Don't look for Jones anytime soon
X-rays taken on Adam Jones' left ankle were negative, but he's in a lot of pain at the moment and he figures to be out of the lineup for a while.
I can't define "a while," but it's hard to imagine him rushing back. The Orioles have an extra outfielder in Jeff Fiorentino, and Felix Pie is swinging a hot bat. Jones can take his time.
Manager Dave Trembley doesn't know whether it's a high ankle sprain, which is more serious. That's an important detail.
"We'll have a better idea how long he's doing to be out tomorrow," Trembley said. "He did have an X-ray and the X-ray is negative, but I know it's a pretty good sprain. It was a pretty good one."
Which is pretty bad for Jones.

Get healthy and ready for next season...No sense in messing it up even worse.
Great trade by Andrew btw....I absolutely love Adam Jones.
I like Jones, but I wonder if we might get stronger as a team by trading him.
The Rangers seem to have what we need. A power hitting 1b.
I wonder if Jones and (Snyder or Guthrie) for Smoak and Feliz (who was just rated slightly behind Tillman and Matusz on BA's prospects and has pitched wonderfully out of the pen.)
I think that trade is a fair one, and helps both teams. The Jones-Smoak exchange is the centerpiece, but I think Jones has proven it at the ML level and Smoak has not.
Doug,
Interesting trade proposal. My first thought was, "Trade Jones? What the ... ?" but it has some validity. I realize he is a cornerstone of the franchise, and I would like to think he will be here for a long time, but he could sure bring a lot in the right deal.
My only concern about your offer is that Smoak has yet to play in the majors, while Jones is an All Star. If we do trade him to the Rangers, we better get Smoak, Feliz, and a whole lot more. It may not be a Bedard-for-five or a Tejada-for-five deal, but we'll need to get a significant chunk in return.
WHo cares if hes out id rather see pie in center! Jones hasnt done anything at the plate in two months!
Doug, WHAT? "I like Jones, but I wonder if we might get stronger as a team by trading him." Jones is in his early 20s. He was the lone Orioles All-Star rep this year. He is in his second full year of the majors. There is nothing but an upside for this guy, and you want to trade him? Please!
TO THE MORONS WHO WANT TO TRADE AWAY A 22 YR ALL STAR C.F. IN HIS 2ND YAER. THAT'S WHAT YOU ALL ARE....MORONS!
TRADE ADAM JONES??? All of the sudden you would rather see Pie in center instead of Jones?! MY goodness, I know we have been losing, but lord have mercy, you people are delusional!! Roch, whatever these guys are smoking, I want to try some of it.
jones is a great talent, but all that talent isn't worth jack if it sits on the bench half the year. if he gets hurt this much now how's he going to be 4 or 5 years from now, a could have been! that's what we need.
I am starting to wonder if Jones isnt injury prone. Last year he was out for a while. This year, he has had injuries and now the ankle.
Jone can only hope that they shut him down for the rest of the year before his average goes to 260. Batting 228 since may 30th. Over 300 ab's and everybody keeps making excuses for him that he will make the necessary adjustments.
Doug,
You're right, looks like a fair trade on paper. But I would rather wait to get a power hitting first baseman through free agency, even if that means waiting until 2011. The Jones/Bedard trade has Robinson/Pappas written all over it. We got a ton for Bedard and he has done nothing for the Mariners. What would have happened if we traded Frank Robinson after his second year? There were better power hitting first baseman then than Boog. We have an absolute gem and he should finish his career in an Orioles uniform.
Sorry, call me a moron too if you want, I haven't been that impressed with Jones this year, either. Who cares if he was an All Star. Coming from the Orioles that isn't saying very much really. They had to pick someone and noone really stood out at the time compared to other ML'rs. As for Jones, great start, terrible since. Like Roch says, he overswings every time. I understand slumps, but he's been pretty bad at the plate for most of this year now. I hope he does well for an entire year next year.
Another delicate, fragile, up-and-coming superstar outfielder. How many does that make for us now?
Wow. people on here like Pie? and they want to trade Jones?
Wake up people...or become yankee or boston fans...we have the strongest outfield right now. (Well not at the moment with Adam out) but earlier with Markakis, Jones, and Reimold. We were taking the Yankees and Red Sox ESPN time away, becaus they began to notice us. Just because the guys go through hitting slumps doesn't meant that we should trade for someone else. Plus those three guys are 24 (Jones), and two 25 year olds (Markakis and Reimold, who later in the year will both be 26)
Pie sure he has been hitting a lot better than last year and earlier in the season, and granted he is a fast runner (takes him .0001 to do his homerun lap) But you have to look at the BIG picture if you want this team to move farther into October. We need Pie to learn to target the ball better in the field, hit the cut off man (when need be), he also can't always be told where to position himself in the field (example friday nights game) He still needs work. I think throwing him back in the farm system for a while will get him better.
On a good note Welcome back Sarfate! Missed him. But will miss Adam "Bubble Man" Jones a lot more.
I would trade Jones for David Wright. The Mets are in a real shambles: no money (Wilpons the owners are real estate people who have lost a ton), they have cancelled Fall Instructionals (cost about $300,000), they have players who are making a lot of money and are injured, they have big holes in their ML line-up (will not catch the Phillies) and they have a bad MiL farm system.
Wright is having a decent year but is way down in his HR numbers and he has three years left on his deal with a club option for a fourth year (he is worth more than what they are paying, but, he still has $39 million plus $16 million for the option). Beltran is a great player, but, he also is expensive - Jones could either be his back-up and play a corner OF position or he could allow the Mets to trade Beltran for a big return.
Here's the deal I would propose: Jones CF, Bell 3B, Wigginton 3B/1B/Util, one of second tier pitchers (D. Hernandez, S. Johnson, Bergesen, Beato), L. Lebron (power reliever), and one high upside player (Florimon SS, Avery OF). If needed, throw in Turner 2B or another pitcher or high upside player. Also, the Orioles should also get back Reese Havens SS.
The Mets get a young, All-Star OF, a future 3B, a decent ML 3B/1B/Util player (particularly in the NL) who will fill in at those positions until Bell and Davis (Mets 1B prospect) are ready, then be a fine Util/PH, a good #3 starter, a young power reliever and either a SS or OF with a high ceiling. Florimon is now in AA and is ML ready defensively, needs some time on his hitting but improved dramatically this year. Avery is an 80 runner and in his draft year was rated the best HS athlete and held his own in first year full season ball in Delmarva. The Orioles get their middle of the order bat, four time All-Star, Gold Glove 3B who is only 26 and signed for four years, and a very good prospect in Havens.
Bryan,
I suppose I don't see Jones in the same category as Frank Robinson. He seems to get injured frequently and go into prolonged slumps and lacks Robinson's power. If we didn't have a glut of potential outfielders I'd say keep him, but if he gets us a power hitting 1B and a potential starting pitcher I think it is best for the team. You're not going to get better trading poor players. The Sherill for Bell swap is an example. We could really use Sherill now. He's pitching phenomenally for the Dodgers, but AM took the risk for improving the team overall long term.
Now Jones was an All Star but so was Sherill last year. Jones is a good ball player, but I'm not sure a top five elite player. I think trading him for a great package like we did with Bedard helps the team. Smoak would give us the power bat we need, and Feliz was just behind Tillman and Matusz and ahead of Arrieta in BA prospect ratings.
We may even be able to pick up a stop gap 3B in the trade until Bell is ready.
I know Jones is young with promise, and maybe it's me watching his struggles at the plate in the second half and his injuries that concern me, but I'm not sure he'd finish his career in an Oriole uniform anyway. As soon as FA hits my guess is he goes somewhere else. I'd like to get a nice package now.
Regardless, we're going to have improve at 1B next year, and I'm still not sure our Starting pitching is strong enough to compete. I doubt we'll pay big bucks to get a solid pitcher and AM seems to lean toward young promising minor leaguers than FA's. Feliz looks quite promising. The Rangers have a good farm system and I think they'd be good trade partners.
As to Pie I'm not sold, and in fact the guy drive me nuts in the first half, but I must admit his performance in the second half merits another look next year. He's outperformed Jones and may actually outhit him at this pace.
Jones may have been the all star rep. But he hasn't done any thing since.
Some times things come too easy. It is harder to stay in the BIGS than it
is getting there. After the all star game he seems to run out ground balls
like you should . Remember here is a guy who almost got thrown out from
right field after not running hard after a base hit. That was yhe scouting
report around the league.
hers my take on jones. way to much hype for what he's produced. appears to be injury prone and is protected far too easily by tremblay on what appears to be minor injuries. hes talked about as a future leader of this franchise and yet cant stay on the field. guaranteed he loses a minimum of 7-10 games with an ankle with a negative mri. this is j.d.drew in the making with a manager helping him develope that way.
I hope Jones gets his Knee better and comes out hitting next season.
To the people talking about trading Jones....you make me sick!
