Getting a little more specific about the call-ups
The Orioles will bring up three players tomorrow when teams are allowed to expand their 25-man rosters. The group will include one position player.
We can speculate whether infielder Justin Turner or outfielder Jeff Fiorentino will be taking up space in the clubhouse tomorrow. They'll probably wait until later to add a third catcher.
Three or four players will join the club on Sept. 8, when the Orioles begin a series in Boston. The bullpen figures to be well-stocked.
Also, Koji Uehara was scheduled to throw a 25-pitch sideline session today at the minor league complex in Sarasota, Fla. He'll throw 30 pitches on Wednesday, 35 on Friday and 40 on Sunday.
"Then we'll make a determination where he's at after that," manager Dave Trembley said.
Uehara won't be part of a six-man rotation in September. If he's healthy again, he'll work out of the bullpen.
The plan calls for Uehara to be a one- or two-inning reliever. What happens in spring training, and beyond, is anyone's guess.
"I think we will remain consistent with what we have said in the past. When he does get here, he'll be in the bullpen," Trembley said. "I don't know the (duration) as far as whether he'll throw one inning, or two innings. But he will be a bullpen guy. I know that is what he'll be. But before we get to that point, he has to throw today and then we'll see how he is on Wednesday, then we'll see on Friday, then we'll see how he is next Sunday, then after that, that decision will be made exactly what his role will be when he comes here. But he'll be a bullpen guy.
"I would not expect him to go more than two innings. If he does, I would think that would be later on in September. I don't know if he'll build up to that. I'll be perfectly honest with you, the information I am giving you is what I have, I couldn't speculate on anything (with him) in the bullpen. I think it is a wait-and-see thing."

Freel got cut again. I wonder where he will sign next?
Hey Roch:
Do you see the Orioles possibly looking into John Smoltz this off-season? Ever since he said he fixed his tipping his pitches problem he has looked good in St. Louis in his 2 starts, I think he could be a good mentor for some of the younger guys for a year or two.
Or even Kevin Milwood, Jarrod Washburn for some sort of a veteran presence.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't know the Orioles' plans at this point, but Smoltz would seem doubtful. - Roch
Saw that about Freel. Wow, he's had a really rough year.
Thanks for all the hard work, Roch.
I went to a Tides game last week. The team has been decimated by all the callups to the majors. Pitching was awful, led by David Pauley's poor start. Defense and baserunning were atrocious. Hitting was ok. Rhyne Hughes hit a deep homer and Fiorentino had some nice hits.
I must mention that Justin Turner is a class act. Turner and Fiorentino were having a catch during pre-game warmups. An errant throw nailed a young spectator in the cheek. The boy was taken by an usher for medical attention (an ice pack). Both players rushed over to the seats to see if the boy was ok. Another boy retrieved the ball and handed it to Fiorentino. He signed the ball to give to the boy who was hit. After the injured kid was escorted away by an usher, both player continued to watch from the field. They eventually resumed their catch, but kept taking glances towards the concourse to check on the boy. It was obvious that they were geniuinely concerned for the boy and worried for his safety. A little later, Turner called over an usher to ask about the boy's condition. When he was told the boy was fine, Turner asked the usher to bring him down to give him something. The usher didn't return with the boy, but Turner retrieved a bat from the dugout and gave it to the usher to give to the kid. Kudos to Turner and Fiorentino for handling the situation with class.
I give credit to all the players for signing plenty of autographs before the game. As they walked onto the field from the dugout, all the players went straight to the railing to sign for the kids before starting their warmups. No one had to call out their names and beg for a signature, as I've seen at other ballparks. There was one exception... Joey Gathright ignored the kids and went straight for the field. Of course he's no longer with the team....
As dominating as Uehara is for a couple of innings, I think he could ultimately have a late-inning role, either as a closer or set-up.
Koji has as much chance of succeeding in the majors as a chocolate cake does of surviving the night at Hogbood's house!
Roch,
Will Koji be "brought up to speed" by pitching in a simulated game?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right now, he's only been scheduled to throw bullpen sessions. - Roch
with lou montanez starting rehab in the low minors if he appears to be healthy do you think he'll be called up in a week or 2? and do you think if he is called up they might look at him at first base? i can't imagine koji being a part of the rotation next year. gotta give credit to crow and pie and macphail. i, from the start, thought pie was a waste of time. his improvement at the plate has been great. when you're hitting home runs to the opposite field that shows something. hitting the pitch were it's thrown and having the powwer to hit it out. i hope wherever he plays this winter the orioles have someone staying on top of him teaching him base running, bunting and fielding. he needs a great deal of work on a lot of the basics. he really has no baseball instincts. anyone who thinks macphail hasn't done an exceptional job in such a short time really shouldn't be allowed to write in more than 3-4 lines to this or any other blog. sadly most people who read and write to this blog or any other really have no real understanding about baseball but at least they have enough passion to write in or read.

There's a good chance that Montenez gets transferred to 60-day DL. - Roch
JPA: I was at the Man U. v Arsenal game and the Everton v. Wigan games over the weekend.
Both were cracking matches. Old Trafford was awesome as always.
As for the Everton match, Wigan has no place in the EPL. I know Newcastle had a worse record last year, but based on support, knowledge and actually CARING, Newcastle deserves to be up in the EPL far more than Wigan. Wigan FC could disappear tomorrow and no one would notice.
They had 3,000 seats in their away section at Goodison and I would say at most 300 were filled. It was pathetic. Wigan is 40 minutes from Liverpool. And at the match at Wigan last week against Man U, they failed to sell out. In fact they had about 10,000 empty seats. If you can't sell out your ground for a match against the best team in the world, you deserve to be relegated to the under 10 league.
Meanwhile Newcastle continues to draw 50,000 for every match. The Toon Army moans a bit too much but overall the club deserves to be up here and Wigan should be playing games in a car park somewhere in County Durham against 11 sheep.
Roch,
What do you think about the Orioles signing John Lackey in the off season. He will be a free agent.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd pursue him, but don't think he'll come here. - Roch
Brummie/Jack (the same person),
I am finding your remarks about Hobgood and weight to be offensive. I am an overweight person, so when you say that, makes me think you think your better than me. I also find your knowledge of prospects to lack any credibility anyway, but you can quit the weight stabs, very offensive and prejudice.
Another thing I will say is, Hobgood is not out of shape nor what you compare to other players who have played for the Orioles, he was a 3 sport athlete. You can't be out of shape and compete in 3 sports. I am sure if you both were on a track, he would run circles around you.
Roch- I can't believe someone hasn't asked why the O's didn't put in a claim for Brad Penny... there's a dude that needs to go back to "getting aluminum out."
There he goes again. Way to disparage an 18 year old kid Brummie. Just because you didn't like him being drafted; it doesn't give you the right to make personal attacks.
Also, keep your futball comments for some other blog.
Rock,
I know that a 3rd catcher is great for a manager to have, but we haven't had a 3rd all year. Nothing against either one but neither of the choices seems worth losing prospect from the 40 man roster. Am I misunderstanding the rule here?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Orioles do this every September. It gives them more flexibility. Wieters can DH when Moeller starts, without risk of losing the DH later if they want to pinch-hit for Moeller or he's injured. - Roch
You know BO, when you make comments as Jack and say Hobgood will never succeed based on his first handful of starts as a teenager in rookie ball, you're just stupid. When you make comments about his weight or eating habits, such as the one above, you're an absolute disgrace. Worst part is, you're probably some fat a$$ slob playing on the internet in his mother's basement. You have such an inferiority complex that you have to take cheap shots at people you don't even know. You should be ashamed of yourself. Once and for all, go away.
I'M SURE THE PLAYERS ARE HAPPY TO BE CALLED UP , ESPECIALLY THE ONES WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE MAJORS BEFORE, BUT THAT CUTS NORFOLKS ROSTER TO SHREDS THE FINAL SEVEN GAMES OF THEIR SEASON. I PERSONALLY AM GLAD I SAID A WEEK AGO I HOPED 1 OR 2 OUTFIELDERS,AT LEAST 1 INFIELDER,AND 1 CATCHER,AND SEVERAL PITCHERS WOULD BE CALLED UP. IT WILL BE GOOD TO SEE SOME OF THE FUTIRE RESERVE ORIOLES GET A CHANCE TO PLAY SOME IN SEPTEMBER.
