This award was voted on by Williams' fellow managers. The Nationals skipper received four votes, with Cardinals manager Mike Matheny getting two votes and Marlins manager Mike Redmond receiving one vote. Apparently a few NL managers' ballots got lost in the mail. In his first year as a big league manager, Williams led the Nats to a 96-66 record and a NL East title. The Nationals finished a whopping 17 games ahead of the Braves and Mets, who tied for second place in the division. That 17-game margin between first- and second-place teams was the largest in the majors. This comes after the Nationals missed the playoffs in 2013, going 86-76 and finishing 10 games behind the Braves. The Angels' Mike Scioscia won the Sporting News American League Manager of the Year award.
