Looking back at the 2009 Bowie Baysox season with Brad Komminsk
Today we continue our look back at O's minor league teams from the 2009 season with a feature on Double-A Bowie of the Eastern League with comments from Baysox manager Brad Komminsk.
Komminsk has been in the O's organization for two years. His 2008 team went 84-58, made the playoffs and he was named Eastern League manager of the year. Last season, Bowie was 3rd in the Southern Division at 73-69 and a wild-card contender until the season's final days.
The Baysox were 7th in the league batting .256 and 2nd in ERA at 3.44.
Bowie has won 229 games over the last three seasons, its best three-year run ever.
Today we focus on a couple of Bowie position players, later we'll get the skippers thoughts on Bowie pitchers.
(All stats in bold are from Bowie only and all quotes in this article are from Komminsk).
Komminsk's take on the 2009 season:
"It was a good year I thought. Some of the guys that were supposed to do well did. Snyder played really well for us and went up to Triple-A. Matusz and Berken were with us and went up to the big leagues. It was a successful year for us."
On seeing a lot of talent at Bowie over two years:
"There's been some pretty good talent floating through Bowie. The fans of Baltimore have seen some home grown talent that played and pitched very well for them. Hopefully it will be that way for years to come.
Miguel Abreu: .290-4-45 with 31 2B and 25 SB
The 25-year-old Abreu just completed his 5th season with the O's. He was drafted in round 28 in 2005 out of Puerto Rico. He finished 6th in the EL in steals, 7th in hits and tied for 8th in doubles. He was named Top Star of the All-Star game.
"He had a good year. He's extremely unconventional at the plate. He doesn't see a lot of pitches. But he finds a way to put the barrel on the ball. He's athletic with some range at second base going to his left, but I see him as more of an outfielder myself. Maybe more of a super-utility kind of guy.
"He can run and steal a base but he's still learning the game and learning what to do in certain situations. But he's a high-energy guy and fun to manage."
Why do you see him as better in the outfield? "I think he's a way better outfielder than he'll ever be an infielder, for me. He doesn't go great up the middle. As an outfielder he gets big jumps on the ball, he has huge range and he's fast and throws well. I think he can be a solid outfielder, that's my take."
What about his lack of walks? "The only way you'll get him to increase his walks is to (make him) take four pitches. He's not one of those guys that feels comfortable there, if it leaves the pitchers' hand, he's swinging at it. It's like Vladimir Guerrero without the power. He's successful with it. He's never going to walk (much).
"He's a unique guy. You tell him to take pitches and he can't, it's not in his comfort level. He does get good pitches to hit and put in play hard somewhere. He doesn't walk or strikeout much, he puts the ball in play and makes guys throw him out."
Can pitchers take advantage of that lack of plate discipline at higher levels? "I would think it would (be a problem) but until it happens it's hard to put a limit on a guy. He got better as the year went on. Until they put him there and he can't do it, I've gotta say Miggy can do it until he proves me wrong."
Josh Bell: .289-9-24 in 33 games with a .917 OPS
Bell, who turned 23 in November, was acquired in the George Sherrill trade and finished the season with Bowie. He is the possible future O's third baseman.
Before the deal, in 94 games at Double-A Chatanooga, he hit .296-11-52 and Baseball America named him the 10th best prospect in the Southern League.
Bell is a switch hitter but has struggled in his career when batting from the right side. At Chatanooga he hit .212 with no right-handed homers.
"I like him, he has some tools. His swing was long at times, but I know he did well in the fall league. He hits balls as far as anybody, including Nolan Reimold or Luke Scott. He's got some tremendous power.
"His defense was okay, he played decent at third. Probably needs to work on that a little bit. He's a better hitter left handed than right. That's where it's at for him."
Should he give up switch hitting ? "I would. He doesn't want to hit right handed, so I'd just leave him left handed and let him go. He doesn't want to work on it and his strength is his left side. What's the big deal? You can hit a lefty from the left side. I think it would be a huge plus for him just to stay on the left side. That's not for me to decide though."
What are the issues from the right side ? "I just think he's so much better of a left handed hitter. I'll just say he'd rather hit from the left side. The ball comes off the bat better, he's just a better left handed hitter and he focuses more on that."
Can he stay at third base on defense? "No reason why he can't. I liked him over there, he was okay. He'll get better too. I would keep him at third absolutely. He did fine for us."
The Figueroa brothers
Danny: .319-2-24 in 78 games with a .444 OBP
Paco: .305-0-28 with .828 OPS
The twins are 26 years old and played at the University of Miami. Danny, who played CF, was taken in round 43 in 2005. Paco, who played 2B and 3B, was selected in round nine in 2005.
Paco went 17 for 34 and hit .500 for Spain in September in the World Cup, leading the entire 20-nation tourney in batting. Both twins have had numerous injuries in their career which has held them back at times.
"I love the guys, they are great guys and smart players. But you have to keep them on the field. That's been their biggest downfall. It's hard to know what's possible if they can't play 130 games.
"But they have good strike zones, both can hit and play defense, plus steal a base. They have to prove they can stay on the field."
Have the injuries been bad luck or is something else at work? "I don't know it's hard to say. Danny had some freak things happen to him. He slid into third and dislocated his finger when an umpire was out of position. It seems like anything that can happen, will happen to the guys. I lot of it is not their fault.
"I'd love to see them stay healthy to see what numbers they could put up. That is what its going to take to see what they can do. They are great kids, fun to have around and help you win games, without question. There is no way you can't like these kids."
Jonathan Tucker: .265-1-36 with 31 SB and 71 runs
Tucker, the O's 20th round pick in 2004, finished 5th in the league in steals and tied for 7th in runs. The 26-year-old Tucker played mostly LF for Bowie. He was also in the All-Star game.
"Tuck is a good player, he's solid. He's a very good outfielder and could play some infield if you need him to. He played left and made some unbelievable plays. We could have easily played him in center if we didn't have Danny (Figueroa) out there.
"He's a good little player that can steal a base or draw a walk to help you win. He put himself on the map with his defense. He's got a hose and can throw guys out, he's got great range and is athletic.
"He's a good teammate, the guys love him. He comes to play every day and keeps the guys loose. He was a leader for us, definitely."
Coming soon - Brad Komminsk talks about Bowie Baysox pitching, plus an interview with Brandon Erbe with an update on his injured finger.

Steve-
OK. It's out. MLBTR is reporting that the Red Sox are working very hard to acquire Adrian Gonzales.
Macphail can NOT let that happen.
He can say he doesn't pay attention to what the other teams are doing, but he better start.
If the Sox get AG, then I don't care how many prospects we draft, or what we do, we will NEVER compete in the AL East. It will be another 12 seasons.
The O's HAVE to step up here and block this. They don't even have a choice.
I know Macphail is going to the commissioners office in 2 years, but I pray he doesn't kill any chance we have of winning before he does.
All of what he has done up to this point will all be wasted if the Sox get Gonzales after getting Lackey and Cameron.
There would be no point to even playing the games anymore, when you look at how loaded the Yanks and Red Sox are, one of those 2 teams will win it every year REGARDLESS of what we do.
This isn't even about money. To lock him up AFTER the 2011 season, but for the next 2 years, its just 10 million total. Its just about trading prospects. HE DOESN"T HAVE A CHOICE if the goal is to win in Baltimore again. THERE IS NO CHOICE STEVE.
All Macphail has to do is pull the trigger.
I don't even see that the O's have an option. Unless we want to keep going 3-15 against those 2, which the franchise can't handle because the last of the fans will go. If the Sox get AG, we might as well just move the team, cuz we won't have a chance of winning. If winning is the point, and we don't want to wait another 10 years, we HAVE to intervene here. Again, I don't see how anyone could even have a different opinion.
I pray to GOD that Macphail gets it. This is a MUST. This isn't even an opinion. I can't stress it enough.
Steve,
Good stuff.
Looking forward to his assessment of : L.Lebron / W.Perez
- is it too far fetch to assume one of them will be pitching in Baltimore in 2010
Thanks

They both have a chance, especially Lebron I think.....Steve
Steve - So how long do you think the O's will keep Bell batting from the right side if he doesn't like it and his numbers aren't good? Seems like I would dump that idea in a heartbeat.

The organization still seems to believe in him as a switch hitter. It was interesting that Komminsk came right out and said he should give it up, though......Steve
I love reading this stuff. Great reporting. True Oriole fans really appreciate it.

Thanks for saying that....Steve
Wow...Ryan you need to step back from the ledge.
First, it is an opinion...yours...and while you are certainly entitled to it, I'd say you are being more than a bit dramatic.
I don't agree at all and the idea that our FO should make moves to "block" our competition is really out there. You don't even know what the Sox would be giving up yet. If we could get AG for a reasonable package of prospects, then I am all for it, but the idea that the O's have to do this or all is lost is a little to over the top for me.
Steve,
Well the Os have one thing going for them, Ryan isn't their GM. I didn't even read all his post "MacPhail can NOT let that happen" was all I needed to see.
Baldy
Here is a great Q & A from an ESPN baseball chat today:
"Grant (VA)
A blog for the Baltimore Sun said that the Orioles should make a run for A-Gon. First, could the O's put together a package to swing the deal. Second, do you think the O's should try to land a big bat to compete in the AL East.
Jerry Crasnick (4:45 PM)
Grant, Adrian Gonzalez only works as the missing piece for a contending team with a deep farm system and a lot of prospects to trade. That's why Boston is a potential fit. The Orioles aren't even a .500 club right now. And to land Gonzalez, they'd have to give up so much young talent, the team around him would stink. It just doesn't make sense."
Why is it that some people just can't seem to graps this?
just to go off topic but everyone is talking about signing a hurt pitcher but no one is considering signing jon garland. we have the money sign him for one year with an option get a closer.sign blalock for third then we can keep him as a utility player when bell comes up he plays 1st ,3rd,dh.also i can see delgado for one year or garko even atkins at first.and i can see going after a outfielder like bay or halliday and put remoild at first gotta do something.
Brad is a no BS kind of guy,he tells it like it is. If they have to can Trembley,I'd like to see him get the managing job.I don't really se that much star power in the O's org.Waring could be an "old' rookie..I mean there's a couple pitchers that could be effective down the road but I don't see much in the way of position players.Hobgood could be another patented O's first round bust. They'd be better off trying to convert him to a closer.
It appears from Brad Komminsk's comments that Josh Bell is at least a year away from the majors, and that he is just about an average fielder at third.
Chad-
Ok. If the Sox get AG, I'll bet you 100 bucks the O's don't make the playoffs for at least a decade.
