Trade made
Orioles reliever Chad Bradford has been assigned to the Tampa Bay Rays, via a waiver claim. In exchange, the Orioles will receive a player to be named later.
That's how much times have changed in the AL East. The Rays are acquiring a veteran reliever for the stretch drive.

Is there ever any point to acquiring a player to be named? Are they ever anything other than a minor league filler? Is this just a salary dump or actually part of the rebuilding?
Haha! Well we just lost our "effective" reliever. Why couldn't it have been Walker?
Who do you think we will receive, Roch?
This is just ridiculous. I thought Bradford and other players wouldn't be susceptible to waivers. I guess not.
Roch any idea on the player to be named? Are you thinking it will be a list of guys the front office can choose from? Wow and are you ever right about the change of the times.. hopefully we can follow suit.

Trying to find out as we speak. Or as we type. - Roch
Yes, last year the PTBNL from the Cubs was Jake Renshaw who is actually a decent prospect. But the 3.5 million saved next year from dumping Bradford is also nice.
Also, our BP was going to be very crowded next year with Baez and Ray coming back so it was definitely a good move getting rid of Bradford, despite what the quality of the PTBNL will be. Hopefully someone will give us a similar deal for Walker.
Wasn't Tito Landrum the “player to be named later” in his own trade to the Orioles in 1983, returning him to St. Louis before the ’84 season?
I was hoping they would hang on to Bradford. How much of this seasons and next season's salary do the Orioles have to pay?
Do the O's have any say in selecting the player to be named later or do they have to accept whoever Tampa offers?
Thanks Chad! I'm gonna miss that guy. We have to find ourselves another submariner. Who has Frohwirth's phone number?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andy Mitchell at Triple-A Norfolk is a submariner. As for whether the Orioles have a choice in which player they get...I certainly believe that's the case. Would stink if Tampa Bay said, 'Here you go, take this guy,' and he's a 40-year-old catcher hitting .069 at Double-A. - Roch
Another question:
If it's a player the Orioles can get, make sure they can get a player that's even better than Bradford. That means getting a player that can actually contribute to the rebuilding process - a young, talented player. Such as a Shortstop or third base. Or even a pitcher.
I guess we are just waiting for Upton to clear waivers so they can announce him as the player to be named in this deal?
Serious question. Do we have a clear picture of MASN corporate structure/ownership and whether income derived by MASN is available to the Orioles for player development or salaries either as a regular contribution to the budget or as a supplement over the budget? Do we know how the finances work if the Orioles wanted to pay Texeira a 10 year 200M contract? Does it have to fit into the revenues generated by the team solely? Has Angelos ever dipped into his personal pocket to go over budget for a player? Or for the expansion of scouting, farm system etc? I guess what I am asking is whether in time we can actually compete on a level or near level playing field with the teams drawing income from regional cable networks. On a related but separate issue, what do you think the real market for Texeira will end up being this offseason?
Ben, it's a salary dump. O's are likely to get a C/C+ prospect back, meaning he'll be organizational depth with a chance to catch lightning in a bottle.
Generally in "to be named" trades there is a list of 3 to 4 players the Team can choose from.
I'm guessing this is more of a salary dump than anything. It's already been said the Orioles will have many relievers next year with Ray, etc. coming back.
Btw, Roch. Thanks for the update on the O's draft picks as far as who's signed/unsigned.
The cost for Teixeira is now down to 16.5 mil per year instead of 20!

I don't know how I feel about this. I pretty much figured that sooner or later Chad was going to go to be leaving...I just would have prefered to have some veteran stability out in the bullpen for our younger guys to learn from and mimic (okay, maybe not the delivery part).
I would think that with Chad being a piece that can actually HELP Tampa down the stretch this season that the Orioles FO wouldn't have let him go through waivers without at least agreeing, in part, with the Rays on a player (or players that would be acceptable) and that the "to be named later" part is just typical until everyone can be notified and things can be signed, etc.
Besides, Peter Angelos didn't want to trade or do any business within the division, right? Remember that?
So, what's with the trade to the Rays?
Just pointing this out is all. I'm not criticizing it, but just wondering.
Maybe they are getting Tim Beckham back and need to name him later because he was just drafted and you can't trade a player within a year of drafting them. YEAH RIGHT!!!
But honestly I hope the O's get something nice from the TB farm system, which is absolutely stocked, because Bradford is a very good reliever.
Nothing says a player to be named later has to be a stiff. It's not going to be David Price or Tim Beckham, but Tampa has lots of talent in the minors, including a bevy of shortstops--Ben Zobrist (now in the majors) and Reid Brignac (AAA). If we get a prospect who has a chance to make it in the bigs, there is nothing ridiculous about this trade. Chad Brad did a good job, but if we can get something for our older guys we absolutely should do it.
There were some rumors of Oriole interest in Reid Brignac as a shortstop solution, but he is one of the Rays' top ten prospects so he seems like too much to give for Chad Bradford. Then again, some are unsure Brignac will ever make it and the Rays did draft a SS with the #1 overall pick this year. It's more likely to be mid-level pitching.
I'm not too happy with this trade unless the player to be named is young and fills a hole. Most of the time PTBNL's are AAAA players you never hear who promptly disappear. Anyone remember Adam Stern? Yea, didnt think so....
I believe Tito Landrum was traded for Floyd Rayford (Sugarbear) in one trade and then the two players were traded back to the same teams in separate trades. I will never forget Tito's HR in the ALCS off of Britt Burns in the 10th inning of a 0-0 tie.
Could Gomes AND Baldelli be a possibility?
Word leaking out of the warehouse is that the Player to Be Named is actually Nikoloz Tskitishvili. Either him, or some guy with a sneaky-fast curve named Lord Voldemort...
Remember when Tampa Bay waiver claims were the first ones? Now, a lot of clubs must have passed to get to the Rays.
We knew the clock was ticking on Bradford.
The McPhail front office hasn't let us down with trades yet, so I'm not too concerned with the PTBNL.
If one team in baseball has enough young prospects to make even minor trades look appealing, it's Tampa Bay.
My concern is that we'll get a player that's not worth putting on the 40 man roster.
Reid Brigniac is off limits I've heard, they wouldn't give him up for Jason Bay, they certainly won't for Chadwick.

Player To Be Named Later
A transaction including a player to be named later must be completed within six months. The player may not be an active Major Leaguer player during the interval between the trade and the date the player is named. As a result, most players to be named later are minor leaguers.
At the time of a trade, clubs sometimes agree on a list of players from which the player to be named will be selected. They also may agree on an amount of money to be exchanged in lieu of a player.
Clubs may include a player to be named later in a trade if a player is not eligible to be traded. For example, once a draft pick signs a professional contract, he may not be traded until an entire year has elapsed (the Pete Incaviglia Rule). Additionally, a player on a minor-league reserve list may not be traded between November 20 and the Rule 5 draft in December, so trades during that window may include a PTBNL.
Does the PTBNL have to pass through waivers in order for us to get him? That could put a pretty low ceiling on the quality of the return.
Did a little digging and it appears that there are two rules on PTBNL trades: (1) they must be completed within six months, and (2) the player must change leagues. As a result of the second rule, most of the time the PTBNL is a minor leaguer (here the Rays couldn't send us someone on their active major-league roster). Apparently the following guys each were once a PTBNL, so it's not assured we're getting a stiff: Jeremy Bonderman, Scott Podsednik, Coco Crisp, Moisés Alou, Jason Schmidt, and David Ortiz.
Terpfan, yes if the player is on the 40-man roster he must make it through waivers.
Sometimes that is why it is a PTBNL, because once the season is over, you do not have to pass him through waivers.
So the possibilty exists that either we have a list of players to choose from, or McPhail has already picked a player but he is on the 40 man so must wait until the season ends to complete the deal.
SO can we officially start calling that minor NFL transaction "the other trade" of the day?
Well, he was great when you needed a potential double play but it was also difficult when there were three seeing eye ground balls in a row.So he was a specialist and in fact a luxury item that I don't think we can afford.Very seldom a K with the 78 mph fastball and 30% of the grounders make it to the outfield. As Trembley said, he would use him as a closer and this is because he does not give up the big inning but he can be nibbled to death.
I think it is a good move and perhaps the player to be named later is a position player...I would be interested to see the Devil Rays SS prospects aside from Beckham.
