Nats trade Corey Brown to Athletics for cash considerations (updated)

Mike Rizzo and Billy Beane are at it again. The Nationals have traded outfielder Corey Brown to the Athletics, a source confirmed this afternoon, marking the seventh trade between the two organizations in the last two years and the eighth deal between them in three years. No word yet on what the Nats will receive in return for Brown, who was designated for assignment last week to make room for newly signed outfielder Nate McLouth on the Nationals' 40-man roster. Brown is out of options, so the Nats probably won't be receiving more than a low-level minor leaguer in the deal. Update: The Nats announced that they will receive cash considerations in exchange for Brown. Straight cash, homie. The trade sends Brown back to the Athletics organization, where he played the first four years of his professional career before being dealt to the Nationals in 2010 in exchange for Josh Willingham. Reliever Henry Rodriguez, who the Nats designated for assignment and then traded to the Cubs in June, also came to D.C. in the Willingham trade. Brown was a first-round pick of the A's in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. Brown hit .167/.333/.500 with two home runs and four RBIs in limited playing time with the Nationals. He made his big league debut with the team in 2011 and got just 40 major league at-bats over the last three years, despite having success at the Triple-A level. The 28-year-old outfielder hit .285 with 25 homers for Triple-A Syracuse back in 2012, but battled injury this season and saw his slash line dip to .254/.326/.473 in 107 games. Brown became expendable with the signing of McLouth, who will serve as the Nationals' fourth outfielder and a left-handed bat off the bench. So, to recap, Brown has now been traded between the A's and Nats twice, as has Kurt Suzuki and pitching prospect A.J. Cole. Other deals between the two teams include the Nats acquiring Gio Gonzalez from Oakland in December 2011; the Nats getting Cole, Ian Krol and Blake Treinen from the A's in the three-team deal that shipped Michael Morse to Seattle last offseason; and the recent trades that sent southpaw Fernando Abad to Oakland for minor league outfielder John Wooten, and left-hander Jerry Blevins to D.C. for minor league outfielder Billy Burns.
