Sad news about former Raven
| | Comments (19)

I'm absolutely floored by the news that former Ravens fullback Chuck Evans died yesterday of heart failure at age 41.

You never expect someone to die so young. I hung out with Evans for a few hours last month at Bay Cafe. It was a Sunday, and he happened to be standing next to me at the outdoor bar. I spotted him first, but didn't say anything, wanting to make absolutely sure it was Evans. I walked a few feet to throw away some trash, and as I returned to my spot, he playfully leaned into me and said, "I didn't know that was you!"

We did a shot together and cracked a few jokes. He had employees walking up to him constantly to exchange pleasantries. He was such a fun guy.

Evans played in the NFL for eight seasons, retiring in 2000. He was on the Vikings team in '98 that scored the most points (556) in a single season in NFL history. His best year statistically was his first with the Ravens in 1999, when he had 38 carries for 134 yards and 32 receptions for 235 yards and a touchdown.

Evans used to co-host with Anita Marks on MASN and ESPN Radio 1300. I worked with him a few times and always enjoyed his company. I can't believe he's gone.

I am in shock! I met Chuck when he joined the Ravens and his wife and I became friends. We would also see each other out, and developed a friendship because I did find him to be such a cool guy, easy to talk to, and always kept it real. I started calling him Sergeant Slaughter because of his military background, and his fun way of enforcing his beliefs, which wasn't a negative because he genuinely cared about people, and wanted the best for them. He was also a very intelligent man. Overall, he seemed like very healthy, so never in a million years would I think he would pass so young. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't read it for myself!! My condolences go out to his family and friends. This news has really reminded my husband and I that tomorrow isn't promised and to cherish each moment. It seemed just yesterday that he, his wife "Tope" and daughter Clark celebrated the xmas holidays with us. Gosh, we just saw him a few months ago at the "5 & 35 Reunion". I can only imagine how his family is feeling. My heart REALLY goes out to them! GOD BLESS! R.I.P. Chuck!

Every time Chuck and I would hang together he taught me the true meaning of friendship. Chuck was a man that was never selfish but you never had to guess what was on his mind because he will tell you. He will be truly missed.

My husband and myself were close friends of Chuck here in Baltimore. He was larger than life at times and was always laughing and joking around. He also was always willing to give a hand-Many heavy things he has helped us move around! His competitive nature is historic- he and my husband would play pool for HOURS in our basement- much "fake" money was won and lost down there. We are in shock- as is everyone. Use this as a lesson- tell everyone around you that you love them eachtime you talk. I hope his fans won't forget him- I know we will think of him daily. Way too young...

I knew and liked Chuck. He always had a good word and a smile. We talked about football, golf, anything.

There hasn't been enough information about Chuck's death. I heard that he was in Atlanta, was arrested for being late on or missing child support payments and had a heart attack in an Atlanta jail. Can anyone verify this? Missing child support payments isn't a capital offense. If the police precipitated this, someone needs to know.

Chuck was a college teammate of mine and taught me how important it was to work hard and be respectfull to coaches and teammates. He was a tough person on the field but easy to talk to off of it. He will be missed by many. RIP C Evans

Charles was a member of my football team at Clark Atlanta University. He was like a son to me. While we realize that life and death is in the hands of the almighty, my heart is heavy at this tremedous loss. My sympathy is extended to his family.

I met Chuck a few years back at the Bay Cafe. I sat down and had a beer with him and he was more than happy to talk football or any other subject that came to mind. No attitude at all---just a very down to earth guy.

Me and Chuck were best friends at Clark Atlanta University. Played football together. I thought about chuck all the time and was waiting for him to come to a homecoming game. This guy was a marine and loved pillow talk with young ladies when we were in college. This guy was a hell of a athlete. Could do a 2 1/2 flip off a diving board with precision. Chuck had a serious work ethic and would be up early in the morning on a drop of a dime ready for practice. Early morning practices sometimes dellusional from only one or two hours of sleep from the day before. We would make crazy comments to each other as we would run. "I am the Bionic Man" Or "I am Super man" and Chuck would say Nope " I AM JUST A MAN" LOL. Life is crazy! i am pissed that i will never get a chance to hang out with you again for old times sakes.
