He may have pitched poorly on Sunday vs. Minnesota, but if you are looking for an Oriole to step up and take the blame for a loss, Jake Arrieta did just that in the O's clubhouse minutes after a 10-4 defeat vs. the Twins. "Honestly it's pretty embarrassing to go out there and not be able to give your team a quality start. I prepare myself too well to allow these kind of things to happen. I've gotta go out there and battle through six or seven innings, no matter if I have good stuff or not. "I fell behind way too many guys and wasn't able to put guys away when I was ahead of them. Let them back into too many hitters counts and they were comfortable in the box. "I didn't set the tone and made it tough for the relievers coming in. It's just not acceptable." Arrieta was in trouble almost from the start Sunday. He gave up a third-inning Grand Slam to Jason Kubel and allowed five runs in four innings on the day. "There were flashes in there where I'd pitch a guy really well, get him 0-2, 1-2 and let them back in the count. I had the oppurtunity to get out of the inning unscathed in the third, got two big outs. And, then I just couldn't seal the deal. Couldn't execute a pitch to get Kubel out and they made me pay for it. "I was yanking fastballs out of the zone. When you fall behind 2-0 the hitter is pretty comfortable in there." Is there too much pressure on the young pitchers with each seemingly struggling right now? "That's my job. The way things are going now, the starters have to go out there and give the team a quality outing. Just gotta battle and prepare, which I will for the next one and do a better job. "Overall the starters have to do a better job of setting the tone and today was a poor example of that. There are just no excuses. You have to go out there and execute the game plan. Just didn't execute at all. It's just upsetting. "This is going to bother me pretty bad, just because of how well I prepare. You know, it's unfortunate, I really won't accept outings like this. I'm going to make a change, no question about it." This was the second time in nine O's starts that Arrieta failed to pitch into the fifth inning. He has allowed 10 ER over 9 1/3 over his last two starts and is 3-3, 5.40 on the season.
