Machado: "We collapsed and they took advantage of it" (Hunter Harvey to have MRI)

In the quiet of the Orioles clubhouse, Manny Machado talked about the latest loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Tonight's 10-2 defeat was marked by three errors, a passed ball and four unearned runs.

"That wasn't us. That wasn't us," Machado said. "Then it kept rolling. That was an inning where we lost the game. We collapsed and they took advantage of it. We have to keep our head up high and come out tomorrow.

"They are swinging the bat well and we are not. They are hitting in key situations. We are just making too many errors. Plain and simple, we are making way too many errors. Dumb mistakes we should not be doing. Not like us. They took advantage of it completely. That is what we do to other teams. We just have to play better defense."

Machado was asked if he could explain the team's poor play and myriad of defensive miscues.

"Better now than later," he said. "It's part of the game. We all make errors. We are just human beings and errors are going to come. As long as we don't make stupid errors, mental errors, it's all good. We just have to keep our head high and keep grinding. Get back out there and help out our pitching staff. We put ourselves in a good situation to get (Chris Tillman) the W and we messed it up right behind him. It is all on us."

Machado was asked about his own errors. He made one tonight and now has made eight, six of them throwing errors.

"I don't know. Playing baseball. Trying to make outs and it is not turning out how it is supposed to be, so got to keep grinding," he said. "Keep catching grounders and keep making those throws."

Machado said he needed to hit Tillman in the chest with a relay throw where was he charged with an error in the top of the seventh. Tillman could not hang onto the throw covering first base. A double play was not turned and Toronto went on to score four runs to lead 6-2.

Tillman said he should have made the catch on the play.

"You know, it was a close game through the sixth," Tillman said. "If I make that play on that double play, it's a close ballgame and we have a chance to win that. I have to make that play and when I didn't, I have to get the next guy out. We practice that a ton. I went out to get it and it got away from me.

"I have to get that guy out after I missed that throw. Got to get the next guy and pick up the team and I think that is where it got away from us."

Edwin Encarnacion hit two homers for Toronto tonight and it was his second two-homer game against the Orioles on the year.

"He's good," Tillman said. "He always has been. He hit that ball opposite field and only the best can do that. If you make a mistake, he will make you pay. We've had opportunites to pitch better. If we keep our team in the ballgame, we are probably going to win most of the time. But we had a couple get away form us with these guys."

Hunter Harvey will have an MRI: Orioles pitching prospect Hunter Harvey has been shutdown from pitching in extended spring training games due to right elbow tightness. He is expected to have an MRI on the elbow in Baltimore.

Harvey suffered a fractured right shin late in spring training and was pitching in extended spring to build up innings before he could be assigned to an affiliate. But he left a start on Sunday after just two innings. Harvey was shutdown for the final month last year with a flexor mass muscle strain.

The club's first-round pick in 2013, Harvey went 7-5 with an ERA of 3.18 at Single-A Delmarva last year and was expected to begin this season with Single-A Frederick.
