Andy MacPhail says
Andy MacPhail told MASNsports.com today that the player to be named later in the Chad Bradford trade to Tampa will not be known until this off-season.
"I would not get fans expectations to the level that this is someone you will see in the big leagues in the short term, it's more likely to be someone you see down the road," MacPhail said.
"I wouldn't be looking for Longoria or anyone like that," he said. "It's more likely to be a younger player without much experience."
He said the O's traded from an area where they have some depth in the organization in right-handed relief.
MacPhail was asked if there might be more August deals coming.
"I think your next spike of deals wiill come at the end of the month. By now the clubs know who has cleared (waivers). Then you'll deal with a finite group of players that have cleared."
MacPhail was asked if he remains confident the club will sign first-round pick Brian Matusz with one week to the deadline for doing so.
"I hope so. Probably not as confident as we were initially now that it's August 8th. I'm disappointed that he's not out there by now. We had reasons to expect that we wouldn't be waiting this long. I think it's unfortunate. But it is what it is. In the event we don't sign him, which we hope will not be the case, but if that is the case, you have the 5th pick next year. You are not being penalized, you are being deferred."

Look this kids agent isn't stupid he knows the orioles are in desperate shape as far as starting pitching goes.Like andy said the orioles had reasons to expect this kid to sign and not be a problem. I wouldn't let this kid tie this organization up in knots , either sign or go play sandlot ball for a year, just as simple as that. Weiters was a completley different case and we can't have all these kids holding us hostage.
when you say a player to be named later,do you know who that player is or do you have a pool of players or what?
Ron:they always agree to a list the team can choose from. As for Matusz, 7 of the top 10 picks haven't signed because of the demands of A Crow at #9. Nobody wants to sign and then see him get the Nats to cave.
Please somebody tell me why the red sox couldn't use a guy like aubrey huff. They were trying to get giles on a waiver deal and he turned it down. Lowell is hurting , ortiz is questionable and huff could play first or 3rd and give them a great bat in august and september . Please tell me what i am missing with some of these teams.
what are your predictions for the 09 season in terms of trades and free agents.
