions and give away prizes to the fans in between innings.
As you can imagine, these young women are more similar to cheerleaders than Barbara Walters so maybe what happened next makes sense. As the hostess was playing a game with a fan she said, "Here we go on three...2-3-1." True story.
I wonder if she has been demoted to "top of the dugout dancer" today. Yes---they have those too. The whole scene really made me appreciate The Yard.
