Proefrock leaving organization
I just had it confirmed by a second person close to the situation that Scott Proefrock, the Orioles director of baseball administration, has been hired by the Philadelphia Phillies as an assistant general manager.
It should be noted that Proefrock isn't one of the "confirmers." I haven't heard back from him. But I'm told it's a done deal.
As I wrote earlier, look for the Phillies to announce the hiring tomorrow.
Proefrock joined the Orioles' front office on Oct. 25, 2005. His duties included interpreting the Major League Baseball rules and basic agreement with the players association, coordinating the team's baseball data system and preparing the baseball operations budget. He also assisted team president Andy MacPhail with trades, free agent signings, arbitration and contract negotations, and player development and scouting. He also could fill in as traveling secretary when needed.
And most of you wouldn't know the guy if you tripped over him. He was one of those behind-the-scenes officials who was extremely valuable to the organization, but didn't get much air time or publicity.
The Orioles have most of their depth in the front office, so they could fill his role internally. But he'll be missed.

BFD, Who cares ? The only thing I wannas hear coming out of the wharehouse is what they're doing about improving the team. I refuse to sit through another losing season, so if they don't make any moves to improve the team for 09 I'll find something else to waste three hours a night doing. Maybe I'll take up fire walking.... it'll be a he__ of alot less painful than watching the O's continue being the laughingstock of baseball. Don't mean to rant on ya Roch, but I like many others am fed up with this garbage year in and year out. The MFY and Sux sign bigtime free agents, while the O's wait until free agency is almost over than sign bootom barrel has beens and try to tell us this year's gonna be different. I swear... I feel like I'm living out the movie Groundhog Day.
If Scott did all that work for us than what the (bleep) does Flanny do?
If they have such depth in the front office, they should convert one or two of them to middle relievers.
I'd rather see Flanagan leaving the front office, isn't his contract up ?
Roch,
I don't remember hearing anything about Flanny's status once the season ended. Is he still with the team in a front office capacity?
Thanks!

Yes, Flanny is still in the organization. - Roch
Wonder what the real story is behind his leaving. I guess we'll never know, but I hope it's not a sign of any sort of front office fracture.
As for the Orioles' most recent minor-league signing, Donnie Murphy is a smallish guy who can play second, third, shortstop, and even the outfield in a pinch. His range is pegged at adequate though he has a good arm, and he has a hitch in his swing which has made it difficult for him to succeed at the Major League level. He has a bit of power but little speed. He's been through the Royal's and A's organizations. Sounds like Scott Moore has some competition.
maybe that wasn't what they meant, at all.
Hopefully we won't see Flanagan's fingerprints on anything.
As Homer Simpson once said "I've already forgotten his name".
Jeff - please don't wait. stop being a fan now. I assure you that reading your childish pouting is more painful to us than watching a game is to you. News flash! They WILL suck again this year so don't wait; make your decision now and don't announce it as if you want someone to call your bluff. Go away now and spare us the pain of watching bad baseball AND reading your childish whiny rants. How many of the bad free agent signings of the past have you boorishly demanded the team make? Were you screaming for Pavano? Are you one of the pie in the sky club saying that if the O's dont sign the best hitter and three of the best four pitchers available in free agency you will carry out some dire threat? No one from the O's has said this year will be different. This year Angelos hasnt poppd up to say he will do everything in his power or some equally insulting lie to the fans. They have a plan. They are sticking to it. It does not include anything that will dramatically change the results for the coming year, even if they do get lucky on AJ or Texeira. So don't wait. Don't bluster. Don't threaten. Don't hold your breath or stomp your foot or count to ten. Go now. Avoid the rush.
For the rest of us, thanks Roch for bringing us actual news instead of just blowing smoke up our butts about scenarios where we sign every free agent of whom anyone has heard and arcane accounting to show how it would be possible to out spend the Yankees in payroll without losing money or how being a general manager is all about prestidigitation and how any signing of a minor league free agent has to snidely be dismissed as "changing the balance of power in the AL East". I would liken you to a kindergarten teacher except most kindergarteners dont yet think they know everything about every subject.
Oh my goodness! First it was Davey Johnson, then Pat Gillick, now it Scott Proefrock.....what is going on....
