Jeremy Guthrie tells the media what he did to cool off the Red Sox hitters in the O's win
Guthrie improves to 4-13 with an ERA of 4.35. This was just his second career win over Boston. He entered with a record of 1-7 and 4.62 ERA in 15 starts. Guthrie had just one win since the end of May. Jarrod Saltalamachia hit a two-run homer in the fifth for the only Boston runs. Jim Johnson retired the top of the Boston order in the eighth and before the Orioles turned a 3-2 lead into a 6-2 edge in the last of the inning. Derrek Lee's two-run homer made it 5-2 and Mark Reynolds followed with a solo shot, number 21 on the year, to put the O's up four runs. Reynolds had ended an 11-game RBI drought with a run-scoring double in the second that gave the O's a 1-0 lead and a Nolan Reimold RBI grounder made it 2-0. Matt Wieters knocked in a run an inning later off losing pitcher Kyle Weiland. Boston entered with the best record in the majors in July at 12-2 and best road record in MLB at 30-19. In the series finale Wednesday afternoon at 12:35, Jake Arrieta (9-6, 5.10) pitches for the Orioles against Andrew Miller (3-1, 5.68).
