Pie on Pie
Felix Pie actually felt sad after the game because he believed that he showed "too much emotion on the field" after reaching third base on his triple to complete the cycle.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia glared at Pie as he went to the mound to make a pitching change.
Personally, I think Scioscia needs to get over it, but that's just me.
"I apologize to Mike Scioscia and the players on the other team," Pie said. "It's part of the game, emotion, but I showed too much.
Felix Pie gets a pie in the face after hitting for the cycle in the O's win
"I was excited, but it was too much emotion on the field."
He's showed a lot of enthusiasm working with hitting coach Terry Crowley. I hope that's OK with Scioscia.
"That kid has worked every day in the tunnel," Crowley said. "Every day, without missing any time, he just comes in and works. And he went a long span without getting to play because other guys were playing good and stuff. But he just kept working and working. It's to his credit. We know he's got some ability, and tonight was a game he'll never forget."

Pie needs to play. He's young & very raw but he has a boatload of potential. They should rotate Pie, Jones & Reimold between OF spots & DH. We know what Scott can do. In my opnion, its not much. People gave up on Pie way too fast.
Mike Scioscia can suck it, Trebek.
Man, lame for Mike Scioscia for making the kid feel bad about anything on the night. What in the world is a manager doing trying to intimidate a player with evil stares? Somebody check that mans ego. When "old school mangers" go wild. Talk about taking the fun out of the game.
Great game for Felix. Pay no attention to Scioscia young man.
Scioscia needs to get a life...as much as his club has slapped us around the last couple of years, he should except a rare Oriole drubbing with a grain of salt and a dash of professionalism...I hope Pie's career night causes digestion during and after his postgame meal in Little Italy...
With that being said, if Captain Kirk(I think Dave Trembley resembles the fearless Enterprise leader)places # 18 back in the line-up sometime this weekend, and you would think he will, I pray Felix doesn't get TOO comfortable in the box...can you say "rib buster?"
I went to a luncheon today with Andy MacPhail, Jim Hunter, and Paul Blair. I have a full recap posted at Orioles Hangout if you wanna read it. Some interesting things were said. MacPhail was pretty candid.
I agree Roch, Scioscia needs to get over it. With the "cycle" being such a rarity a baseball man like him should have appreciated it. Thorne alluded to the possibility that later in the series Pie may end up with a bruise, that may be what the O's need to bring the team together. Trembley made an interesting comment during the post-game, commenting about Pie's hard work and gaining acceptance in the club house...what's up with that? Was he getting shunned in the club house? Inquiring minds want to know, okay maybe just mine!

He was just quiet and kept to himself. We didn't start to see his personality come through until later. - Roch
I'm really, really happy for Felix. He's taken a tremendous amount of grief from many of the commenters on this blog. Regardless of where he goes from here, tonight was a huge helping of vindication for him and for those who favored giving him a chance.
No need for pie to apologize. He did nothing wrong. What he accomplished tonight is something that is very difficult and commendable. Good for you pie. U deserve it
Roch-
What, like when Vlad is the walkoff against Ray a couple years back?
Good for Felix. You have to say he has come a long way since the spot light was off of him. He is a truly viable 4th outfielder. I just wish he would keep his head in the game a little better. But, he is young and he is just getting to that 200 ab number.
Scioscia needs to kiss my ***. A bright moment in a dull Orioles season, and he has a hissy. Let the last place team enjoy one exciting day, while the first place team has a rare bad night on their way to another trip to the playoffs.
Roch:
DT needs to borrow a page from the LaRussa playbook. If he plans on starting Pie tomorrow he should instruct his pitcher (or suggest it to someone who suggests it to someone who mentions it to Matusz) that one of the first Angels gets hit by a pitch. A warning gets issued, and if one of Scioscia's pitchers does it, gets tossed from the game. It would be an ideal way to get rid of tomorrow's Angel starter...
Roch-
i think JJ Hardy is going to be fantastic. He sort of already is. He is having a down year. He did have 2 fantastic years before this one.
BUT, did someone really suggest Erbe, Joseph, and Scott for him?
What is wrong with people?
BA points out that on any other team in MLB, Erbe would most likely be their TOP pitching prospect. That he has dominating front end rotation stuff and is still VERY young.
Erbe should be UNTOUCHABLE.
Also, I don't know if Josh Bell will be the next David Wright or not, but, there is a rumor going around that the O's were really after James Loney. Can you confirm that?
Bell is really making a case to maybe get a shot out of camp in 2010.
At the risk of being censored by the blog f*&^ Scioscia. Good for Pie, good for Crowley. Its been a tough year for Pie and the club so just exccccuuuuussse us for kicking a little Angel butt.
Trembley and McPhail had talked about making sure Pie starts a game or two a week. Does this do much or anything to alter the plan? Also, with Pie having the big game, how much more pressure does this put on Trembley? This year is supposed to be all about development but playing Pie takes away at bats from Scott and Huff but Scott and Huff are still better players than Pie is right now. I know fans and certainly McPhail would sacrifice wins this year if it helps in the future but Trembley's job is on the line. How much more difficult does this make life for him?
Great game for the Os tonight.
Honestly, Scioscia just needs to get over himself tonight. Pie had an incredible night and his work finally paid off for him and he deserves to celebrate! I commend Pie for apologizing if he thought it was necessary, but I don't see what is wrong with celebrating.
Congrats to Felix for a GREAT game tonight!!
Mike Scioscia...while I understand your competitive nature and your disdain because your pitchers just got blasted... c'mon man...give the young man a break...he finally has a breakout game and is feeling like he's on cloud nine and you go and ruin it by glaring at him...you should've saved those glares for your pitching staff..
My hats off to you Felix for being such a good sport and a gentleman.
Hmmmmm..well with all that said..I guess what I know a few "Trolls" will be eating for breakfast in the morning... I think it's called "Humble Pie" ?
To the trolls.....
Sure glad we cut Pie earlier when you called for his head......Oh wait...you were wrong !
Congrats to the kid for keeping his mouth shut, working hard without complaint, and cashing in when he got his chance. He is a much better role model than some who find something to complain about on a daily basis.
And to Mr. McPhail.... thank you for making this team better talent-wise. Now if the players will do their part, some of the jackasses can stop their braying !
Jim
I called the Cycle after he hit the home-run.
You notice when Melky Cabrera hit for the cycle ESPN puts it as a headline and its #1 in top ten plays. Our guy gets it and its not even in the top 10 and not a headline. Just the over hype machine favoring the Yankees and showing their bias.
Looks like we won't be getting Sano anytime soon, people...
"O's: Sano's price too high
The Orioles remain interested in highly touted Dominican shortstop Miguel Angel Sano, but they're not currently prepared to meet his asking price.
Sano, a 16-year-old who is considered one of the top international free agents and has worked out for the Orioles multiple times, is believed to be seeking between $5.5 and $7 million.
"The agent has officially begun the process of negotiating with several clubs and we have not made an offer," said John Stockstill, the club's international scouting director. "The current asking price is north of where we currently have an interest in going."
5.5 to 7 million dollars?!? For a 16 year old?!
I don't think so! If it were about 4 to 5 million, I might make an offer, but that's too high for my tastes. PLUS - we don't even know if he's 16 yet! MLB hasn't even confirmed anything!
Where are all those Pie bashing, MacPhail hating trolls tonite?
What an *ss Scioscia is. His team is first place, over 20 games over 500, the Orioles are 20 games under, and Pie has had difficult first year--and this guy glares at him for showing emotion after completing one of the rarest hitting feats in baseball? That is bush, bush, bush.
Congratulations to Felix! He really has shown improvement this year. It would be great if he could become the player that MacPhail saw in him. Only--what do we with 4 potentially terrific outfielders, without even mentioning the guy on IR, Lou? Sheesh, if only one of them could play one of the infield corners.
Yessssss!!! Pie doing that was so good to see. Again, Pie has no bizz hitting in the 2 hole but he's showed steady improvement all season long and there could be a battle for left field next season. We may have a really good problem on our hands, and we could use Pies speed offensively and defensively, but Reimold doesnt belong at DH either.
Obviously it could be considered rediculous to get so excited about one break out game, but if you've been watching, Pie has made steady improvement and I just have a real good feeling about him. Heres to Luke Scott getting hot and getting some trade value for himself this offseason.
Awesome job Pie! If, and I mean if, he can show some consistency over the upcoming weeks, I sure wouldn't mind seeing Pie in left and Reimold at DH for the future (with Reimold getting the occasional playing time in left). Oh, and just ignore Scoscia, he's just mad we killed him. :)
Steve (with the cap S), I totally agree about Sciocia. The Angels have been beating everybody like a drum, and he can't take this? If Pie had done what he did at Angels Stadium, that would be one thing. But he did it in front of the home fans.
Way to go, Felix.
Roch-
Let me ask, Macphail has been quoted twice this week saying that Snyder will take over at 1b next year. That answers that. If Bell is not ready at 3rd, do you think a trade is in the works?
Also, Macphail has said how they have tried and tried to attract a FrontEnd Ace for this team but no one wants to come here despite being the high bidder. Do you think they will have to add some years onto a contract to make that pitcher feel more secure?
Finally, Arietta dominated the fall league as the closer/set-up man, I think he will and could be a dynamite starter, but, isn't there something to be said for Joe Nathans and Mo Rivera's that if we can lock down a closer for a 8-10 year period and make the game shorter, someone like an Arietta might be the thing to do?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Where is MacPhail quoted saying these things? Please provide a link. - Roch
Pie in your face. I was at the game tonight. Very exciting to say the least. He should get the start Saturday, regardless. Hopefully, no Angel will throw at him.
Peeeee-Ayyyeee clap,clap,clap, Peeeee-Ayyyyyyeeeee, clap, clap, clap.
Monster game, great enthusiasm. Just what this team needs. We need some fire and he showed it. Soscia can suck it. Pie is a good young player getting after it. He's starting to show his talent. WE'RE starting to show our talent and the top teams don't like it. Soscia complains, Elsbery throws dirt in Weiters face, they know whats going on, they see competition and they are trying to intimidate us and hold us down. As long as our kids keep fighting and show they're not intimidated it will start to get to teams like the Yankees and Sox because the last thing they want is another Rays on their heels. These teams know things are changing and they are showing it by their over reacations. Its coming people, the Rev-O-lution is near.
Well if we give em Hell when they play poorly, which is wayyyy too often - we gotta applaud them when the play great! Tonite was a rare bird indeed! Why in the world can't they do this just a little more often? But, way to go Pie - I felt he was coming along and tonite he showed he might just amount to something yet!! Good for you - hold your head high and tell Scosia to grow up and get a life, get over himself and 4 or 5 other things Roch won't let me say in public. Trembly should show some stones and speak up for his player who did NOthing wrong!!! Now one negative that needs to be corrected quickly by Mcphail if Trembly won't - instruct our young pitchers that when your home town fans give you a rousing standing ovation when you leave the game, show some appreciation and plain old manners with a tip of the cap acknowledgement!! WHY do these guys think it's UNcool to say thanks?? I just don't get it. For that boreish behavior, squandering their wannabe good fans favor is stupid and RUDE! I hope it's addressed.
I know it doesn't happen often, and I know that they could still say some things, but I love it when the O's play so well that the trolls go into hiding. What a great night for Pie who has batted better and better as the season's wore on. I wonder where he'd be right now if he'd been playing all year? Thanks O's. A night without the trolls is fine by me!
Pie had two helpings of pie
Pie doesn't owe anyone any apologys, I don't remember Mike Scioscia or any of the Angels ever apologizing for the antics of Frankie Rodriguez every time he recorded a save. He acted like an ass every time. Now I don't know how many saves have been recorded in baseball history, but, I would bet its a little more common than hitting for the cycle. Mike Scioscia can kiss my a$$!
Roch-
Another thing about breaking the bank for draft picks. I think it is so hypocritical that the MLB makes statements they do about this situation and paying over slot, then at the same time could care less that the Yankee's basically buy themselves into the playoffs every year.
But OOOOOOHHHHHHH, shame on the Orioles for taking a gamble on Coffey for 1.15 million bucks.
Also, are we ready to start getting serious about Aaron Wirsch yet? How about Dowdy and Stampone then?
What are the chances that the O's go after Holliday and ask him to transition to 1b? DH?
Justin: Can you provide a link to your recap of that MacPhail/Hunter/Blair conversation? or more simply just copy it here? Figuring out how to navigate the O's Hangout site has never seemed worth the trouble, but I'd be interested.
Roch, I was interested in the comments that Pie has "turned the corner" in the clubhouse as far as being accepted. Was that ever anything more than just not knowing people and not being particularly good with English? Was that also about his poor play on the field early on?
Driving down to the game tonight from Philly with a friend. Maybe I'll stop by the press box and say hello. And other Rochettes or Rocheteers attending? Any parking or ticket buying suggestions?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He was just quiet initially. Didn't blend in much, didn't interact much. - Roch
How would sosa like to lose 30-3? get a life you jerk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell Scioscia to take the the Rally Monkey out of his arse...good for Felix...now hopefully Trembley doesn't sit him tonight?!?
I agree with Tim in CA's post about Pie. It's great to see him have such an historic performance (4th O in history to hit for the cycle). From the very beginning I have supported letting this guy just play. I disagreed with those who criticized him before the season started saying he was wrongly handed the job. I disagreed with those who said Lou Montanez or others deserved the spot out of spring training and I disagreed especially with the way the O's handled the guy by essentially pulling the plug on him in less than 100 AB after DT dissed him publicly for stuff many others on the team were doing. I guess in the end it has worked out because we have learned that have two young outfielders who can play (in addition to Jones and Markakis). Nothing wrong with having four solid young outfielders.
Not surprisingly, this performance (and an O's blowout of the Angles) evokes SILENCE OF THE TROLLS; but, somewhat surprisingly it prompts some positive words from Brian who, on more than one occasion, forecast that Pie would be serving him drinks on a beach instead of playing outfield for us. Anyway, glad to hear even Brian giving the guy some love. Oh, and I couldn't agree more that Soscia needs to get real. Screw him.
CA Tim, I do wonder about the Mora in the O's HOF comment, however. I know they have greatly watered it down, but putting Mora in might be a new low.
Pie hit for the cycle?! I'm pretty excited for him. I was definitely on the bandwagon to let this kid go, but sometimes a little perspective to bring you a little closer from getting rid of the kid. The pie in the face gag is getting a little old. Every team seems to be doing it. Someone should get the gatorade cooler for a change. Just a thought.
Justin you got a link to that? Is it on the messageboard? I couldn't find it on the homepage.
Last night's performance is certainly one to remember for both Pie and Tillman. Chris was very effective after the strange first inning. His line was damaged a little when Albers allowed the inherited runner to score. Just once I would like to see DT let one of the young guys finish the sixth or seventh inning after giving up a two out hit. How many times have we seen that scenario this season?
As for Felix, he showed he could hit the curveball last night. The biggest night of his season and a couple of things still went wrong. For some reason Felix just seems like a little bit of a misfit. There's always something going on . . . a little drama. First, the hand injury last night, which easily could have been avoided. No doubt he leads the team in trainer visits. Then he draws the ire of Scioscia by his reaction on the field after hitting the triple. Maybe if he had been at first base it wouldn't have been so bad, but right in front of the Angels dugout? Ouch! Pretty sure the Angels won't be flat tonight and for the rest of the series.
Hopefully, Felix plays again tonight. His performance certainly begs the question that has shown up here many times . . . . Can Nolan Reimold play first base?
Roch,
What do you figure is wrong with Matt Albers? Since he got his ERA down to 3.50 on July 31, he's hit a wall in August. Five innings with 11 earned runs. Maybe Post Trading Deadline Relief Syndrome?
YAWN!
Just as the fool aid drinkers claim that one loss or bad game does not define a team or player, I will happily apply this logic to Pie's "cycle" and Andrew's plan.
Look at Melky Cabrera. He hit for the cycle and no one is saying "5 tools!"
It was one game people, a game the Angels gave up on after the 3rd inning. The win was nice, but it does not hide the bigger problems this club has thanks in part to MACFAIL.
You can smell the "Pie as a regular LFer" debate coming the surface. Andrew will certainly demand it next spring.
I'm not trying to be the jerk here but Scioscia consistently gets more from his team than the sum of it's parts. Can anyone honestly say that about any manager we've had since Davey J?
OK class. I'm happy Pie had a great game, but let's be real here. That's ONE game out of ~115! I hope he gained enough confidence to keep it up, but I'm not ready to pronounce him Roberto Clemente just yet.
Scoiscia will probably have him drilled when the time's appropriate.
Looks like Sano is out of our price range. Admittedly it's a pretty high price tag for a 16-year old. But the agent is negotiating with teams and we aren't one of them as usual. Second shortstop in a week.
To quote the Sun:
The Orioles remain interested in highly touted Dominican shortstop Miguel Angel Sano, but they're not currently prepared to meet his asking price.
Sano, a 16-year-old who is considered one of the prizes of the international free agent market, is believed to be seeking between $5.5 and $7 million. The Orioles have worked Sano out at their Dominican baseball complex on several occasions, though they've yet to make an offer to his agent, Rob Plummer.
"The agent has officially begun the process of negotiating with several clubs and we have not made an offer," said Orioles international scouting director John Stockstill, who wouldn't comment when asked how much money Sano is seeking. "The current asking price is north of where we currently have an interest in going."
----
I keep waiting for the day when somebody isn't out of our price range that the fan base is excited about. When he isn't out of the price range of other teams.
Pie doesn't need to apologize to anyone. He had a once in a lifetime experience last night during a really rough season. Baseball is suppose to be FUN!
Anyways, congrats, Felix!
Roch do away managers give a post game news conference? Or do you get a chance to do a post game interview? I would love to hear what opposing managers have to say about the game and our rookies. It would be nice to hear a follow up to Pie after his apology.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They meet with their reporters after the game in the manager's office. - Roch
Pie showed more class than Mike Scioscia if you asked me... he took out his frustration at getting waxed on the wrong guy. He should try looking at his pitchers that way.
Brummie and Scioscia give it up for Pie and if you're not down with that we got two words for ya
ocj,
Here is what I found on the O.H. Roch, this contains A.M.'s statement about Snyder in 2010.
Full Recap of Lunch with Andy MacPhail! Posted by terporiolefan
I had the pleasure today of being a guest at an Orioles Luncheon hosted by Bank of America. Jim Hunter emceed with MacPhail and Paul Blair as guests. AM spoke about the state of the team and then opened the floor to some questions:
Andy MacPhail
Regarding his plan when he arrived: "Fill organization with young talent like Tampa Bay does"..."Its a percentages game. There more young talent, the greater chance of overall success there is, because most will not live up to their expectations"
Regarding Team Budget: "I knew right away that we would not have the budget of the Yankees, whom we all saw spend $250 million. But neither do about 28 other teams. They do it with youth too."
Regarding International Scouting: "This has been the focus since I got here to make sure our money was being well spent to improve this organization here and abroad. We've made huge inroads in getting into Japan and in the DR with an improved facility."
Regarding Bryan Coffey: "This was a guy that was going to Duke till we changed his mind."
Question: Why did you trade Sherrill?: "I didn't want to, really I didn't. But when the opportunity presented itself to fill a void at 3B, we had to make this move."
Question: When do you project Hobgood reaching the majors?: "He could take same path as guys like Tillman and Matusz, but really we want to see him dominate one level each year. You may see him around the same age as these other guys now, 22."
MY Question: You've said, "Grow the arms, buy the bats." How does that philosophy fit into the apparent need for a veteran starter at the front of the rotation? Will you look to acquire one?: "I'd LOVE to. I won't hide that. But the fact is pitchers simply don't want to come here, not when they know they'll be facing lineups like the Yankees that many times. Which is why I've said 'grow the arms', because we have to do that to compete. And we've been fortunate that we've been able to greatly increase our involvement internationally so we can bring over some arms from Japan that haven't yet heard of us. (Everyone laughs!) How many pitchers did we bring to camp last year, 36? And how many can we say were successful? Not as many as we had hoped. We had planned for better stopgaps to give the young guys more time. We were the highest bidder on two pitchers, but were turned down. So we went with what we did, which put me in the position I am now, seeing our guys out there maybe earlier than I would have liked."
Question: What position players do you envision seeing the majors next year?: "Look for Snyder at 1B next year. He can hit. He's proving it in every level this year."
Question: When do you see Arrieta making it to Baltimore?: "He could be ready for 2010. Don't look for him this year. He's thrown enough innings this year."
****At this point, MacPhail left the room, and discussion opened up with Paul Blair and Jim Hunter taking our questions. They seemed to be more candid with MacPhail out of the room then they would have normally been.
Paul Blair
Question: What are your thoughts on PEDs?: "I'm thankful they weren't available when I played. The temptation would have been too strong for many out there. There is only rule that has never been broken in baseball - hitting an umpire - because if someone did, they would be gone, done. That's how it should be. If you're caught, you're gone."
MY Question: Have you had a chance to watch the O's this year? Do you have an opinion on their apparent lack of motivation?: "The game has changed. The clubhouse has changed. It used to be a team game, and it needs to return to that. When I played, it was one philosophy from top to bottom. We gotta get back to that, and I think we are. But right now it's an 'I first' mentality, not 'team first' like it should be. For most of my career I played for teams fighting for or staying in 1st. That's a lot easier on you than playing for last like they are today. This team needs leadership from top to bottom that will hold them accountable. That's the only way they'll win."
Question: What are your thoughts on Adam Jones?: "He's got to play hitters better. Too many balls are being hit over his head. If a ball is hit and it stays in the park, it needs to be caught."
Jim Hunter
Question regarding covering so many frustrating losses: "It's challenging. Postgame or pregame the next day is a lot harder than in-game because you don't have a chance to dwell on it while it's happening. But hey, I started here in '97 when they went wire to wire. I know this team will get there again."
Regarding my question about motivation: "MacPhail knows we need a veteran pitcher. Trust me, he knows it. He's said so much without saying much at all. Look at our rotation. Our oldest pitcher is Guthrie, who because he spent 2 years in Spain on a Mormon mission, hasn't pitched as long as he could have. I have friends in the Toronto organization, and you know why they're glad they held on to Halladay? Not just because he's so good, but because he makes every other pitcher good just by going out there and leading by example. We won't be able to get Halladay, but MacPhail's gonna go get someone to do that, lead by example.
Regarding leadership in the lineup: "We need a hitter, and not just a role player that's a big bat. We need an everyday team player that will be that leader this team needs on the field. Last Sunday during the game, Buck and I talked about how Leyland says that as the manager he's the leader in the clubhouse. Well he's right, but we still need someone who's going out there everyday and leading these young guys on the field. That culture is already starting in the minors. Look at Caleb Joseph in Frederick. He's been known to sleep in the clubhouse after a night game so he can wake up early enough to prepare for a day game. That's the kind of team attitude we need up here. This team is stacked with young talent, but no one is speaking up. Markakis is one of the top OFers in the game, but that's just not his way. It's a good day if you get a 'hello' out of him. Really. He's that quiet. I see Adam Jones eventually filling that role as a vocal leader. Last year, his first year here, he was on a veteran team, so he sat back and listened. But now this team is getting younger, and he's been to the All-Star game where he shared a clubhouse with guys who know how to win like Derek Jeter. That's gotta wear off on him in a good way."
Recap: I was very surprised how candid MacPhail was. Paul Blair gave great insight into his view on the team. He seemed to focus more on leadership coming from the coaches while Hunter focused more on team leadership. All in all it was a great time!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are statements made at a luncheon, not a formal sit-down interview with reporters, but some interesting stuff. However, he isn't saying that Snyder will be the Opening Day first baseman. He couldn't possibly project that. The guy was scuffling at Triple-A until a few weeks ago. What if he bombs in spring training? I wouldn't read too much into that. It's hoped that he'll be the first baseman at some point, and maybe he wins the job next spring, but you can't make that declaration on Aug. 15. - Roch
>We know what Scott can do. In my opnion, its not much. People gave up on Pie way too fast.
I could not agree more.
I'm looking forward to the bench clearing brawl that will undoubtedly happen after Pie gets beamed. They are hilarious to watch baseball players trying to have a hockey fight. HAHAHAHA.
WTG Pie! Nice to see him have some success finally. GO O's
I agree with Brian -- Pie showed real class. Regardless of whether we think Scioscia was being petty, one of the unwritten rules of baseball is that you don't show up the opposing team. Pie is young, has had a very difficult year adjusting to his role on the team (especially considering the messianic build-up he received after the trade), and just had the game of his (professional) life. Put in that context, Pie's post-game comments are a lot more remarkable than his in-game celebration.
B_O
Yes it is one game, kinda like the one game (I mean inning) that you/Jack were ready to declare Hobgood, no good. He has gotten better ever since and this one game is a continuation of visible improvement of Pie. Instead of the negative, try looking on the kool aid side a little bit. There are good things happening with this team that stick out among the growing pains and give real reason to think about a future where we are once again competitive. We will not outspend the teams from further north, so building from within is the best path. Get over it. Try and enjoy. It is hard to do on many nights, but try.

Okay, if Luke Scott can't do much then why is he still here? If he couldn't do much he wouldn't be in the majors and he wouldn't still be in the American League. Simple as that, everyone that's in the majors deserves to be here and has stuff to show for it. A lot of fans give up hope too fast when a player gets in a slump or makes a mistake. I bet if Felix didn't do anything after he made that error in the first inning, they would be like "Felix shouldn't be playing". I'm not saying Felix doesn't deserve to play because I thought he deserved to get time split with Reimold before he hit for the cycle. Yes, I do understand Luke is very streaky but Aubrey Huff just started to come around as well and so have others. When Luke wasn't in his slump, the fans couldn't get enough of him but now because he's in a slump no one wants to see him. I don't understand if you all say you're true fans of the Orioles but then say that stuff. Also, Luke came into the season thinking he was going to get some time in left field, I've seen him there twice. He is a DH and he can't make up for it in the field. He only has one option and it's to hit. When Ortiz went into his big slump in the beginning, the Red Sox fans still stuck by him and gave him motivation. Why can't the Orioles fans do that for the Orioles' not doing their bests or even for Orioles that are doing well now? I think you're giving up on the Orioles players too fast, we do and have had losing records but fans stick by their team and players, don't say someone doesn't deserve to be there, that's like a slap in the face.
Prized Dominican shortstop Sano passes MLB inspection

The prized prospect of this year's July 2nd international free agent class, Miguel Angel Sano, passed his Major League Baseball age and identity investigation, a source in the Dominican Republic tells SI.com.
An official announcement is expected later next week. Sano, a 16-year-old shortstop, is expected to receive the largest signing bonus -- rumored to be north of $3 million -- of a position player from the baseball-rich island. At 6-foot-3, some believe Sano would be best suited at third base or in the outfield. He boasts power to all fields and a solid throwing arm.
The Pirates, Orioles and several other American League teams are said to be interested in signing Sano.
This is a quote from SI posted on July 18th. If it is correct, why is his age still a question?
Considering recent Latin American developments regarding MLB certified prospects' ages, identities, blood and urine samples and payoffs, can anything about these players ever be verified with certainity?
One thing is certain. Scott Boras must be praying that someone gives Sano $7 mil. If some team pays an unverified 16 year old $7 mil, isn't Strasberg worth at least 3 times that?

i think JJ Hardy is going to be fantastic.

Yes, I really did suggest Erbe, Joseph, and Scott for Hardy. If Erbe is untouchable, and Arrieta is untouchable, then who exactly IS touchable, and available to trade for high end players like Hardy and Adrian Gonzalez, should he truly be available?
Is Erby proven? No. Lots of pitchers with "dominating front end rotation stuff" don't pan out. I say deal from the organization's one true strength while it is still a strength. Is the deal I suggested overpaying for Hardy? Perhaps a bit, but remember also I said I'd only do the deal if I could negotiante a 4-6 year extension on his contract during the 72 hour window the league usually grants for such things.
Congrats to Felix. I'm glad that he can now go down in the history books with (Aubrey), Cal and Brooks.
And I also agree, Scioscia needs to get over it. Can you imagine if Guerrero or Juan Rivera or Figgins on the Angels hit for the cycle last night? They would have shown just as much emotion, and they haven't gone through the offensive struggles and the career struggles like Felix has.
All he did was smack his hands together. I've seen plenty of players do that before on just normal clutch hits.
Scioscia needs to calm down. I can't imagine how he reacts when Joba Chamberlain pitches.
Sorry but Scott's not going anywhere, I totally agree with what Flo said. Taking him out of the lineup will be bad because then the power numbers will most def. be down. He is in a slump yes, but he's going to get out of it soon. I really feel like last night's game was a break through for everyone on the team, the players that play everyday, players in slumps, and players that don't get as much playing time, even though Pie hit for the cycle and had a break out, but it's only one game, let's see what else Pie can bring, we'll see how things play out but Scott's not going anywhere, and if he does, the fans will miss the power.
