Post-game Trembley
| | Comments (39)

I'll give full credit to manager Dave Trembley for keeping his cool while the hallway outside of the interview room sounded like the ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese.

Dave Trembley talks with the media after the O's 10-2 loss to the Yankees

The players' wives, girlfriends, children and assorted family members gather near the clubhouse entrance next to the room where reporters sit in rows of chairs and cameramen set up behind them. Little kids were screaming and laughing, a closed door unable to block their high-pitched squeals, as Trembley walked in, froze in his tracks, finally sat down, took a few deep breaths and tried not to burst at the seams.

Asked how tough it's been to match up with the Yankees this season, Trembley replied: "It's about as tough as me sitting here and having to listen to all those people out there and me sitting in here and trying to be professional, which we are all trying to do. But the lack of professionalism that's going on in that hall, it's not easy for anybody. But I think we all have to handle it the very best that we can and give credit where credit is due.

"They have a tremendous team. And we tried to do everything that we possibly can and our guys give everything they can and it just has not measured up and allowed us to get a win."

The Orioles set a season high by using eight pitchers. A few of them were actually good. Jason Berken held the Yankees to one run over 5 1/3 innings. Left-handers Alberto Castillo and Mark Hendrickson did their jobs, getting key outs against left-handed hitters. Danys Baez threw seven of his nine pitches for strikes in a scoreless inning.

I'll resist the temptation to stop there.

Kam Mickolio allowed two runs on two hits, and walked two batters, in one-third of an inning. Jim Johnson didn't record an out and was charged with five runs, allowing three hits and walking two. Dennis Sarfate let two inherited runners score and was charged with two runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.

"Mickolio looked rusty for me, and that's very uncharacteristic of J.J.," Trembley said. "A leadoff walk and then it kind of happens after that."

When I asked whether Sarfate's issues also can be blamed on rust, Trembley shot down that theory as if it was a passing duck in an arcade game.

"I don't believe that," he said. "Sarfate has worked very hard. He just doesn't look like the same guy as last year. Plain and simple. He does not look like the same guy as last year."

The Orioles are a season-high 26 games below .500. The last few months are looking way too familiar, except the starters are much younger.

Tonight's game aged me about 10 years.

It's hard for me to get too concerned with the outcomes of the games down the stretch. The main things you want to see are improvement from the important guys like Tillman, Matusz, Wieters, and Reimold. Pie is proving that he can be a good LF, and Berken has proven himself to be a capable starter, and I think a very good reliever in the near future. Keep your head up Roch because next year is gonna be one of those special years that makes you glad you stuck it out. Keep pushin' on!

Barry said:

Roch--Why has Hendrickson's role been reduced to getting a key out against one lefthanded hitter (Hinske)?

From starter to "swingman" to situational lefty?

Unlike most of the current Oriole pitchers, Hendrickson has had some success over the Yankees in his career.

He looked pretty good striking out Hinske tonight.

Tonight, it was if Trembley, knowing he had the expanded roster, felt he may as well trot them all out.

Johnson simply didn't have it. That happens.

Why would Trembley say Mickolio looked "rusty" when the word is that his arm is tired? Does that make any sense?

Sarfate, you are right, may be "rusty," too. Trembley says Sarfate doesn't look the same.

My analysis of Sarfate is that he has been a guy who can light up the radar gun. He also is personable. I have not seen much evidence that he is a pitcher.

BigBill said:

"...sounded like the ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese."

I'll laugh at that one and call it a night.

Tom said:

Roch, if it were not for bad luck we wouldnt have any. This scenario plays out almost every game for the birds. You have a better inside than the rest of us. In your opinion is there really light at the end of this dark dismal tunnel?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm more encouraged than I've been in years because of the young talent. They had to rebuild the farm system and improve their presence internationally. But an entire plan hinges on these kids staying healthy and being the real deal. That's hardly a sure thing. - Roch

Chuck said:

Actually, I think Sarfate is pitching the exact same way he was last year. Its not a rust issue...the guy has no movement on his pitches, whatsoever. He got to the big leagues with a fastball that minor-leaguers can't catch up to. But in the bigs, hitters easily catch up to those fastballs that don't move.

I thought Berken wasn't being monitored on an innings-pitched basis like Tillman and Matusz? Anyone ask why he didn't pitch further into the game, or why Hendrickson, a long reliever coming out of the pen in the 6th pitches to only one batter? I mean, seriously, Trembley has no idea how to manage a pitching staff. At this point of the season guys need to pitch themselves out of the games due to bad performance. Don't reward a guy with the bench after he goes 5.1 innings allowing 1 run.

Officially don't like this guy very much anymore. Hoping for an improved coaching staff (save Kranny and Crow) next year and the years to come. At some point wins and losses force themselves into the issue, and there aren't going to be many more wins this year if Trembley keeps doing stuff like this.

Ryan said:

Roch-

He doesn't look like the same guy as last year? What, when he gave up just 2 runs an inning istead of 4? When he walked leadoff hitters with extreme prejudice? I don't understand?

These guys are NOT major league pitchers. How is he supposed to match up? When the young guys are handling it, he pulls them. Then he is forced to rely on minor league type guys.

The way to beat Sabathia....strike early...PUT THE PROPER GUYS IN THE PROPER SPOTS IN THE LINEUP. Score 3 runs...........Hold them... have realy pitchers.

Jim Johnson gets shelled by every team in our division now, because there is a scouting book on him and he is not adjusting.
He just doen't have the kind of control needed to close games.
This team is in big trouble. Bell falling all the way down to 270's at Bowie means he is 2 or more years away. There are no 3rd baseman in the FA market....1b either as far as thats concerned.

So, with this line-up and this bullpen, we will be having the same conversations next year.

So long Roch. I can't take anymore. I'll see you after the season is over. I don't want to log any more ratings to MASN. My 1 might not show up on the Neilson but, hey, it is a matter of principle. I go to probably 20+ games a year, and watch every other one, til about now, I have 2 old Markakis jerseys, 1 new one and 1 new Weiters. I got posters, stickers, bobbleheads, foam fingers, pennant flags, etc. We just don't get out from ownership what we put in.

After reading all of these posts from the last few blogs - I'm getting extremely annoyed at the amount of people that post on here lacking simple baseball knowledge.

I'll try to be short and sweet to those that have CONSTANTLY cried and complained about the Orioles play and management.

This team was picked by NUMEROUS baseball scouts and analysts all over the country to be THE WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL before this season started.

I repeat, THE WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL. Even worse than the Nationals.

And from a coaching standpoint, none of us have a clue what DT is going through. You're thrown four rookie starters, very few veterans and an inexperienced bullpen and told "Make it work."

How can you people constantly sit on here and cry day after day at the mistakes that are made and the losing given the product we have on the field? Some of you just don't get it.

I hate to name names but man it really does make me wonder if some the posters on here have ever even hit a ball off a tee. I'm actually appalled that these are Oriole fans.

Please the Orioles and other low budget teams should go on strike what the Yankees and red sox do, is just cheating in any other sport thats why people are starting to hate this league. That is why the NFL is much more popular because teams can't buy championships. The Yankees are a disgrace to professional sports just like Bud Seliq is; Seliq is the only person who wants the yankees to win they way they do it has ruined baseball and the more I see the Yankees and there pay roll the more I hate this league. The Orioles would never have lost for 12 seasons if there was a salary cap or they would have had a fighting chance.

the Orioles sign and send out rookies and journeyman against a team that buys hall of famers no wonder they don't match up

Sam said:

I just watched Trembly on the after-game video. Um, excuse me, but when he says, "They've got the total package," and "They've got guys over there doin' it night after night," I just couldn't help thinking, "Oh, right, doin' what, exactly? Smearing? Popping?" I won't be more explicit than that.

Barry said:

Oh, I see there's no chance then that you were one of the youngsters bouncing back and forth from crying to laughing when Trembley was trying to talk.

Nice cover, Roch.

Roch - I'm sorry for posting this twice. I got caught up in one of Brummies rants and I forgot that I was reading an old post.

Brummie - Your Dad pays for season tix and drives to Baltimore from HARCO 81 times a year. But won't pay $50 a month to watch the other 81 in his living room? I don't think so buddy.....I think you really stepped in it this time.

I just watched the video - POOR DAVE! There is a man "on the edge"! If he was a Lion rather than a beaten MANager - those screamin kids in his hallway mighta gotten a reson to sit down and shut up. He knows his team is no match for those Damn Yankees! Look at their line up/team and go position by position and compare OURS VS theirs and tell me right now which position do we have an equal or (HAHAHAHAH) superior player? No wonder T REX looked at the O's and looked at the Yankees and liked to hper extended his elbow reaching for the pen to sign. Heck I suspect he would have bitten off the tip of his finger to sign if he couldn't find a pen before they changed their mind. Now all 180 Million $ being equal where would you wanna play? For the champs or the chumps?? NO real choice is it? Let's put it another way - who is having more fun on the field day in and day out game after game - T REX or Brian Roberts?! Not even close. Hear is what I have said before - you got Predators and you got "PREY" guess what we are, the O's? Big dogs gotta eat and we are the ALPO! SIGGHHH! POR DAVE, POOR Orioles, Poor fans! SIGGGGHHH!!

26 games under .500 yet somehow this team is going in the right direction? All Andy Macphail has done since he has been here is cut payroll and make Angelos more money. And it will be more of the same this offseason. It's clear the Orioles are overmatched against legitimate contenders and unless there is an infusion of talent from outside the organization, that's not going to change. You can tell me how great all these young arms are going to be, but the fact of the matter is they could turn out to be Matt Riley and Rocky Copinger. Matt Messiah could turn out to be Greg Zaun instead of Joe Mauer. And all the guys in the minor leagues that Macphail has "stockpiled" Josh Bell, Brandon Waring, Snyder, etc. haven't proven anything. It's a sad state when the fate of your franchise rests on the backs of a bunch of unproven kids who may or may not turn out to be decent big league ballplayers.

I'm not a huge DT fan and he certainly has made questionable moves but how anyone can place this debacle only on his shoulders is beyond me. Joe Girardi (or anyone you can name) could not win with this bunch.NO #4 hitter all year and only 2 players that could make most major league teams starting lineups (Roberts and Markakis and even they would be backups on the Yankees and Red Sox), with no power at 1st and 3rd and with a bench that is a joke---how could ANYONE win with this team. DT played with what he was given and kept a stiff upper lip...... what else could he do.I LOVE Earl Weaver but he would have lost with these guys too. Earl would never tolerate the lack of hustle nor would he continuously played Scott ( who has proven that he really is platoon player and to play him against lefties is a disservice to him )..The same can be said of Adam Jones who after a SUPER 1st half was embarrassing to watch flail away the 2nd half. But who else could DT play ? There was no one on the bench.......

Hooves said:

Tonight was the first chance I've had to watch Mickolio pitch (I live in CT and had to watch on YES). Trembley says he looked rusty, but I thought his mechanics looked outright terrible. He was stepping practically towards the Yankee dugout and then throwing across his body, and he was all over the place as a result. Is that uncharacteristic of him, or does he always throw that way? I have no baseline for comparison.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not always, but his mechanics get out of whack. Maybe it's a 6 foot 9 thing. He was a lot more consistent until last night. - Roch

I have watched Orioles games on TV since Gus Triandos was catching Billy Loes and Al Pilarcik (my fav) was shagging flies in RF. I cannot ever remember turning to another station like I did last night, for the second straight night, when the unraveling began.

Glad that America's Got Talent had more talent than the bullpen. The decision to remove Berken was horrible. Did DT make that move on his own, or did Kranny advise?

The swoon is in progress, once again. Most players look as if they have no belief that they can beat good teams; it's written in the confused/befuddled look that they have most of the time. They go through the motions; and most times, their natural responses to batted balls rise up, and they make good plays in the field --- sometimes spectacular. Especially the outfield assists (but how many times do they miss cutoffs?), but then again, they get a lot of these b/c they have a lot of runners on second base trying to score on singles.

And their approach to plate appearances shows them to be lacking in a plan. The Yankees had a plan last night as they do every night: like Buck said, look for their pitch until two strikes, but the Os didn't have a clue.

Go ahead and give Sabathia the credit --- that's the cop out that they use too many times. Seems as if every club has 2 great pitchers who confound the lineup. Never hear the Rays, Sox, Yankees, or even the Jays moan about that like DT does.

Bobby Ballgame said:

Roch,

I know that you can't answer this directly, but there are a lot of questions at the Trembley press conference that begin with "Dave, how tough is it..." Can someone please get the word to the Press Corps that no one cares how "tough" it is for a baseball manager to manage a losing team.

Other questions were similarly weak. Nothing challenging. No one asked him what he meant by "Berken went as far as he could". No one asked why he batted Pie so low in the lineup. no one asked why he didn't have B-Rob bunt over Pie after his leadoff single with a guy like Sabathia on the mound and every run precious.

Is the reporting corps so worried about getting on DT's bad side that they avoid tough questions? Why have a press conference where softballs are tossed and the usual answers given?

And why didn't SOMEONE duck a head into the hall and tell the kids to BE QUIET? Does anyone get tough anywhere in this operation?

The O's have lost Sherrell, a good closer, lost Bedard, Mora is very good but isnt staying, had a shot at T-Rex but he didnt see a future, the O's have a good core of players but I bet 2 are traded in a year. Angelo is not building a winning team he is just keeping a team on the field. DT is working in what management allows him to have. The Twins compete, Tampa plays to an empty stadium but has a competitive team. MLB should take teh team away from Angelo and find an owner that wants to win.

I could manage the Yankees. The Orioles are trying to grow the whole team. No team has ever done this. What scares me is that we are relying so heavily on these young starters. We need to spend some money. Show the fans the O's organization wants to win. Baseball, does need to do something about the money the yankees spend on players. It is ridiculous. They have everything going for them this year. They are clicking. Last few years, they didnt, although, they still spent bundles. The game of baseball is not as popular as it use to be and we just played one of the reasons why. Yeah, Yankees fans love it and find nothing wrong with it. They think, well we are paying all this tax to other low market teams, it makes it better. But, that only helps a few. The Yankees can afford it. But, to be fair to Trembley, Dont you think the yankees would be 30 some games over .500 with Trembley as their manager? I do. Trembley doesnt have the horses and may never have them. No, I dont agree with some of his moves. But, I am sure New york doesnt always agree with dumb a** Girardi either. What team would you rather manage??

Steve J said:

How many times does a relief pitcher have to let up 2 or more runs in an appearance before the manager stops saying, "...that's very uncharacterstic of him..."???

Sooner or later, it IS VERY characteristic of him...

This has been a very eye opening series for the Orioles, from top to bottom. I hope they learn from this. Next year will be just as difficult.

Hey there jackdunn'sbaby,

My life in Towson included many trips to Memorial Stadium to sit in the 75-cent seats. My big brother and I even had upper deck season tickets one season.

My 83-year old Mom in Ocean City still watches the games and is equally as frustrated with this lack of a competitive team.

All of us 5-decade fans have been pretty patient with rebuilding, and we do see a better team coming, but all we'd like to see now is a reasonable challenge to the big guys.

I only went to one Os-Sox game the past few years. The Os killed the Sox and it was fun begging their fans not to leave in the 8th inning, but that was a rare opportunity.

Maybe we need another flake like Jackie Brandt or a solid leader like Frank or Brooks. Anything to shake up what looks like apathy.

The O's were beaten into submission by a club that has the killer instinct. All Trembley needed to do was acknowledge this fact.

As a club, the O's certainly don't have that focus. Are the players responsible for that or have they not been taught how to go about it?

Bobby Ballgame said:

So, by Doug's logic that since the Os were "...picked by NUMEROUS baseball scouts and analysts all over the country to be THE WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL before this season started...", fans should just plunk down their $50-80/person (tickets, parking, and food) game after game, knowing that the team is expected to be bad, and not be a little distressed that they play as they do sometimes? They ARE professionals in MLB.

And many posters give credit for good play, too. That goes unnoticed by many. There's not a lot of that, since there are not a lot of wins. Yankee blogs carry criticisms of that team, too, ya know. Try looking at the Sox blogs!

And some who critique the team are not to be cast in the same category as the venomous ones --- you know who they are.

Some of us actually did play --- city leagues, college, American Legion. Never got paid a nickel. These guys are paid handsomely. Fans don't expect a first-place team.
