Ryan Freel is not happy with the Orioles
| | Comments (18)

Approached at his locker today, Ryan Freel was asked why he went to Delmarva last night to begin an injury-rehab assignment, but never played in the game.

"It would be best for me to keep my mouth shut at this point," he said. But then he didn't.

"I'm not very happy. I was at the game (last night). All I can say is they basically sent me down there and cleared me to play. When I got there they wanted me to take an impact test, right when I got in the door. Under the circumstances when you take that test you want some privacy. I wasn't put in the environment to take that test. The test didn't match up to what their standards were."

Freel went on the DL April 21st with a head injury.

Freel said now he is expected to begin his injury-rehab assignment Friday with Bowie.

"I didn't bite my tongue (when the doctor scratched me last night). I got my point across. I wasn't very happy about it. There's probably more stuff going on here than anyone understands. It is what it is, brother. We've got good chemistry on this team, so I'm not going to sit here and bring this clubhouse down or this organization down. But I am not very happy at all."

Freel was asked if he wants to stay with the Orioles.

"I think change is good for people. I think the expectations were for me to come here and perform in a different way than I did. I don't think I met the expectations the way I did in spring training. There is nothing wrong with change. I don't think I fit here. I can't control what they do with me. It's putting a damper on my career."

Freel said he met today with Andy MacPhail.

"We met this afternoon. It was a great meeting, I have a lot of respect for Andy. We are on the same page."

A reporter asked Freel if he was not happy here, did he think MacPhail would attempt to move him somewhere where he can be happy.

"Yes, I think so. I think Andy and I are on the same page. I wasn't very happy with the situation but what can you do."

Does Freel expect that he will be playing for Bowie on Friday?

"They are intent on me going to Bowie and supposedly coming off the DL when I am supposed to. I don't believe anything until I see it in black and white. I've been around the game long enough. Nothing is set in stone in this game."

Let me be one of the first to say Mr. Freel..."Don't let the door hit'cha, where the good Lord split'ya." Roch you damn well he is gone...

Sayonara Freel, while I like you as a player, you're certainly more suited to the NL style of play. Besides, we all know Justin Turner was the prize of the Ramon trade (other than ditching Ramon that is.)

Brian said:

Good move him, its not like he is batting .500 with 20 HRs, he is a .100 hitter who doesnt hit home runs EVER. He sucks and the team knows they should have tried to get a young pitcher instead of him

John said:

Sounds to me like Freel would rather be anywhere but here. But is he willing to give his salary up,that's the question. I still havn't figured out what an impact test is. Has to be done in private? Hmmm..I think I get it.I'll be happy to trade places with him on the bench and cash the checks. Maybe he needs a week stocking shelves at WalMart?

What's this guy's problem? He played in a significant number of games in April before getting hurt; he hit .133, but we know he is capable of better since he is a career .270 hitter. Come back, put your head down and do your job. If not, go away.

John said:

Ryan Freel, bye brother we don't need you!

The Matt Bus said:

The Matt Bus isn't happy with Freel's .133 batting average. Maybe if he was better than 2 for 15 he might get more AB's. We should just waive him because no one will trade for him. I thought we got rid of Ramon Hernandez.

Lawrence B. said:

So Ryan, let me get this straight.....At some point this year you actually thought that you DID fit here? You did realize that you were nothing more than a bench spot while we wait for the cavalry of Wieters, Snyder, Reimold, Moore, and Montanez to arrive. Sorry Freel, a little slow on this one, don't ya think?

SHERNORIOLES said:

WHAT HAS FREEL DONE FOR THIS TEAM?? IT WORKS BOTH WAYS! HE IS PRETTY MUCH A
SURE OUT LIKE WIGGINGTON. DONT NEED HIM --BRING UP A YOUNGSTER!

Ron said:

Sounds like he was hit in the head with a baseball.
He's a utility player at best. Live with it Freel.

Orange Juice Is Not Kool-Aid said:

Why can't Freel keep his idiotic mouth closed? He knows MacPhail is trying to trade him but there isn't a market for him right now. If he keeps mouthing off to the media, teams will just wait until he is lamentably released, then sign him for the minimum while the Orioles gets stuck paying his overinflated salary. How is that fair to anybody else?

Steve said:

I understand why Freel's frustrated, but I think he saw the writing on the wall before the season even started.

He's redundant, especially considering what they're paying him. Now, if they can only convince someone to take him.

I'm not holding my breath.

Jeremy said:

Freel seems like a bit of a loose cannon and a hothead. He probably does need a fresh start somewhere, or his lack of PT is going to lead to more outbursts and more problems.

BUT - people here are getting carried away denigrating his abilities. Freel has a career .271 BA and .357 OBA, still runs pretty well and is adequate in the OF and at 2B and 3B. He does have value to a team that needs a utility guy. I'm not sure how much we'd get for him at this point but let's stop talking about him like he's worthless. Justin Turner, the "prize" of the Ramon trade? C'mon, Turner will be lucky to match Freel's career numbers. The prize of the Ramon trade was getting rid of Ramon.

All good points, Jeremy. The fans haven't seen Freel play like he can yet. Still, I'm suprised he has spoken out as he has. He surely sounds like he wants out. It may be hard to trade him. He may have to play his way back onto the roster and show his stuff in whatever playing time they can find for him. This saga may have a few more chapters. - Steve

Teresa said:

He may be a good player but he has yet to prove himself to the fans and our coaches. When he gets the opportunities to play, he pretty much has to be flawless make all the catches, and hit well! Honestly, when he's up to bat I'm pretty much thinking 'easy out.' Either way, it sounds like his head and mouth are bigger than his playing abilities. Get this whiner outta here! haha

Rick said:

Hey all you Hernandez haters...we love him here in Cincy. He's just starting to heat up at the plate, has thrown well and loves working with a GOOD pitching staff, unlike what he had in Bird-Town. (And what's with Baltimore's infatuation anyway with birds who do nothing but poop on statues and cars??!!)
Freel is a hard-nosed player who can't take all the froo-froo crap in Baltimore. I hope he lands with a team that knows and appreciates his skills as a 100% hustle player.

terpfan said:

Hey Rick, stick to the message boards in your back-water town. Hope you enjoyed Corey Patterson last year. You'll probably end up enjoying Ramon the water buffalo about as much. You can criticize the O's all you want, but they brought the supposed Big Red Machine to its knees in 1970 baby.

True Baseball Fan said:

You guys are a bunch of tools. Who do u have on your team even worth watching? Nobody, and who would want to play for your sorry team? Nobody, thanks for the catcher, he was just tired of playin for a bunch of whiney losers and so is Freel
